Chapter 196: Reconciliation, Su An’an Teases the Swan
"I..."
Su An’an’s breath hitched. It felt as if an invisible hand was wrapped around her throat, choking her so she couldn’t get a single word out.
She had imagined explaining things to Seville a thousand times.
But now that the moment was here, the explanation she had practiced over and over was stuck in her throat.
"Don’t want to talk?"
Seville’s eyes turned icy, and he shot to his feet. "Fine. I’m not interested in listening anyway."
"COUGH, COUGH, COUGH!"
Su An’an suddenly doubled over in a violent coughing fit, her face turning beet red.
Seville’s heart skipped a beat. He gripped the back of her neck with a large hand, forcing her to look up.
"Do you need to be taught how to breathe? Is your spiritual power just for show?!"
A holy Golden Light seeped from his fingertips, gently clearing her blocked windpipe.
"I was poisoned by the Rebel Army back then."
She finally caught her breath, tears welling in her eyes. "Not only did my evolution fail, but my spiritual power was also tainted. It made me unconsciously harm my favorite Beast Husband..."
Seville’s hand, which was gripping her chin, suddenly froze.
The distant bonfire CRACKLED, illuminating his suddenly constricted pupils.
"So that’s why."
He let go of her as if dropping a scorching piece of charcoal, his eyelashes lowering to hide all emotion.
Su An’an mustered her courage and hooked her pinky around his. "So... can you stop hating me now?"
Seville suddenly let out a cold laugh, but he didn’t pull his finger away.
"Hate you? A waste of time."
He paused, his voice low and almost dangerous. "You just said... ’favorite Beast Husband’?"
"Mhm!"
Su An’an blinked her big eyes.
’She didn’t mention that Seville was just one of her five favorite Beast Husbands.’
"The poison... is it all gone?"
The tips of Seville’s ears instantly turned so red they looked like they were bleeding.
Yet he maintained his stern expression and even deliberately deepened his voice.
"It was cleared out a long time ago."
Su An’an glanced at the bright red rim of his ear and was suddenly struck with the urge to tease him.
"So!"
She suddenly leaned in close, deliberately letting her warm breath ghost across his sensitive neck.
"You’d better be careful. I can control the ’way’ I harm you now."
Seville’s Wings flared open with a WHOOSH. His black and white Wings trembled in the firelight, casting a shadow that completely enveloped Su An’an.
Her rosy lips were inches away, like ripe cherries waiting to be plucked.
Seville’s Adam’s apple bobbed violently, and his canines unconsciously grazed his lower lip.
Just as he lowered his head, the crisp chime of silver bells suddenly shattered the charged atmosphere.
"Lord Divine Envoy!"
A brown-haired girl from the Deer Clan approached, her bare feet treading on moonlight, with luminous flower bells wrapped around her wrist.
A girl from the Rabbit Clan held a wreath woven from red roses.
Both females looked up at Seville and asked shyly,
"Would you like to hear a blessing song?"
"Anan, let your little brother relax. He just finished a fight, he should be enjoying himself."
Xiong Guo came over, holding a chubby Qiuqiu, and winked at Su An’an.
The old chieftain’s murky eyes glinted sharply.
"The females of the Gray Stone Tribe have always had the right to pursue their own happiness."
He glanced pointedly at Seville’s Wings.
"Especially a Beastman who can leave behind the strongest seed."
Manda’s lion ears twitched with pleasure as he laughed heartily.
"If I were twenty years younger..."
Before he could finish, Seville’s Wings snapped shut with a WHOOSH, sharp as blades. The pressure in the air dropped so low that the bonfire seemed to dim for a moment.
"He can’t."
Su An’an suddenly cut in, her palm pressed firmly against Seville’s tense forearm.
"Why can’t he?"
Xiong Guo pointed to the distant trees where several beastman couples had already disappeared into the shadows. "Look how happy they are!"
A green light suddenly bloomed at Su An’an’s fingertips as she gently caressed Seville’s Adam’s apple.
"Because this Divine Envoy’s ’way of communicating’ could be the death of a female!"
Seville’s hand shot out and clamped around the small of her back.
"Ooh! Don’t look! Don’t look!"
Qiuqiu covered his eyes, but his chubby little hands secretly parted to peek through the cracks.
The two young females’ faces instantly went pale, and they stumbled back a few steps.
Xiong Guo froze mid-scratch. "The Lord Divine Envoy is certainly extraordinary."
She quickly gave the two young females a look. "You should probably go find Beastmen who are more... suitable for you!"
The two young females fled in a panic. After they returned to their friends and said something, all the other females began to look at Seville with fear in their eyes.
Seville grabbed Su An’an’s wrist and dragged her into the shadows behind a large rock.
His black and white Wings flared open with a WHOOSH, completely blocking out the noise from the outside world.
He lowered his voice, his hot breath washing over her ear.
"What was the meaning of that?"
Pinned against the rock wall, Su An’an just let out a low laugh.
She deliberately poked his tense chest with a fingertip.
"Can’t you tell? I was helping you out!"
She drew out her words, a sly glint in her eyes. "My... lousy... little... brother."
"Shut up!"
Seville’s grip tightened abruptly, pinning her wrist against the rock wall above her head.
His other hand clamped onto her chin, his canines brushing dangerously against her lips.
"I’ll say it again. Don’t use that disgusting nickname!"
The light from the distant bonfire filtered through the gaps in his Wings, dappling their bodies.
Su An’an suddenly dropped her playful expression, tilting her head up to get closer to his tense jawline.
"Then what do you want me to call you? Sweetheart? Darling? Or maybe..."
Seville’s pupils contracted sharply. His Wings trembled uncontrollably as he gritted out, "If you call me something ridiculous again..."
"You’ll poison me so I can’t speak?"
She raised an eyebrow, a cunning smile on her face.
"No."
He suddenly leaned closer, his hot breath brushing past the tip of her ear.
"I’ll let you have a taste of the Swan Clan’s ’revenge’."
A flush of heat spread from the base of Su An’an’s ears. Before she had a chance to retaliate, an eerie whistle suddenly echoed from the distant forest. Seville’s pupils shrank, and his body tensed instantly.
「Three hundred meters away, atop a large tree, two figures in black cloaks looked down on the brightly lit Gray Stone Tribe.」
The lead Tiger Beastman was a full two meters tall, his twisted beastly face covered in grotesque yellow scales.
"Tainting only three hunting grounds today is too slow."
The Tiger Beastman’s voice was like grinding sandpaper, harsh and grating.
"The chief’s orders are clear. Before the acid rain season, all hunting grounds must be turned into deadlands."
The Jackal Wolf Beastman behind him responded with a tremble in his voice.
"But Captain, I just received a message from the chief. It says the Holy Priest from the Swan Clan and the Empress from the Empire, the ones who were sent from the outside..."
"...didn’t die in the Mutant Beast leader’s lair. They might have escaped, or..."
"Or they’ve been hidden away by those damn natives."
The Tiger Beastman’s pupils narrowed into thin slits, revealing vicious fangs.
"So the Gray Stone Tribe is celebrating because they found some treasure?"
The Jackal Wolf Beastman nodded hastily.
"All the other tribes are desolate, but this one is different. The Swan Beastman and the Empress must be there."
"Excellent. Then we’ll make an example of them."
The Tiger Beastman’s beastly eyes reflected the celebrating Gray Stone Tribe in the distance as he blew sharply on a special, blood-red bone whistle.
The eerie whistle sounded.
Countless black-bodied Mutant Beasts, resembling giant rats, surged toward the Gray Stone Tribe like a black tide.
