Chapter 423: The Aslan Tribe’s First Strike [Part 2]
Thanks to their general's grand speech, everyone was in high spirits.
There was no doubt in their minds that this time, they would become victorious!
Duran took out the sword from his scabbard and then raised it high in the air.
"All Hail Britannia!"
"""All Hail Britannia!"""
"""All Hail Britannia!"""
"""All Hail Britannia!"""
The cries were deafening. Everyone's heart swelled with pride.
This was their kingdom!
This was their army!
Marco would have also joined them had he not known that his son, Leone, would be the one facing off against them.
Even now, he had no idea how three hundred people could hold off an army that numbered in the tens of thousands.
The Vermilion Bird General, Vogel, watched all of this from a distance with a satisfied look on his face. Raising the morale of the army before a march was something that every general had to do in order to keep the soldiers in check.
Everyone had just recovered from an illness, so they needed someone to assure them that everything was going to be fine.
Dominic, who was riding on his Gryphon, continued to hover in the sky and smiled after hearing the Britannian Army's loud cheers.
"March!" Duran ordered.
"""Yes!"""
The soldiers at the front marched out of the gates in a well-ordered formation.
The civilians who had just recovered from their illness cheered them on from their homes, giving their blessings to the army that had begun its march.
The Britannian soldiers moved in an orderly formation with the infantry at the front, followed by the cavalry and the supply wagons.
Behind them came the rest of the army.
Their banners fluttered proudly in the wind.
The royal banner of Britannia flew at the center, surrounded by the banners of the noble families that had participated in the campaign.
Among them was the white banner of the Frontera Family.
Leone reminded his father that the banners of their family must be raised at all times, allowing him to see their location so that they wouldn't be involved in the attack that he planned on doing.
Although this wasn't the main bulk of the army, it was still impressive to see.
When the last wagon of the logistics team finally left the gates, Dominic and his Gryphon Riders soared ahead of everyone, serving as their scouts.
It was an impressive show of force that would make any general proud.
Duran watched the Gryphon Battalion with a faint smile on his face. They were the pride of their army, after all. As long as they kept watch from the skies, no one would be able to stop their army's advance.
Meanwhile, three miles away from Stoneguard Fortress, Leone and his men, who were currently hiding inside a cave, waited for the right moment.
They needed to time everything right, waiting for the moment the Gryphon Battalion flew past their hiding place.
On top of a tree, Blitz saw hundreds of Gryphons flying in formation. They covered three miles in just three minutes.
This wasn't even their maximum flying speed yet, but their regular.
When all the Gryphons had flown past their hiding place, Leone waited for another five minutes before he and his men left the safety of their cave.
Their plan was simple.
Unleash hell upon the marching army before dealing with the Gryphons that had just flown past them.
Astravor and the Pteranodon Riders were also in hiding. Their job would be to intercept the Gryphon Battalion the moment they were called back by their comrades.
Their hiding place was a good distance away from Leone, but since the Garuda Gryphon was the Guardian of the Aslan Tribe, Leone could talk to him through telepathy at all times.
Soon, Leone and his men summoned their mounts, and then hurried to the key location where they would set up their ambush.
Vlad had already used his skill, Eye of the Battlefield.
This skill allowed the teenager to see everything within a five-kilometer radius.
And so far, everything was going according to plan.
Since the Gryphon Battalion had moved ahead, there was no need to send scouts to move ahead of the army.
When Leone and his elite team finally reached their designated location, Daedalus summoned fifty Fireshard Catapults.
They had brought fifty shamans with them, including nearly all of the shamans from the Ravage Tribe.
All of them waited patiently until the enemy army came within their range.
Meanwhile, Astravor and the other Pteranodons had also made their move.
They had left their hiding place, flying close to where Leone and his people were waiting for their ambush.
Three hundred flying monsters, including Astravor, were a force to reckon with.
Since Leone's mission didn't count mounts as part of the three hundred individuals that his mission entailed, he made sure to bring as many as he could to serve as his own Flying Battalion.
"They're almost within striking range," Vlad said.
"Everyone, ready," Leone ordered.
In response, the shamans started to channel their spells into the Fireshard Catapults. When all fifty of them activated, even Leone felt the intense magical fluctuations coming out of them due to the proximity.
Vlad then raised his hand. The moment he closed it to form a fist, the catapults would all unleash their payload, wreaking havoc among their foes.
Leone knew that hundreds of people would die in this single bombardment, but he had no choice but to do it.
This was war.
And wars didn't prove who was right or wrong. It only showed who was left.
Finally, Vlad closed his hand into a fist, and then Leone's order reached everyone's ears.
"Fire!"
As soon as the order was given, fifty fireballs took off toward the sky.
Those who had sharp eyesight within the Britannian Army saw them from a distance and immediately cried out in alarm.
Alas, it was already too late.
They were all in a very tight formation, so escaping would not be easy!
General Duran was caught off guard by the bombardment, but he was a veteran of war. He immediately gave the order to spread out.
However, Leone's bombardment was also spread out in different directions, making sure that even if the enemy ran, they would still be hit by their surprise attack.
Soon, the sound of several explosions boomed across the surroundings, sending pillars of flames shooting outwards at the point of impact.
The explosions were so deafening, so bright, and so destructive that General Duran's orders were drowned out by the noise completely.
The smell of charred flesh.
The shouts of panic.
The wails of the dying.
And the anguished groans of those who were still alive yet seriously injured soon reached everyone's ears.
And while this was happening, Leone's second bombardment was already on its way.
"Spread out!" General Duran shouted at the top of his voice. "Spread out and evade!"
But just like what happened earlier, the thunderous explosions made everyone momentarily deaf, unable to hear their general's orders.
Leone didn't hesitate and ordered everyone to ride their flying mounts and retreat as fast as they could.
Now that they had stalled the main bulk of the army, it was time for them to attack the Gryphon Battalion, who had no idea that their main force had already been attacked from behind.
The one who flew ahead of the Aslan Tribe's aerial formation was none other than Astravor.
With him at the lead, Leone was certain that the prided Gryphon Battalion of the Kingdom of Britannia would no longer be able to raise their heads starting today.
