"First task done," Dexter huffed, putting a goblin corpse into the garbage collector. "Three caps mean three meals. Other than the weekly wages we get as enforcers."
Dexter looked at the garbage collector, clutching three caps in his fists. Well, it used to be a garbage collector once. But Aiden had it repurposed for disposing intact corpses.
Anyone could drop a corpse there and, in exchange, would receive an appropriate amount of caps.
However, there was a catch.
The number of caps any dispenser held was limited. And people could gain rewards from not only dropping corpses but also doing other menial tasks listed in their ’daily quest’ tab.
"Let’s see what other tasks can I complete today..." Dexter mumbled, looking at the task sheet displayed next to the cap dispenser.
Anyone with the tenant system could check and claim a task. There were all kinds of tasks, ranging from cleaning the floors to hunting monsters. People could even claim maintenance tasks.
However, not everyone could take on any task just for the sake of hoarding them. Depending on their rank and living floor, the tasks they could take were limited.
Dexter and other enforcers like him could take up to five tasks a day. Those living on the first five floors could only get three, and people from floors six to ten could take four tasks.
Not to mention, out of the hundred tasks, only those relevant to one’s ’job’ would be shown to them. As such, a cleaner couldn’t take a security guard’s job and vice versa.
The categorization ensured everyone got an equal opportunity to make a living. In return, it also increased everyone’s loyalty and trust towards their benevolent landlord.
As for the wolves, they had no restrictions when it came to tasks. But Marcus, Glenn, and Damian ensured they only took the most important tasks, just like hunting hobgoblins.
Naturally, their rewards were much better than those of the other tenants. They even had a special coupon in their shop that they could use to personally ask Aiden for a special reward. It went without saying that most of them were grinding to get that coupon.
There was also a promotion system for ordinary tenants to become enforcers and the enforcers to join the wolves, and so on.
Naturally, it wasn’t all done with points. They had to apply for a promotion, and then the enforcers or the wolves would test them. Only if they perform satisfactorily would they be allowed to join the groups.
As for special jobs involving utility facilities, they had individual tasks issued to them directly via the pseudo system.
For James, it was to create new items or blueprints daily, and Lily only had one task for all eternity: Being happy.
For Amaela, it was to convert corpses in the basement during the day and then cultivate a ’bloody farm’ during the night. Though the farm thing had been put on hold by Aiden for now, as he needed a lot of ghouls before Milarel lured Joan to him.
For the doctors, it was to heal injuries or cure illnesses. It was the same for the nurses. As for the gym trainers, they had to help some people boost their stats.
In short, everyone had a task related to their job.
"Hm... Should I go for another hunt?" Dexter mumbled, scratching his chin. "No, one goblin is enough for today."
He was so lost in thought that he didn’t notice the vending machine next to him whirl into life. The group of three rough-looking enforcers appeared next to it, enjoying their food.
"Completing quests, boss?" Dwayne, the tank who had helped Dexter during the enforcer trial, asked while leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, gotta complete the dailies," Dexter replied with a shrug.
"That’s what we all gotta do. Map, I know it’s not the case, but this... kind of feels like a game, doesn’t it?"
The two guys with Dwayne immediately nodded. Everyone had thought the same thing at one time or the other in their time since the apocalypse began.
However, it seemed to be the case now more than ever.
Why?
Because everyone now had a ’game system’. They had to complete daily tasks to get money and rewards. They also lived in a ’safe zone’ impervious to monster attacks. They even had classes and jobs. Not to mention, stats that they could increase as they worked.
So naturally, it felt like a game to them.
"You can think about it like that," Dexter smiled, picking up an exploration task. "But don’t forget, there are no respawns here if you die."
With that playful jab, Dexter was about to go and form a team for the task, but was stopped by Dwayne’s comment.
"How do you know that?"
"What?"
"How do you know there are no respawns?"
Dexter looked at him, his eyebrows raised. He couldn’t contemplate whether Dwayne was serious or messing around. In the end, he waved it off as a poor joke and went on his way.
Dwayne didn’t stop him either. The group ate their fill and picked a task before going their merry way.
"Someone who can manage all this without a thought could certainly resurrect people..." Dwayne mumbled, clutching his locket. "Come on. Let’s get some contribution points."
Thanks to his reputation, it wasn’t difficult for Dexter to find people to team up with. However, the next second, his exploration quest was changed into something else.
"Report to the landlord?" Dexter frowned, taken aback by the sudden summon.
Normally, anyone would rejoice at such an opportunity, but Dexter was scared shitless. After all, he remembered Aiden’s warning loud and clear.
If any enforcer caused a problem, he would be the one to get punished. Being the pessimistic asshole that he was, Dexter immediately thought he was about to get punished.
"...you guys wait here or take up another quest," he mumbled, entering the elevator. "I have something else to do."
