Chapter 52: Her Butler’s Truth [1]: Young Adrian
HONKKK!!
A strange sound snapped Renelle out of her thoughts causing her to immediately turn around.
Approaching her was a strange large carriage that didn’t seem to have any horses or beasts pulling it.
She lifted her hand to create an ice wall between it and the carriage that seemed to have no intention of slowing down, but strangely enough, she couldn’t.
Renelle tried feeling her spirit contract, and whilst it was still there, none of her mana could be moved towards it.
By reflex, she lifted both arms before her face, the moment the metal carriage was close enough, but to her surprise it just harmlessly passed through her.
But that didn’t mean all was fine, as the next second,
CRASH!
A loud crash was heard in the direction the large carriage headed towards, and when she turned around, she noticed it had ran into a much smaller carriage.
"What is this...?"
This was very clearly not magic and she had spotted no beasts attack, nor had sensed any mana signatures.
Chaos just erupted the moment the carriages crashed into each other.
She could see people running towards the crash, while others took out some rectangular object, placing them on their ears or pointing it in the direction of the crash.
Curious, Renelle walked towards the crash and through the windows of the smaller carriage, she could see people.
A man and a woman with their bloody heads leaning back on the seats, their eyes completely blank.
"They’re dead," She immediately muttered, seeing their lifeless expression.
But as if something was pulling her closer to the carriage, she continued walking until she stopped where the back seat was.
Renelle froze as she spotted a third person in the back seat, a child, seemingly no older than five.
His had black hair and empty grey eyes, that were staring forward without an ounce of emotion.
Almost as if he hadn’t been involved in a crash and two people weren’t laying dead before him.
The child slowly turned towards the car’s window, but he wasn’t looking at the people desperately trying to get him out, instead, he was calmly looking directly at her.
Even though no one else seemed to be able to see her, the child seemed to be aware of her presence.
The moment their eyes locked, a certain name immediately appeared in her mind, and although she wasn’t certain, she still called out,
"Adrian?"
The moment she said the name, the world around her seemed to turn blurry as it started deconstructing and reconstructing itself.
Renelle’s vision turned clear again and she realized that she was in a different location, it was some type of white hallway.
There were long metal chairs by the walls of the hallway, most being empty while some had people sitting on them.
There were also people walking around, some in white gowns, others in blue, but she paid them no mind, instead she looked ahead.
There, she noticed the same kid from earlier sitting on one of the metal chairs with the same blank expression.
As she walked towards him, she suddenly overheard someone speaking, "I told you that child was the devil, just look at him, he doesn’t even look like he feels anything."
The words were hushed and spoken in a strange language, yet clear enough for Renelle to hear and somehow understand.
She stopped walking and her gaze moved slightly to the side, landing on two people, a man and a woman seated a few chairs away, their eyes occasionally darting toward the child.
"I heard he didn’t cry," the woman continued, her voice laced with unease, "not even once."
"Both his parents died right in front of him," she added, "and he didn’t even show an ounce of emotion."
"Shush," the man finally said, "as his uncle and aunt, we still have to seem supportive, that’s the only way the government can let us adopt him and then, his parents’ wealth wealth will be ours."
Renelle’s brows furrowed as she looked at the two, she might not understand what a government is, but one thing was clear, these two planned on using the child to gain whatever wealth his parents left behind.
"How pathetic," she muttered as she turned back to the child, continued approaching and stopped only a short distance away from him.
"Adrian?" She didn’t know why, but the name of her butler kept repeating itself in her head over and over again.
Surprisingly, the child turned towards her, and for a few seconds, she could’ve sworn he was looking directly at her.
Young Adrian turned back, continuing to look forward without saying anything, until a man in white coat approached and sat by him.
Renelle watched the two silently sit together for a while, before the man suddenly tried making conversation.
"Do you watch cartoons?" He spoke up and young Adrian turned towards him before shaking his head.
"I see," the man said, adjusting his glasses slightly as he studied the boy’s blank expression.
Most children his age would be crying, right now, but this one’s expression was completely blank, almost as if he felt nothing.
And that made it even harder for him to ease the kid into a conversation since he wasn’t sure if his lack of expression was due to shock or a medical condition.
’I wish I had paid attention to conversation 101,’ he thought to himself, ’oh right, we didn’t have anything like that in med school.’
The man exhaled softly before reaching into the bag beside him and pulling out a thin, black rectangular object.
"Then... how about this?" he said, keeping his tone gentle, careful not to startle him, "It’s called a manhwa."
Young Adrian turned towards him and looked at the glass-like screen of the rectangular object that was now lit up.
"It’s like a story," he continued, flipping a few pages slowly, "but with pictures. Easier to follow."
There was no change in the kid’s expression, making the man feel even more awkward.
"This one is about a hero who goes back in time after failing to protect someone important to him."
The man chuckled awkwardly when he didn’t get a reaction.
"Well... most kids like things like this, thought you might too," he placed the device gently in Adrian’s hands before standing up, "you can keep scrolling through for something you like, while I talk to your uncle."
With that, the man walked towards the kid’s guardians, leaving him scrolling through the phone alone, already having a diagnosis.
Young Adrian continued scrolling through the different manhwa’s, utterly uninterested in any, but then he suddenly stopped on one that only had a single Chapter,
The Saintess And The Silver Crown.
