Worldwide Class Change: Minimal Effort, Maximum Reward!

Chapter 288: After the Sphere

He walked away from the structure at the same pace he had arrived at it, the day-equivalent light steady around him, the Middle Domain’s landscape resuming its familiar self-luminous character as the structure’s impossible photon-light faded behind him into the general ambient quality of everything else.

Xu Ling walked beside him.

They did not speak immediately. The silence between them was the productive kind, both of them processing what the structure had contained and what the contact had produced, the time required for that processing not artificially shortened by filling it with words that were not yet ready.

He thought about the sphere’s question.

What are you building toward, and does the building know what it is building toward.

He had answered honestly, and the sphere had registered the answer, and nothing visible had changed in his panel or his framework or the distribution of inheritance fragments in the Emperor’s Pouch. He was still at developed depth. The Slaughter Sovereign class still listed the same penetration property. The Inevitable talent still registered the same committed obstacle.

But something had changed in the quality of his orientation.

He had known the tenth note’s request since the night before Xu Ling arrived, and known it more fully after reading the sword’s fourth layer, and now he knew it with the addition of the sphere’s confirmation that the knowing was not passive. The building was aware of what it was building toward. That awareness changed how each step forward sat in the framework, the specific difference between a cultivator moving toward a destination that existed in their understanding as a fact and a cultivator moving toward a destination that existed in their understanding as a felt direction.

Felt direction was harder to deflect.

Kǎn had deflected his techniques easily. He would not be able to deflect the direction.

"The structure will not remain where it is," Xu Ling said eventually.

He looked at her. "It will move?"

"Things from outside the framework do not persist in the Middle Domain the way things native to it persist," she said. "The framework reasserts itself. Whatever enters through its damaged edges is eventually pushed back out or dissolved. The structure is here now because the damage in the Heavenly Dao’s framework created a moment of permeability. That moment will pass."

"How long?" he said.

"I cannot determine precisely. The rate at which the framework reasserts itself at damaged points is not something the sword’s connection gives me access to." She paused. "Long enough that your contact occurred in time. That is the relevant fact."

He looked at the sphere’s question as it sat in his ongoing thinking, the quality of it different now from how it had felt the moment of contact. It had been external then, something presented to him from outside his framework. It was internal now, folded into the developing understanding the same way the chamber’s resonance had folded the Laws’ correspondences into his comprehension of the Law of Slaughter.

The question had become a practice.

What are you building toward, and does the building know.

He thought he would be asking himself that for a long time. Not anxiously. The way a practitioner returned to the fundamental stance of their form at the beginning of each session, not because they had forgotten it but because the returning was itself part of the practice.

"Tell me about the realms above the Middle Domain," he said. "Between here and the Celestial Realm."

Xu Ling was quiet for a moment, organizing what she knew.

"The Emperor’s record distinguishes three tiers above the Middle Domain," she said. "The first is what most cultivators who ascend from the Middle Domain eventually reach, the realm in which Law comprehension has developed to the stage where a cultivator’s Law and the cultivator are no longer separable in any meaningful sense. The Law does not organize the framework at that tier. It is the framework."

"Complete comprehension," he said.

"What the Lower Domain’s system calls complete comprehension is an approximation of what complete comprehension actually is," she said. "The approximation is useful at the stages below it. At the stage itself, the approximation dissolves." She paused. "The second tier above the Middle Domain is where the Heavenly Dao’s direct influence becomes a factor in cultivation rather than a background condition. Cultivators at that tier operate within the Heavenly Dao’s framework in a way that cultivators below it only relate to the framework from outside."

"And the third," he said.

"The Celestial Realm," she said. "The Emperor’s tier. Where the partnership between the cultivator and the Heavenly Dao, in its uncorrupted form, was supposed to operate."

He thought about the three tiers as stages on the path the tenth note pointed toward. Developed depth to complete Law, complete Law to the Heavenly Dao’s direct influence, the Heavenly Dao’s direct influence to the Celestial Realm.

"I am at developed depth," he said. "Three full tiers of the Middle Domain’s development between here and the beginning of what the note asks."

"Yes," she said. "And above the Middle Domain, additional tiers before the Celestial Realm itself." A pause. "It is a long path."

"It was always a long path," he said.

She looked at him.

"Yes," she said. "It was."

They walked through the day-equivalent light, the formations passing on either side, the Observer’s readings providing its background information without demanding foreground attention, the two of them moving through the realm at the pace the realm allowed.

Lei Bao spoke from the blade.

"The proving ground," he said. "Kǎn’s offer of measurement when the depth had changed. You’re thinking about returning."

It was not quite a question. The sword spirit had been reading the framework’s orientation the way he had been reading it since the chamber changed the connection between the blade and the Law.

"Yes," Lin Yi said.

"When?" Xu Ling asked.

"Not immediately," he said. "The depth hasn’t changed since the proving ground. Returning now would produce the same measurement. I need the next stage of development before the measurement is different enough to be worth taking."

"And how do you reach the next stage," she said.

He thought about this honestly. The chamber had provided resonance-based acceleration from foundational to developed. A second chamber would be the ideal path, but the Emperor had built one chamber for this inheritance and he had already used what the chamber could offer at his current entry depth. Returning would produce diminishing returns for the same reason he was not returning to Kǎn yet.

"Genuine engagement," he said. "The Slaughter Sovereign’s class notation says every obstacle removed contributes to the framework’s development. I’ve been acclimating and observing and encountering. I haven’t removed anything significant since the Threshold Sentinels on Tianyuan Star."

Xu Ling looked at him. "The Middle Domain has obstacles appropriate to your depth," she said. "I have been here long enough to identify some of them."

He looked at her.

"Show me," he said.

She turned in a direction she had not been walking and he turned with her and they moved through the Middle Domain’s steady landscape toward whatever she had found in the time she had spent ahead of him, and the Law of Slaughter settled through the framework at developed depth with the specific quality of something that had been in the acclimation and observation and encountering phase long enough and was ready, genuinely ready, for the forward motion that was its native mode.

The obstacles were ahead.

He walked toward them.
