About three feet thick and covered in vibrant orange cups, the tentacles loomed over the ship for a few seconds before they thrashed down at us, aiming for everyone within reach; Taji and I were just out of range, but the rocking of the boat as those limbs slammed into the deck unsteadied us both.
I watched as a soldier ran up and swung a thick cutlass down into one of the red limbs, slicing through the flesh and showering herself in a spurt of blue blood coated her in moments; her blade sunk deep into the limb, and while that was undoubtedly painful the monster simply snatched its limb back and dragged the soldier with it.
Flung into the air, the soldier shouted profanities as she released her weapon and came crashing down onto the deck, slamming into the planks a few feet away and groaning loudly as she began to immediately crawl away.
More and more tentacles surged out of the water, thrashing around in the air and then slamming down suddenly whenever the monster felt it had an opening; seeing one heading for the recently flung soldier, I rushed forwards without thinking and dragged her away, tugging on the straps of her cuirass and barely managing to pull her away from where a tentacle dented the deck.
