I Was The Only Omega In The Beast World

Chapter 185: CP: 185 Visitors From The Bear Tribes

The cubs calmed down by degrees.

Sally, appropriately chastened, took the second boy and the third from Leo and rocked them with the focused determination of someone making amends. Leo had Roar against his chest, one large hand spanning the small body completely, the rumbling subsiding as the cub found the warm solidity of his father and decided it was an acceptable substitute for sleep. The girl with heterochromic eyes—had been reclaimed by Alex and was making her displeasure known in short, imperious bursts that were growing less frequent as she nursed again.

Naga watched all of this with the expression of someone cataloging information for future reference.

"System," the serpent lord said, addressing the air in the way everyone had learned to address something without a visible form, "what is your current operational status?"

[Partial,] System said. [The connection to the Host is restored at approximately seventy-three percent capacity. The remaining interference is coming from the shadow’s residual presence in the valley—it’s not actively blocking, but the damage to the link hasn’t fully healed. I expect full restoration within a few days, assuming the stones continue their current trajectory.]

"The stones are fully lit," Alex said.

[I know.Their awakening help me restore my link with you. That’s how I was able to contact you, Host.] System’s voice carried something in it that Alex was learning to recognize—the particular quality of a presence that had been cut off from everything it cared about and was now, carefully, taking stock of what remained.

[All seven. The births triggered the final activation. The cubs’ resonance with the artifacts is—remarkable. Even by the standards of what you’ve accomplished, Host. This is not something I had modeled.]

"River said the babies were the echo," Sally offered, from across the alcove. She was still rocking the third cub, her movements automatic, her eyes bright. "Of the artifacts hearing Alex’s voice for so long."

[River is correct,] System said. [And should be enrolled in some form of advanced study at the earliest opportunity. His observation skill is far enhanced for this era. At least compare to his siblings. ]

"Well he’s always been like this," Alex said.

[Yes. Parented by a highly fertile omega and beastman with pure, direct bloodline of serpents are bound to create some exceptional beings. ]

" Uh, Thanks. "

As they talked, they heard multiple loud thud outside, in the courtyard. Granite’s tribesmen had arrived with enough food to feed twice the sanctuary’s population, which was either coincidence or the bears’ brand of emotional expression. They set everything down without ceremony, they even brought their favorite sugar syrup—something they would die for. They looked at the four lion cubs arranged across various laps and arms, and stood there for a moment with an expression that he clearly hadn’t prepared for. And somewhere from the crowd of giant bears a small, petite figure jumped out.

Pebble.

The bear tribe’s future chief.

She had a big smile plastered on her face.

The year of chief-training had carved new definition into her shoulders and arms, turned the soft roundness of her cheeks into something fiercer, her skin toned, more muscular but agile. She looked ready to wrestle anyone who crosses her the wrong way.

"Alex!" she half-shouted, half-whispered, clearly trying to respect the cubs and failing spectacularly at volume control. "You did it. Four. Four whole lion cubs. I ran the whole way from the tribe when Granite sent the signal."

Behind her, the bear tribesmen rumbled approval, assorting the woven baskets and leather bags heavy with roasted roots, honey-glazed meats, and clay jars of the thick, amber sugar syrup they guarded like treasure. Boulder who was also there greeted Alex with a nod and proceed to continue whatever he was doing.

Pebble’s gaze dropped to the four small bodies scattered across Alex’s lap and Leo’s arms, and her entire face softened in a way that made the new hardness of her look almost comical. "Can I...?"

Alex shifted the first girl carefully to his left breast so the girl could keep nursing without interruption. "Careful. They’re louder than they look."

Pebble dropped to her knees beside the nest, movements surprisingly graceful for someone built like a small boulder. She reached out with both hands cupped, palms up, the way bear cubs were taught to greet new siblings. Roar immediately lunged for her thumb, latching on with a determined rumble and refusing to let go.

[Bear presence appears to have a calming effect on lion cub temperament,] System noted, and Alex could hear it in his mind.

[Filing this for future reference. Granite’s resting heartbeat frequency may act as a regulating signal. Recommend proximity during fussy periods.]

"You’re filing behavioral data on my a-day-old children," Alex said.

[It is my duty. That’s what I do. Would you prefer I stop?]

"No," Alex admitted. "Actually no. Keep going."

[The second boy has Leo’s exact ear-flick pattern when startled. The first girl is already tracking faces with deliberate attention—she has been watching each person in the alcove in sequence, as though conducting her own assessment. The third boy looks lazy and sleeps most of the time but he has the most dominant presence of a lion. The fourth—]

"Roar," Siddy supplied, from where he’d wedged himself between Granite and the wall to get a better view.

[The fourth has not stopped monitoring his environment since birth. I have recorded forty-seven distinct sounds from him, ranging from grumble to warning-adjacent roar. He is aware of everyone in this alcove and their positions at all times. This is not typical newborn behavior.]

"He gets it from Leo," Alex said.

"I was not this suspicious as an infant," Leo said, from the other side of the nest.

[I have no data on Leo’s infancy. However, current behavioral modeling suggests a strong inheritance pattern.]

"You’ve been back for only an hour," Leo said. "You’re already—"

[Accurate?]

A pause.

Leo’s tail flicked. The cub in his arms grumbled. Leo adjusted his hold, and the grumbling stopped.

"Accurate," Leo said, flatly, which was as close to agreeing as he was going to get.
