Chapter 14 : Chapter 14
Chapter 14: Magical Beast Crystal Core
In the midst of battle, Knight Kline and the others had only just dealt with that Magical Beast when, before they could even breathe a sigh of relief, they saw four more enormous Magical Beasts charging straight at them.
Those four Magical Beasts were even larger than the one from before, though they looked quite similar.
Their roar-like howls echoed through the Dusk Forest.
Their dim blue, icy eyes were fixed firmly on Knight Kline and the others.
It was as though they were declaring their territory.
Knight Kline’s expression changed drastically at once, and he frantically retreated several steps.
“Damn it! These Dusk Magic Wolves are pack beasts. We need to retreat now!”
Before he had even finished speaking, Sotor, who was standing nearby, gritted his teeth and was just about to turn around when he suddenly saw four or five more massive figures charging toward them from the distance.
“There is no escaping now! Damn it, we need a mage!!”
Without Mage Orr, the disadvantage of their situation immediately became obvious. If there had been a mage in their party, then at the very least they would have had magical perception and would never have fallen into danger like this.
“We fight!”
Knight Kline’s expression turned grave as he suddenly clenched his teeth. He could not die here. Absolutely not!
The next moment, while those Dusk Magic Wolves were still staring at them menacingly, Knight Kline swung the Knight’s Sword in his hand, and even the knight armor over his chest began to radiate a hazy light.
Mana Defense, Mana Weakening, and Knight’s Power were all fully activated at that moment.
With a low roar, he charged toward one of the Dusk Magic Wolves.
Seeing that he was already going all out, the remaining three also released a trace of blood qi.
The exposed skin on their bodies swelled with a flushed redness, while the effects of Bloodthirst and Berserk rose sharply.
Sotor in particular swung his greatsword and smashed it fiercely toward the nearest Dusk Magic Wolf!
Under the effects of Bloodthirsty Berserk, he was able to wield the greatsword far more easily.
The greatsword instantly smashed into that wolf’s head, caving its skull in on the spot. Its scream was shrill and piercing.
The wolf was slammed into the ground by that single strike and never moved again.
A heavy smell of blood filled the center of the battlefield.
It made the three warriors, already in a berserk state, even more frenzied.
At the same time, Knight Kline had already engaged the huge wolf king.
The instant he rushed forward, several dim blue mana projectiles condensed in the wolf’s mouth.
They shot straight toward Knight Kline.
Ordinarily, only Second-Tier Magical Beasts could use mana projectiles like these.
But when those mana projectiles struck Knight Kline’s body, the Mana Weakening runes on his armor flashed instantly, actually blocking their attack.
The next moment, Knight Kline raised his Knight’s Sword high with both hands, and the hazy radiance around it flared brilliantly!
As the strongest attack of a First-Tier Knight, Knight’s Slash burst forth with its greatest power.
It slashed toward the wolf king’s head, but the beast feinted and dodged, causing Knight Kline’s strike to miss completely. The blow landed on the ground instead, blasting out a crater as wet earth flew in all directions.
The wolf then fired several more dim blue mana projectiles at Knight Kline in succession.
From a distance, Jiang Lin took in the entire battle.
Compared to the berserk attack methods of the three warriors, it was Knight Kline’s fighting style that surprised him more.
The knights of this world were indeed quite sturdy.
What especially caught Jiang Lin’s attention was the obvious weakening effect when those mana projectiles struck the knight armor.
That armor probably carried some degree of mana suppression.
He simply watched from where he stood, in no hurry at all. He wanted to see whether these people still had any hidden cards left to reveal.
As he continued watching, several more wolves entered the range of his divine sense. Jiang Lin froze for a moment and realized that, by sheer coincidence, one of them was charging straight toward him.
“It noticed me?”
Jiang Lin murmured. Without haste, he raised a hand and formed a sword seal.
The Cangwu Sword suddenly shot out, its sword light glinting with icy sharpness as it turned into a fierce streak of light and instantly flew toward that wolf.
In the next moment, that sharp streak flashed between the shadows of the trees and, in the plainest and simplest manner imaginable, pierced straight through the unlucky wolf’s head. It did not even manage a whimper before collapsing to the ground.
Even in death, that wolf never knew who had killed it.
Jiang Lin curled his sword fingers slightly, and in the distance, the streak of light flashed once more as the Cangwu Sword flew back into his hand.
If he could kill it in a single strike, then he had no desire to waste even the slightest bit more Spiritual Power.
When it came to controlling Spiritual Power, especially with a sword, Jiang Lin’s precision could be called absolute.
Still, some habits could not be changed in so short a time.
For example, recalling the Cangwu Sword also required Spiritual Power.
Turning to look at the group still engaged in fierce battle, Jiang Lin saw that they would not be finishing anytime soon, so he walked toward the wolf he had just killed with his flying sword.
Looking at the corpse before him, he saw that even while lying down, the wolf still stood over a meter tall.
What covered the wolf’s body was not fur, but a layer of black scales.
It had a certain level of defensive ability, but to Jiang Lin, it amounted to nothing.
After thinking for a moment, Jiang Lin used his sword to cut open the wolf’s body, wanting to see whether it had something like a demon core inside.
Although those scales could also be used to refine magical artifacts, Jiang Lin felt there was no need for that. If it could be pierced through by his sword in a single strike, then how useful could it really be?
It was absolutely not because he did not know how to do it.
After searching for quite a while, he still found nothing like a demon core, even after the wolf had practically been dismembered.
Jiang Lin frowned.
“That should not be the case...”
Since he had not found anything useful, Jiang Lin shook his head regretfully and returned to the distant battlefield.
Once his gaze fell upon it again, he was somewhat surprised.
At that point, there was only one wolf left, the huge wolf king, still struggling to hold on.
The four of them clearly had at least some degree of coordination.
Knight Kline was holding off the wolf king’s attacks at the front, while among the three warriors, one archer was lying in wait for an opening.
The other two were attacking without restraint.
Clearly, these people did have some real skill, though not all that much.
After watching for a while longer, it finally happened. With a furious roar from Knight Kline, the Knight’s Sword ultimately pierced through the wolf king’s heart.
And with that, the battle came to an end.
After considering it, Jiang Lin chose not to make a move. He had already gauged their strength, so there was even less reason to act in haste now. He was still counting on them to draw attention ahead of him.
When Spiritual Power was scarce, whatever could be saved had to be saved.
This was probably the poorest period of his life, to the point that even his Spiritual Power had to be budgeted carefully...
After killing the wolf king, the group in the distance did not linger at all, nor did they even stop to treat their wounds. But that was actually a smart decision.
After all, the disturbance they had caused, along with the smell of blood, would very likely attract other Magical Beasts.
So leaving as quickly as possible was the right choice.
Jiang Lin leisurely followed behind them.
When he passed through the battlefield, he still refused to give up and continued cutting open the corpses of those wolves.
At last, inside the wolf king’s head, he found an irregular diamond-shaped crystal about the size of a pigeon’s egg.
There was still quite a bit of mana stored inside it. Jiang Lin examined it with his senses and found that he could absorb this mana, though it was impure and would need to be refined first.
“It looks like these Magical Beasts do possess the ability to use magic, but perhaps only after reaching a certain level.”
He had seen that mana projectile used by the wolf king quite clearly just now, so there was no reason it would not have some object for storing mana.
Unless, of course, these Magical Beasts also knew how to construct mana circuits.
So Jiang Lin had only guessed one thing wrong: only Magical Beasts above the second tier possessed this kind of crystal core.
This counted as an unexpected gain. Jiang Lin’s mood brightened, and he continued following after them.
If necessary, he could also hunt these Magical Beasts to obtain Spiritual Power.
However, using it was still rather troublesome. The Spiritual Energy contained within was not pure either.
Refining it would also require a certain amount of Spiritual Power.
So unless it became necessary, it was better to keep them in reserve for now.
