Chapter 301: The terms
[Jake's POV]
I turned back to the Empress. The broken door behind me was still letting in cold air from the hallway. Two guards were dragging their unconscious partners out. No one was looking at me directly anymore. That was good.
I rested my hands on the edge of the oak desk. Close enough to talk. Far enough that she couldn't claim I was threatening her.
"The terms are simple," I said. "The Golden Koi is no longer a subordinate syndicate. We do not pay tribute to the Imperial Mountain. We do not ask for permission to operate in the lower districts. We are an independent, sovereign entity."
Song Mei's eyes narrowed. The word _sovereign_ hit her like a slap. "You demand equality."
"I demand autonomy," I corrected. "You keep the mountain, the high-society casinos, and the political infrastructure. The judges, the gaming commission, the developers. All of it. We keep the Outer Harbour, the commercial docks, and the street-level logistics. The factories, the markets, the vendors. We don't interfere with your operations, and you don't interfere with ours."
She leaned back in her chair. The leather creaked. "And if our interests overlap?"
"Then we talk first," I said. "Like adults. Not like a queen demanding kneeling. The cold war ends tonight. We draw a line down the middle of the city and both sides respect it."
"And the two hundred million dollars?" she asked. Her voice was careful now.
"Remains in the Trust," I said. "Julian Croft remains your silent partner. The Golden Koi will continue to funnel clean capital into your developments through the Jade Palace, and we will take our twenty percent yield on the back end. You get liquidity. You get to finish Cotai. You get to keep your politicians happy. We get a seat at the table without bowing."
It was a bitter pill for her to swallow. She was being forced to accept a street syndicate as a legitimate business partner. But the alternative was total financial ruin by sunrise.
"You have built a very sturdy cage for me, Mr. Reed," Song Mei murmured, looking down at the polished surface of her desk. Her fingers traced the grain of the wood. "But cages have doors. And eventually, someone leaves them unlocked."
"Then I suggest you don't go around looking for the key because I can assure you that you will not find it," I replied.
I stood up straight, buttoning my suit jacket. The move was deliberate. End of conversation. End of negotiation.
I looked at Li and offered a faint nod.
Li stepped away from the wall. The regal authority was back in her posture. The Matriarch. Not the girl who had been terrified ten minutes ago. She didn't gloat. She didn't offer any parting threats. She simply walked past the Empress, her head held high, her red gown whispering against the floor, and stepped out into the corridor.
I followed her. But I kept my eyes on the Imperial Shadow in the corner until I crossed the threshold. The woman didn't move. Her hand was still near her karambit. Waiting for a command that didn't come.
The four guards in the hallway parted silently to let us pass. None of them met my eyes.
We walked back down the dimly lit corridor. Our footsteps were the only sound. Past the empty Great Hall where the politicians and developers were pretending not to watch us leave. Past the lantern-lit courtyards. Out into the cool night air of the Imperial Mountain.
"Overwatch, we're clear," I murmured as we passed through the stone archway and the jamming field dropped. My earpiece crackled to life.
"Thank God," Claire's voice came through, heavy with relief. "Ethan, they're out. Stand down."
"Copy that," Ethan replied. I could hear him packing up his rifle in the background. "I'm off the ridge. See you at the safehouse."
We reached the armored Maybach waiting at the base of the mountain. The driver opened the door, and we slid into the backseat. The heavy doors locked with a solid thunk, sealing us in the quiet, soundproofed interior.
For a full minute neither of us spoke. The car began the descent back toward the city. The lights of Macau spread out below us like a circuit board.
Then Li turned to me. She didn't speak. She simply reached out, grabbed the lapels of my jacket, and pulled me into a fierce, desperate kiss. It was a collision of adrenaline, relief, and absolute devotion. Five years of fighting. One night of risking everything.
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her across the leather seat and onto my lap. She buried her face in the crook of my neck. Her body was trembling slightly as the reality of what we had just survived finally caught up with her.
"You broke her," Li whispered against my skin. Her voice was shaking. "You walked into the Imperial Mountain and you broke the Empress."
"I secured our borders," I murmured, my hand gently stroking her hair. "The Golden Koi is safe, Li. The lower districts are yours."
The mechanical hum vibrated at the base of my skull. Deep. Resonant. The System.
[Ding! Strategic Objective Complete: The Sovereign's Autonomy.]

Li pulled back just enough to look at me. Her eyes were wet but she wasn't crying. "What happens now?"
"Now we build," I said. "She licks her wounds. We expand. We harden. And we wait for her next move."
"She will make one," Li said.
"She has to," I replied. "Predators don't stay in cages. But this time we choose the ground we fight on."
The Maybach turned off the mountain road and onto the main highway. The city was ours.
