Chapter 262: Deepscale Guardian
Andrey walked toward the remains of the Tide Serpent, its dissolving form scattering into fragments of light that drifted across the rocky island. At the center of the fading remnants, a cluster of gleaming materials lay embedded in the cracked stone—the creature’s core, scales, and a viscous, pearlescent sac that pulsed with a faint, inner light.
He knelt, carefully collecting each piece. The core was dense and cool to the touch, pulsating with a steady, rhythmic energy. The scales were smooth and dark, catching the light like polished obsidian. And the sac was warm and slick, its surface shimmering with a faint, iridescent sheen.
System: Materials acquired: Tide Serpent Core (Rare), Tide Serpent Scales (Rare), Tide Serpent Gallbladder (Rare). These materials can be used for crafting high-tier equipment and consumables.
Andrey stored the materials in his inventory, a quiet sense of satisfaction settling in his chest. "These will be useful."
Sarah peered over his shoulder, her eyes widening at the gleaming materials. "Those scales look like they’d make incredible armor."
Sein crossed her arms, her gaze sharp but approving. "Not bad for a serpent that nearly drowned us."
Lisa smiled softly, her hands still glowing faintly with residual mana. "We should keep moving. The core is probably deeper in."
The team pressed forward, crossing the next bridge of light. The islands grew more frequent, their surfaces dotted with crystalline formations and clusters of pale, bioluminescent flora. The air was cooler here, carrying a faint, mineral scent.
Sarah’s voice was low, cautious. "It’s too quiet."
Andrey’s Ki senses stretched outward. "There’s something ahead."
The team rounded the cluster of crystalline formations, and the landscape opened into a wide, shallow lagoon. The water was clear, its surface reflecting the pale, luminous sky. At the edge of the lagoon, a figure stood—tall, its skin covered in pale, iridescent scales, its elongated head tipped with rows of needle-sharp teeth.
[Deepscale Guardian – Rank A]
The creature’s head turned slowly, its unblinking eyes fixing on the intruders. Its gills flared, and a low, guttural hiss escaped its throat.
Sarah’s hand tightened on her wand. "That’s... not a fish."
Sein’s voice was flat, unimpressed. "It’s a fish person. And it looks like it wants to kill us."
Lisa’s hands glowed as she prepared her barrier. "It’s not alone."
From the water around them, more shapes began to emerge—Deepscale Guardians, their forms rising from the lagoon with fluid, silent grace. They surrounded the team, their tridents raised, their unblinking eyes gleaming with predatory intent.
Andrey’s staff was already in his hand, his gaze sweeping the encirclement. "They’ve already chosen to fight. Get ready for battle."
Sein’s grin was sharp, eager. "Now you’re speaking my language."
The lead Guardian lunged, its trident sweeping toward Andrey’s chest. He sidestepped, the tip grazing his shoulder as he drove the butt of his staff into its ribs. The creature hissed, staggering, but two more were already closing in.
"Sein, left flank! Sarah, cover the right! Lisa, barrier up!"
The battle erupted in a clash of steel, fire, and shimmering light.
Sein moved like a living flame. Her body twisted as she ducked under a sweeping trident strike, the weapon’s tip grazing her hair. She drove her fist upward into the Guardian’s jaw—flames erupted on impact, sending the creature staggering back. Before it could recover, she spun, her leg sweeping its feet from under it. As it fell, she brought her elbow down into its chest.
"Crimson Impact!"
The creature dissolved into mist. But two more were already closing in, their tridents thrusting in unison. Sein leaped, using one of their shafts as a springboard, and flipped over them. Flames trailed from her fists as she landed behind them and drove both palms into their backs. The Guardians crumpled, their forms flickering before dissolving.
Sarah hovered above the fray. Her wand spun in her grip as she unleashed a flurry of pink projectiles. One Guardian raised its trident to block, but Sarah’s aim was precise—the projectiles curved around the shaft, striking its exposed shoulder and sending it reeling.
Another Guardian lunged at her from below, leaping with surprising speed. Sarah twisted in midair, her hand glowing as she summoned a concentrated beam of pink energy.
"Pink Nova!"
The beam pierced the Guardian’s chest mid-leap. It dissolved before it could reach her. Sarah landed lightly, already pivoting to face the next threat.
Lisa stood at the center of the team. Her hands glowed with mint-green light as she wove her barrier around them. A Guardian’s trident slammed against the shimmering surface—frost spread across the impact point. Lisa gritted her teeth, reinforcing the barrier with a pulse of mana. The frost receded.
"I can’t hold this forever!"
Another Guardian lunged from the side, its trident aimed at Sarah’s exposed flank. Lisa reacted instantly, extending her barrier into a localized shield that deflected the strike.
"Starlight Burst—chain!"
A wave of mint-green stars erupted from her hands, ricocheting between three Guardians and leaving glowing marks on their bodies, slowing their movements.
Andrey was a whirlwind in the center. He deflected a trident strike with a sharp crack, pivoted, and drove the butt of his staff into a Guardian’s knee—it buckled, and he followed up with a sweeping strike to its head.
Another lunged at his blind spot. He spun, catching its shaft on his staff, and twisted, disarming it before driving his palm into its chest. The Guardian’s form rippled violently, its scales cracking like dry earth before it shattered into a spray of glittering mist that scattered across the stone floor.
A Guardian leaped at him from above, its trident aimed at his skull. Andrey sidestepped, grabbed its arm mid-air, and used its momentum to slam it into the ground. The impact cracked the stone, and the creature’s body convulsed once before unraveling—its scales peeling away like ash, dissolving into faint, silvery particles that drifted upward and faded into the dim light.
He straightened, his staff planted firmly, his breathing controlled. "Sein, push left! Sarah, cover the right! Lisa, barrier—steady!"
Sein’s flames roared as she drove her fists into the nearest Guardian’s chest. "Crimson Cataclysm!"
The explosion of fire scattered three more Guardians. Their forms flickered as they dissolved. Sein landed in a crouch, already scanning for the next threat, her flames flickering with anticipation.
Sarah’s wand blazed as she unleashed a torrent of pink energy. "Heartstorm Apocalypse!"
A cascade of pink hearts rained down—each strike precise, each one finding its mark. The Guardians faltered, their formations breaking as the energy tore through their ranks.
Lisa’s hands glowed as she expanded her barrier, the shimmering dome pushing back the Guardians that pressed against it. "They’re thinning! We have a path!"
