Worldwide Class Change: Minimal Effort, Maximum Reward!

Chapter 294: The Proving Ground Again

He found the door on the second cycle after leaving the high-density region.

The Middle Domain’s landscape between the threshold boundary and the door’s location was territory he had covered before, the formations and their self-luminous quality familiar in the way of ground that had been walked twice, the second walking carrying the accumulated context of everything between the first walking and the return.

The door was the same.

Law-matter composition, rectangular, standing alone in the sparse zone the proving ground had cleared around itself for the same reason significant things cleared space around themselves in this realm, the organizing principle of the structure requiring room to operate in rather than compression from neighboring content.

He stopped in front of it.

He thought about what the measurement would tell him and what it would not tell him.

The gap between developed depth and Kǎn’s several-stages-above would have narrowed by one stage, developed to established being a single crossing. Kǎn was still above him. The measurement would tell him how the output differential had changed, whether the Final Cut’s strain on Kǎn had become anything more than a flicker and a half-second of effort, whether established depth’s substantial penetration property had changed the quality of contact in a way the proving ground’s honest engagement would make visible.

It would not tell him the total remaining distance. Kǎn’s actual depth was still above the Observer’s calibration range, though the calibration update from established depth had extended the range. He would know more precisely than before. He would not know everything.

Both pieces of information were useful.

He stepped through the door.

The proving ground’s interior was exactly as he had left it, the circular arena with its boundary shimmer, the flat Law-matter floor unmarked, the ambient quality of a space built for one specific purpose and organized around that purpose without remainder.

Kǎn was there.

Seated at the arena’s far side, the easy cross-legged position of someone who spent significant time here, and he looked up when Lin Yi entered with the attentive quality of the contest Law processing the arrival.

"You came back," Kǎn said.

"You said the door would let me return when the depth had changed," Lin Yi said.

"It did." Kǎn rose from the seated position with the fluid economy of someone whose physical movement expressed their Law’s precision rather than requiring separate attention. "The door would not have opened for you if the depth had not changed. It reads what you carry at the entry point." He looked at Lin Yi with the full assessment of the contest Law at his depth. "Established," he said.

"Yes," Lin Yi said.

"From developed in a single visit to the high-density region," Kǎn said. Not a question. A statement of something the contest Law was reading from the framework’s current condition.

"Seven engagements," Lin Yi said.

Kǎn was quiet for a moment. "Seven is more than most manage before the accumulated expenditure forces rest," he said. "The Momentum function was running at high accumulation by the end."

"Yes," Lin Yi said.

"That function is well-suited to this kind of sustained engagement sequence," Kǎn said. "The contest Law observes different techniques express themselves differently across populations of engagements. The Slaughter Sovereign’s Momentum function is among the most efficient at converting engagement sequences into contribution accumulation I have encountered."

Lin Yi absorbed this as the useful data it was rather than as the compliment it might have been in a different framework.

"Are you ready to measure?" Kǎn said.

"Yes," Lin Yi said.

He drew the Thunder Surge Blade.

Kǎn did not draw anything. He stood in the arena with the contest Law present through him at its depth and inclined his head at the same slight angle he had used the first time, the measurement’s beginning acknowledged rather than announced.

Lin Yi moved.

The opening was different from the first visit in the specific way that established depth was different from developed, the Slaughter Sovereign’s identification function providing a more complete picture of the engagement space before the first contact than it had provided last time, the Observer’s calibration update letting him read Kǎn’s structural information at a resolution the previous visit had not achieved.

Not complete resolution. The calibration update had extended his range to established-equivalent depth and partial range above it. Kǎn was above the partial range above established. He could read more than before. He could not read everything.

What he could read was enough to adjust his initial approach.

The first visit he had used Resonant Strike as the opening technique, the default expression of the Law against a target he could not fully read. This time he used Void Severance, the spatial penetration component aimed at the structural layer the Observer’s partial resolution could now identify as distinct from Kǎn’s surface expression.

Kǎn received it.

Not with the complete absorption of last time.

The contact produced a response in Kǎn’s expression that was different from the flicker the Final Cut had produced previously, less dramatic but more immediate, the spatial penetration’s substantial penetration property at established depth reaching something that developed depth’s significant property had not reached.

"Better," Kǎn said, his voice carrying the specific quality of the contest Law registering accurate measurement.

Lin Yi pressed.

The engagement ran through six exchanges before Kǎn applied a counter that ended the sequence, and in those six exchanges the picture was clearer than anything the first visit had produced. The gap was real but it had changed. The Final Cut in the seventh exchange produced not a flicker and a half-second of effort but a visible and sustained response, the strain lasting multiple seconds, Kǎn’s contest Law actively managing the incoming force rather than simply receiving it.

He had moved the needle.

The gap between established depth and wherever Kǎn operated was smaller than the gap between developed depth and wherever Kǎn operated had been.

The Inevitable talent noted this without producing a notification. He felt it the way he felt the talent’s presence as background certainty, the Heavenly Dao’s framework registering the movement toward the committed obstacle.

Kǎn allowed the engagement to conclude naturally after the seventh exchange, the same structure as the first visit, and stepped back to his observation distance.

"You have moved approximately one stage closer," Kǎn said. "The Void Severance at established depth penetrates the first layer of my depth’s expression. At developed depth it did not reach the first layer."

"How many layers?" Lin Yi asked.

"From your current position," Kǎn said, without hesitation, "four."

Four stages above established to match Kǎn’s depth.

He held the number honestly. Four was a real distance and he had learned in the Middle Domain not to diminish real distances by performing optimism about them.

"What comes after established?" he said.

"The stages above it have names in some traditions and no names in others," Kǎn said. "In the contest Law’s framework I describe them by what they require rather than by what they are called. The stage above established requires that the Law not only be settled through the framework but that the framework respond to the Law without requiring the cultivator’s direction. Not unconscious expression. Sovereign expression, the Law operating through the framework with the completeness of something that has become the framework’s primary nature."

Lin Yi thought about Lei Bao’s description from after the seventh engagement. Complete expression. The Law expressing through everything available without any element being held back or underused.

"I felt something like that in the seventh engagement," he said.

"A glimpse of the stage above," Kǎn said. "The distinction between glimpsing and residing at is significant but the glimpse is useful. It tells you the direction is correct and the development is genuine."

"What produces the full arrival rather than the glimpse?" Lin Yi said.

"More," Kǎn said simply. "More engagements at established depth. More expressions of the Law in real circumstances against genuine obstacles. The stage above established arrives the same way established arrived, through accumulation of genuine engagement at the current level until the accumulation reaches the threshold. The chamber could accelerate foundational to developed. The high-density region accumulated developed to established. The progression above established requires something the Middle Domain provides only in its deeper interior."

Lin Yi looked at him.

"The deeper interior," he said. "Xu Ling told me not to go there yet."

"Xu Ling’s assessment was accurate for developed depth," Kǎn said. "At established depth the deeper interior’s content is appropriate rather than overwhelming. The entities native to that region operate at the stage above established and the stage above that. The gap between established and those stages is smaller than the gap between developed and the high-density region’s content was."

Lin Yi thought about Xu Ling waiting in the standard Middle Domain, her statement that she would be in range when he had read the sword and understood it. He had read the sword. He understood what it said.

He needed to tell her about the deeper interior.

"Thank you," he said to Kǎn.

"The contest Law measures honestly," Kǎn said. "It does not choose what the measurement shows. The honesty belongs to what you have developed, not to me."

Lin Yi sheathed the Thunder Surge Blade.

He walked to the arena’s boundary and stepped through it and back into the Middle Domain’s standard territory and began moving toward wherever Xu Ling’s signature registered in the Observer’s current range.

Four stages to match Kǎn.

One stage above established was the next step.

The deeper interior was the path.

He walked toward Xu Ling to tell her.
