Chapter 123: The Symphony of Destruction
The Abyssal swarm surged upward from the burning continent.
Millions of Abyssal Gargoyles and Void-Rays formed a colossal spiraling tornado of black chitin, leathery wings, and sickly green necrotic fire.
They shrieked with a deafening unified hunger. Their empty glowing purple eyes were locked entirely on the floating city of Zephyria.
Lucifer stood on the high balcony of the central keep. He did not issue a frantic order to brace for impact. The Warlord’s void-swirling eyes analyzed the incoming horde with cold mathematical precision.
[System Warning: Massive Hostile Swarm Engaging.]
[Entities: Abyssal Gargoyles (Level 60), Void-Rays (Level 65).]
[Estimated Quantity: 15,000,000+]
"They outnumber our garrison," Lyra noted softly. The Twilight Seraph stood beside Lucifer with her six wings of holy and void energy shifting gracefully.
Her dual-toned eyes tracked the leading edge of the swarm. "If they breach the perimeter, the mortal troops will be overrun."
"They won’t breach the perimeter," Lucifer stated smoothly.
He did not draw his sword. He tapped his comms rune and opened a direct channel to his entire command structure.
"Celeste," Lucifer ordered.
"Vanguard is holding, Grand Marshal," the High Ranger replied instantly. She was stationed on the lowest outer ring of the city.
She oversaw the thirteen million mortal soldiers who were manning the inner barricades. "The Star-Kissed Elves are on the walls, weapons hot."
"Hold fire," Lucifer commanded. "Let the automated grid take the vanguard."
He switched the channel.
"Vexia. Thrain," Lucifer called down to the subterranean levels.
Deep inside the Aether-Forge, the dwarf king and the Sanguine Princess were standing over the master control console.
"The Void-Core Reactor is humming at optimal capacity, Warlord!" Thrain roared over the static.
"The blood wards are primed," Vexia added and her voice dripped with predatory excitement. "I can feel the hostiles approaching the boundary. The grid is hungry."
"Engage absolute defense," Lucifer ordered. "Fire the Pylons."
The command was executed flawlessly.
The ten thousand Cryo-Pylons ringing the outer edge of Zephyria had been glowing with a faint steady blue light.
The moment the order hit the grid, the massive crystal orbs atop each spire flared to blinding violent intensity.
The defense grid did not just project a passive shield. It attacked!
A deafening synchronized hum vibrated through the bedrock of the floating city.
Ten thousand massive concentrated beams of absolute zero magic erupted from the Cryo-Pylons
The blinding azure lasers shot outward and formed a perfect impenetrable horizontal ring of cryogenic artillery fire.
The leading edge of the Abyssal swarm hit the blue light.
It was a massacre of unprecedented scale, the Level 60 Abyssal Gargoyles were fast, but they were not immune to multiplied absolute zero magic.
The moment they touched the azure beams, their thick black chitin and necrotic flesh froze instantly.
Millions of monsters turned into solid brittle ice in mid-air!
The kinetic momentum of their charge carried them forward and caused them to slam into each other.
The frozen Gargoyles shattered like glass. They exploded into massive clouds of fine blue-black ice dust that rained down harmlessly into the empty sky below the city.
The Void-Rays were massive flying manta-rays that acted as heavy bombers for the Abyss. They attempted to bank upward and unleash their green hellfire from above the Cryo-Pylon ring.
They did not get the chance!
"Titans, Anti-Air Protocols," Lucifer ordered smoothly over the comms.
Standing in the main courtyard, the thousand twenty-meter-tall Paladin-Mechs raised their massive glowing golden arms.
They did not aim horizontally. They pointed their heavy aether-cannons straight up into the dark sky!
One thousand blinding beams of pure white-hot holy sunlight ripped upward and intersected with the descending Void-Rays.
The Abyssal bombers were vaporized instantly, the holy light tore through their thick dark matter hides and triggered violent internal detonations that blew the massive beasts apart before they could even open their maws to fire.
"The grid is flawless," Elara breathed and watched the synchronized destruction from the balcony. "You have built a perfect killing machine."
"It’s mathematically sound," Lucifer agreed coldly.
The Carnage Core on his hip pulsed violently. It gorgeously absorbed the massive ambient death energy of millions of high-tier monsters being eradicated outside the city walls.
But the Abyss was not a finite army. It was an endless churning ocean of destruction.
For every million Gargoyles the Cryo-Pylons shattered, two million more poured out of the massive purple-rimmed eye in the sky. The sheer physical mass of the swarm was staggering!
The monsters began to aggressively dive-bomb the absolute zero beams. They sacrificed their bodies to create temporary gaps in the grid for the others to slip through.
A few thousand Gargoyles managed to breach the blue light.
They shrieked and dived toward the Star-Kissed Elves manning the black-stone battlements.
The Elves did not flinch.
Eight thousand heavy magitech sniper rifles fired simultaneously. The armor-piercing ice rounds were empowered by the Warlord’s True Damage buff.
They tore the breaching Gargoyles into shreds before they even reached the parapets!
But the sheer volume of the swarm was beginning to tell.
The sky grew dark with falling ice, shattered chitin, and thick green blood. The constant overlapping firing of the Cryo-Pylons and the Paladin-Mechs was draining the city’s power reserves faster than the Void-Core Reactor could process ambient mana.
[System Alert: Defensive Grid Integrity Fluctuating.]
[Void-Core Reactor output at 110%. Thermal overload imminent.]
[Cryo-Pylon recharge rate dropping.]
Lucifer frowned slightly. His void-swirling eyes locked onto the massive interface projected over the balcony.
"Thrain," Lucifer barked over the comms. "The cannons are slowing down. The reactor is bottlenecking."
"I can’t push it any harder, Warlord!" the dwarf king yelled back and his voice strained over the roaring engines.
"The Void-Core is infinite, but the physical conduits carrying the mana to the outer walls are overheating.
The Star-Metal is turning white, if I push more juice through the lines, the pipes will melt, and the Pylons will go dark!"
If the Pylons went dark, the swarm would instantly crush the city under billions of tons of monstrous flesh.
"Vexia," Lucifer commanded sharply. "The Sanguine Grid. Override the physical conduits."
Deep in the Aether-Forge, the Sanguine Princess hovered over the control console. Her red eyes burned with manic intensity.
"The blood lines are already saturated, Grand Marshal," Vexia reported rapidly. "The grid is draining the life-force from the monsters hitting the perimeter, but the input is too chaotic.
The blood magic is clashing with the pure aether-energy in the pipes. I need a localized buffer to smooth the transfer, or the entire network will burst!"
"I am the buffer," Lucifer stated smoothly.
He did not activate Zephyr’s Grace. He did not use Void Step.
Lucifer placed his bare left hand flat against the black-stone floor of the balcony. He closed his eyes.
He channeled his entire Level 50 Void Monarch core directly into the architecture of Zephyria.
"System," Lucifer whispered. "Target: Sanguine Grid and Void-Core Conduits. Establish Archmage Synchronization."
[Target Locked: Zephyria Internal Infrastructure.]
[Initiating Manual Mana Override.]
Lucifer became the living circuit breaker for the floating city!
He used his massive infinitely dense Void Arcanist mana pool to physically separate the conflicting magical energies coursing through the bedrock.
He forced the raw chaotic blood magic harvested from the dead Gargoyles into the Sanguine veins. Simultaneously, he smoothed the flow of pure blue aether-energy through the Star-Metal pipes.
The physical toll was immense. The Warlord gritted his teeth and the veins on his neck bulged as the sheer volume of planetary-scale magic rushed through his chest!
"The lines are clear!" Thrain roared joyously over the comms. "The heat is dropping! The conduits are stable!"
"I am flooding the grid!" Vexia shrieked and her voice was high and triumphant. "The blood wards are at maximum capacity! Pushing all harvested vitality directly to the Cryo-Pylons!"
On the perimeter, the faltering blue light of the ten thousand defense towers suddenly spiked!
The Cryo-Pylons did not just resume their steady firing. The massive influx of refined blood magic perfectly synchronized by Lucifer’s core mutated the defense grid.
The blinding azure lasers turned a deep violent icy crimson!
[System Update: Defensive Grid Evolved.]
[New Artifact Status: Sanguine-Cryo Artillery.]
[Effect: Absolute Zero pulses now inflict Hemorrhaging. Targets are frozen and violently drained of all vitality simultaneously.]
The new crimson-blue beams ripped into the endless Abyssal swarm.
The destruction was absolute.
The Gargoyles did not just freeze and shatter, they imploded. The Sanguine magic forcibly extracted every drop of blood from their bodies the exact microsecond they froze and instantly fed the vitality back into Zephyria’s grid.
It was a perfectly closed self-sustaining loop of endless slaughter. The more monsters the Abyss threw at the city, the stronger the city’s shields became!
Lucifer stood up from the floor and wiped a single drop of sweat from his brow. His breathing was steady. He had manually stabilized a failing planetary defense grid with raw force of will.
"The perimeter is secure," Lucifer announced to his commanders. He rolled his armored shoulders. "They cannot breach the red ice."
Lyra stared out at the continuous flawless massacre happening miles away. The sky was filled with red and blue light tearing through the black swarm.
"It is a symphony," Lyra whispered and her dual-toned eyes were wide with awe. "A perfectly orchestrated symphony of destruction."
"It is logistics," Lucifer corrected her smoothly.
Before he could elaborate, the massive purple-rimmed eye dominating the sky above them pulsed violently.
The endless stream of low-level Gargoyles and Void-Rays abruptly stopped.
The colossal Abyssal tear in the atmosphere widened. A deep heavy terrifying silence fell over the sky and was broken only by the hum of the city’s engines.
"The swarm is pulling back," Elara noted and stepped to the edge of the balcony. She gripped her violet-flaming spear tighter. "They realize the small units cannot break the grid."
"They are sending a ram," Lucifer said. His void-swirling eyes locked onto the center of the massive dimensional rift.
A colossal shape began to slowly push its way out of the pitch-black void.
It was not a swarm. It was a single entity!
It was an Abyssal Leviathan. But this was not the slithering eel-like beast Lucifer had killed in the Umbral Plane. This was a fully corrupted armored monstrosity the size of a human city.
It looked like a massive rotting whale covered in thick plates of jagged black obsidian and sickly green runes.
Thousands of long barbed tentacles trailed behind it and dripped with highly corrosive acid that hissed in the high-altitude air.
[System Warning: Epic Siege Boss Detected!]
[Entity: Abyssal Leviathan (Level 70 - Void Dreadnought)]
[Status: Engaging Target: Zephyria.]
The Leviathan did not roar. It did not cast a spell.
It tucked its massive fins and began a slow unstoppable terrifying dive directly toward the floating mountain, Its sheer physical mass was staggering.
If a creature that size collided with Zephyria’s shields, the kinetic impact would shatter the Cryo-Pylons and crack the bedrock of the city regardless of the Sanguine Grid’s stability.
"The Pylons won’t stop that," Sarah warned and her voice was tight with alarm. "It is too dense. The crimson ice will only scratch the outer plating before it rams us."
"The Pylons are for the swarm," Lucifer stated coldly.
He did not look worried. He drew the Blade of Ruin. The sentient ruby-red artifact flared and was hungry for the high-tier death energy approaching from the sky.
