The second entity was different from the first.
He registered the difference through the Observer before the engagement began, the Law-composition reading returning a different organizing principle than the Law of pressure, this one organized around a Law of severance, the premise that things were defined more precisely by what separated them from other things than by any quality they possessed independently.
A Law about edges.
He thought about the Law of Slaughter’s relationship to a Law of severance before the engagement closed the distance, the identification function running the comparison automatically. The Law of slaughter removed obstacles. The Law of severance defined through separation. Both Laws operated at the boundaries between things, one focused on the act of crossing the boundary and one focused on the boundary itself.
The entity arrived at engagement range and he found out immediately that the theoretical correspondence did not translate to a practical similarity in how they fought.
The severance Law entity was precise in a way the pressure entity had not been. Where the pressure entity had applied force broadly and read what that force revealed, the severance entity identified the exact line at which his framework could be separated from its organizing principle and directed its engagement specifically there.
It was attacking the connection between Lin Yi and his Law.
He activated Celestial Armor and Soul Fortress simultaneously, the defensive pairing that addressed both physical and mental interference, and held the framework steady against the severance entity’s directed pressure on the Law-framework connection.
The hold required effort.
The connection between a cultivator and their Law at developed depth was not the same as the connection at foundational depth. At foundational the Law had been present at the center as a named and organized principle. At developed the Law was distributed through the framework, present in every part of it rather than concentrated in one. A severance attack on the connection was therefore an attack on the entire framework simultaneously rather than on a single point, and defending a distributed connection was a different problem from defending a concentrated one.
He adjusted.
The adjustment was the Slaughter Sovereign’s identification function finding the specific angles of the severance entity’s attack and the Observer providing the structural picture of those angles in the complete way it was built for. The angles were not random. The severance Law applied itself methodically, each attempt at separation testing a slightly different edge of the framework’s distributed Law-connection, building a picture of the connection’s topology the way the pressure entity had built a picture of the developed depth’s edges.
Both entities were reading him before they pressed him.
He thought about what that meant for the high-density region’s engagement logic. The entities here were not operating through the simple threat-response of the Lower Domain’s monster populations. They were engaged in something closer to a genuine contest, reading the opponent and responding to what the reading found, the intelligence behind the engagement genuine rather than mechanical.
He responded to the severance entity the same way he had responded to the pressure entity. Not by defending primarily. By attacking.
Void Severance was the natural technique, the spatial energy component that bypassed conventional defense and the naming correspondence with the entity’s Law not coincidental, the Law of Slaughter’s expression through spatial penetration and the Law of severance’s expression through precise boundary definition operating from the same conceptual territory in different directions.
He drove Void Severance at the structural anchor the Observer had identified, the spatial penetration reaching through the entity’s severance field without triggering its separation mechanism because the spatial energy operated in a dimensional layer the severance field was not calibrated for.
The entity registered the contact and adjusted.
The adjustment was fast, faster than the pressure entity had adjusted, the severance Law’s precision applying to the entity’s own defensive recalibration as readily as it applied to its offensive separation attempts.
The engagement was longer than the first.
He used more techniques, the variety of the Slaughter Sovereign’s toolkit becoming relevant in a way it had not been against the pressure entity, each technique tested against the severance field’s response and producing different results depending on which dimensional layer the technique operated through. Energy techniques triggered the field partially. Spatial techniques bypassed it. Physical techniques at the full Strength-scaled output of the Abyssal Thunder Surge Blade produced the most straightforward contact, the severance field’s precision not calibrated for the raw physical output at developed depth.
He used this.
The Thunder Surge Blade’s physical strikes in the Resonant Strike configuration, secondary burst from within the entity’s structure rather than from its surface, Lei Bao’s lightning Sword Qi running alongside and bypassing the energy-layer partial trigger.
The entity withdrew after the seventh exchange.

Two engagements. The cumulative contribution notation told him the system was tracking across engagements rather than evaluating each one independently, the deepening model operating through accumulation in the Middle Domain the way EXP had accumulated in the Lower Domain, the specific threshold he was working toward not displayed but present as the thing the accumulation was building toward.
He moved to the third entity.
This one he found rather than it finding him, the Observer’s reading locating it in a formation cluster forty meters ahead, the entity’s Law-composition organized around something he had not seen before in the Middle Domain. A Law of hunger, the organizing premise that the most fundamental drive of all things was the orientation toward what they lacked, the entity organized around the specific quality of directed want.
A Law of hunger in the high-density region.
He engaged it without analysis of the correspondence, the identification function having provided the structural picture and the Law already orienting toward removal. The hunger entity was aggressive in a way neither of the first two had been, not the methodical reading-then-pressing of the pressure entity or the precise surgical approach of the severance entity but a continuous forward motion, the hunger Law expressing itself as uninterrupted oriented movement toward what it lacked.
What it lacked was the engagement itself.
The entity wanted the contest the way Lei Bao had wanted the Middle Domain, as a genuine long-term ambition, and the wanting was so fundamental to its organizing principle that the engagement was simultaneously what it was fighting for and what it was fighting with, the desire itself the weapon.
He had never encountered a Law that weaponized desire before.
He held his ground against the initial contact and let the Observer complete its picture, the sub-class providing the full structural architecture of how the hunger Law organized the entity’s capacity, and what it returned was useful. The desire was genuine but it was also the entity’s constraint. The hunger was oriented toward one thing at a time, the specific object of the want absorbing the full attention of the organizing principle, which meant that anything which changed what the entity wanted would change the direction of its full output simultaneously.
He activated Phantom Army.
Ten spatial copies distributed across the engagement space, each one registering as a potential engagement target, the hunger entity’s organizing principle finding itself suddenly confronted with multiple objects of potential desire simultaneously, the want orientation fracturing across the options the way a stream fractured into tributaries at a delta.
The entity’s coherence suffered under the fractured orientation.
Into the window the fracture produced, Lin Yi drove the Thunder Surge Blade at the structural anchor the Observer had located during the fractured seconds, the identification function precise and the delivery immediate.
The entity withdrew after two further exchanges.

Substantial.
He looked at the notation and found it informative in the way that progress indicators were informative without revealing the total.
Three engagements. The contribution building from active to building to substantial, the system’s incremental language suggesting he was moving through recognizable stages of accumulation rather than operating in an undifferentiated space.
He was not close yet. The language did not suggest close. But the direction was correct and the engagement quality was appropriate and the Law was expressing through each contest in ways that the system’s own tracking registered as genuine contribution.
He looked at the high-density region ahead.
More entities in the Observer’s range. Different Laws, different engagement styles, different aspects of what the developed depth’s expression needed to be tested against to become something more than developed.
He breathed.
Lei Bao crackled steadily from the blade.
"How do you feel?" the sword spirit asked.
Lin Yi considered the question honestly, the way the deep zone had taught him to consider honest questions.
"Good," he said. "Not in the performed sense. Actually good. This is what the Law does. This is what I am supposed to be doing."
"Yes," Lei Bao said. "I can feel it. The connection between the blade and the Law is different during these engagements than it is during walking or observing. When you are engaged, the expression is complete in a way it isn’t at other times."
Lin Yi looked at the next entity the Observer had flagged.
"Then let’s keep it complete," he said.
He moved toward the fourth engagement.
