Chapter 543 Something’s Not Right
Seeing Lin Xue refusing to speak, Ling Feng said with a laugh, "Still playing mysterious, huh? Fine, tell me, how do you want to test it?"
"I’ll go get that book first; once I’m back, you’ll know."
After saying this, Lin Xue walked towards the door.
Just as Ling Feng was about to follow her, his phone rang—it was a message from Wang Laogen!
Seeing this, Ling Feng immediately stopped walking and took out his phone: "What’s up?"
"We’re going to rescue someone tonight; come over early, still at Mo Lan Manor," Wang Laogen said.
"Alright, I’ll hurry!"
Ling Feng ended the call and looked back at Lin Xue: "How about we wait, then? I’ll come back later and we can look at that thing!"
Lin Xue nodded, "Okay, you go do your thing, I’ll bring back the book first."
Turning back, Ling Feng then said to Li Yun, "I’ll have to trouble you to send me again."
After teleporting to the Nine Heavens, remembering that Chu Nan was still in the First Layer, he spoke to everyone, "The old man is inside; don’t bring up Chu Bo’s issue when you see him, just say I went to the provincial city to take care of some business, and don’t mention what it is!"
After giving these instructions, Ling Feng was helped by Li Yun to teleport to the provincial city.
"Shall I send you to Mo Lan Manor and wait for you there?" Li Yun asked.
"That works; I’d rather not have you here alone anyway, always feels weird!" Ling Feng said with a smile.
Li Yun gave him a glance, unsure exactly what he meant by weird, but didn’t ask.
The two set off by car and soon reached their destination, at a time when the lights were just starting to come on.
Seeing Ling Feng arrive, Wang Laogen asked with a grin, "How did it go? No reaction from Old Chu, right?"
Ling Feng shook his head: "No, he’s worried but doesn’t show it; his state of mind is still fairly calm."
"That’s good, after tonight, he won’t have to worry anymore!" Wang Laogen said with a laugh.
Ling Feng immediately gave a wry smile upon hearing this: "Don’t say it like that; usually when people say that, they won’t make it through the night!"
"Huh?"
Wang Laogen looked puzzled.
"Isn’t that what they say in movies? ’Once we get through today, we’ll be fine,’ but then they never do get through today!" Ling Feng said with a laugh.
Wang Laogen rolled his eyes and gave him a look: "That’s in movies, we’re not!"
Ling Feng smiled and didn’t speak. Seeing that only the old man was there, he curiously asked, "Where’s Mo Lan? Why isn’t she here?"
"What do you want with her?" Wang Laogen asked, his face full of caution.
"Why so nervous? Can’t I even ask?" Ling Feng retorted with an eye roll.
"My daughter is leading people to keep an eye on Kong Sheng’s movements. As soon as the kid returns, we’ll immediately launch an attack!" Wang Laogen explained.
Ling Feng uttered an "oh" before asking, "Where are they hiding? Should we go there now and wait together?"
"In a rush? Well, let’s head over then; waiting is waiting, wherever we are."
Wang Laogen said as he stood up.
Seeing that the two were about to leave, Li Yun quickly reminded Ling Feng: "Then you be careful."
"Don’t worry, nothing will happen!"
Ling Feng smiled, leaned in close to her ear and said, "Go back first later, take Wang Cai and the others, and keep them waiting. If really necessary, I’ll call them out to help!"
"Okay, got it!" Li Yun nodded in understanding.
They went downstairs and got into the car, and the driver started the vehicle to leave the manor. Wang Laogen glanced at Ling Feng and said, "You two seem quite close, just separating for this little while and you already seem reluctant?"
"What, are you jealous?" Ling Feng shot him a sidelong glance.
Wang Laogen rolled his eyes: "Pfft, what is there for an old man like me to be jealous of?"
As the car drove along the highway and gradually entered the city, Ling Feng, looking out the window with some curiosity, asked, "What? Kong Sheng actually settled down in the city?"
Wang Laogen looked at him: "What did you expect?"
"I thought he had found some abandoned factory or farmhouse to hide out in," Ling Feng said.
Wang Laogen: "That’s a foolish approach. Hiding in a vast and sparsely populated area would just make it easy for someone to round him up, wouldn’t it?"
"Only by hiding in the city, with its complex terrain and large population, can one conveniently evade and move around!"
Ling Feng listened and nodded in agreement, "You’re the cunning one here, you really know your stuff!"
"Scram!"
Wang Laogen glared at him irritably.
The car stopped by the roadside, and immediately someone emerged from the nearby bushes, opened the door, and got into the car.
This was a young man, who did not appear to be more than twenty years old, with a trace of youthfulness still on his face.
"Boss, what brings you guys here?"
"Ling Feng couldn’t wait any longer. Has Kong Sheng not returned yet?" Wang Laogen asked.
The young man shook his head: "No sign of him yet. He’ll probably show up around midnight."
"Understood. Keep everyone on the alert. Where’s Mo Lan?" Wang Laogen continued to ask.
"She’s gone upstairs."
A frown creased Wang Laogen’s brow: "That girl, why is she acting on her own?"
"Miss said that as a girl, she is less likely to arouse their suspicion," said the young man.
"Fine, go on back downstairs."
Wang Laogen waved him off, looking somewhat dejected.
After the car door closed, Ling Feng eyed him: "Worried?"
"What do you think?"
Wang Laogen asked tersely.
Ling Feng laughed: "Heh-heh, if you’re really that worried, shall I go down and have a look?"
Expecting an immediate agreement, Wang Laogen shook his head instead: "No need, my daughter is surely capable of protecting herself."
"All right then, I rather enjoy the downtime!" Ling Feng said with a laugh.
After saying this, he stuck his head out to glance at the building outside the car, a commercial office tower housing various companies and shops.
Since it was well past office hours, only about a dozen rooms in the building were lit.
After looking at those lit windows for a few moments, Ling Feng turned back to Wang Laogen: "Couldn’t we first rescue Chu Bo and then wait for Kong Sheng to come back?"
"You think I haven’t thought of that?"
Wang Laogen eyed him: "There are five people in that hideout, all of whom stay in constant contact with Kong Sheng. We could rush in now, but then we can forget about capturing Kong Sheng!"
"All right then, we’ll wait."
Catching Kong Sheng was a higher priority for Ling Feng than rescuing Chu Bo.
Time ticked by, and as Ling Feng watched, the lights in the building went out one by one until, unexpectedly, they were all extinguished!
A sense of foreboding rose in Ling Feng’s heart, and he looked at Wang Laogen again: "There couldn’t have been some sort of trouble, could there?"
"Don’t worry, it’s unlikely!"
Although Wang Laogen’s tone was firm, a trace of worry flickered in his eyes.
Seeing this, Ling Feng chuckled: "Tell me which floor it’s on, I’ll go have a look!"
"All right."
This time, Wang Laogen did not object and told him the floor and room number.
Ling Feng opened the door and stepped out of the car. As soon as he entered the building, a security guard immediately stood up.
Seeing that he was about to be stopped, Ling Feng chuckled, slightly shifted his frame, and vanished like a fleeting shadow!
