I Was The Only Omega In The Beast World

Chapter 182: CP: 182 I’ve Got You, I’ve Got All Of You

The alcove settled into a quiet, exhausted peace.

The four cubs had been fed—Alex’s milk coming in with surprising speed, although he had to squeeze his chest like a cow’s udders to produce enough for four of them. At least it was enough to feed them—babies were now sleeping in a warm pile near their mother. Leo had not moved from that position in the hour since the last cub was born. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor, his expression was of the blankness of someone who was feeling too much to process any of it.

Naga’s coils surrounded them all—Alex, Leo, the cubs—a protective circle that kept the warmth in and the world out. Lucas had positioned himself at Alex’s back, one hand resting on the now-softening curve of his belly, as though reassuring himself that Alex was still whole. Zale has hopped into the small pool nearby to cool himself off, his tail half dipped due to small size of the pool.

Sally had retreated to the entrance of the alcove, where she was writing furiously in her notebook, occasionally looking up to stare at the pile of lion cubs with an expression of dazed wonder.

The snakelings had been allowed in, one at a time, to meet their new siblings.

Jade had gone first, as was his right as eldest. He had circled the cubs slowly, his tongue flickering out to taste the air, his scales shifting through colors Alex had learned to read as deep concentration. "They’re very small," he said finally. "Smaller than we were."

"You were small too," Alex reminded him.

"We were elegant. These are..." Jade paused, searching for the right word. "Furry."

"They’re lions. Lions have fur."

Jade nodded slowly. "We will teach them to slither. Even if they don’t have scales."

"That’s not how things work."

" If it doesn’t work, we’ll make it work. "

Jade’s hood flared once—pride, quickly suppressed—and he withdrew to make room for his siblings.

Ripple had cried, and pressed his small serpent face against Leo’s arm with a whispered "they’re beautiful" that made Leo’s ears perked. Onyx and Sterling had come together, examining the cubs with the intensity of twins who did everything as a unit. Onyx had declared the youngest— the biggest cub "fierce" in a tone of deep approval. Sterling had counted them three times to be sure.

Siddy had been physically restrained by Granite from climbing into the cub pile.

"I just want to see if they’re soft," Siddy protested, dangling from Granite’s massive paw.

"You can see from here."

"BUT TOUCHING IS BETTER—"

"Siddy." Alex’s voice was tired but firm. "They’re sleeping. They’re brand new. They need rest before they can meet you properly."

Siddy’s scales drooped. "Promise?"

"I promise."

Siddy subsided, curling into a disconsolate pile near the entrance, where he proceeded to give the cubs the most intense stare Alex had ever seen on a four-year-old.

River came last.

He didn’t circle the cubs or examine them or ask questions. He simply settled beside Leo, pressed his small head against the lion’s arm, and closed his eyes.

"They smell like family," River said.

Leo’s throat worked. "They are family."

"Yes." River’s tail curled around Leo’s wrist. "So are you."

The silence that followed was full.

---

Night fell over the sanctuary.

The alcove was quiet now—the cubs sleeping, the snakelings finally persuaded to rest in the nursery cavern with Granite keeping watch, Sally nodding off in a wood log she’d dragged to the entrance "just in case." Zale had retreated to his original pool, but his mist still hung in the air, cool and constant. Lucas had gone to check the perimeter with the wolves, though he’d left reluctantly, with a promise to return quickly.

Naga had not moved.

His coils surrounded Alex and Leo and the cubs, a living wall of warmth and protection. His eyes were half-closed, but Alex knew he wasn’t sleeping—the serpent lord was watching, waiting, ready for anything.

Alex lay against Naga’s coils, his body finally beginning to feel like something other than a battlefield. The ache in his lower back had faded to a dull throb. The pressure in his pelvis was gone, replaced by a strange, hollow emptiness that would take time to adjust to. His breasts were still full, still tender, but the cubs had fed well and the worst of the engorgement had eased.

He was exhausted. He was sore. He was happier than he could remember being in a very long time.

Leo hadn’t moved from his position, either. The four cubs were still piled against his chest, their small bodies rising and falling with each breath. His tail stilled near him, his golden eyes fixed on their faces with an intensity that bordered on devotional.

"You should sleep," Alex said quietly.

"I can’t." Leo’s voice was rough. "Every time I close my eyes, I think I’ll open them and they’ll be gone."

"They’re not going anywhere."

"You don’t know that." Leo’s hand moved, stroking the smallest cub’s fur with a gentleness that seemed impossible from those battle-scarred fingers. " Before you. Before this family. I’ve never had anything that was mine. Not that I could keep. And now—" He stopped. Swallowed. "Four. I have four children. Four small people who are going to look at me like I matter. Like I’m someone worth looking at."

Alex reached out, his hand covering Leo’s on the cub’s small body. "You are someone worth looking at. You always were. You just never let yourself believe it."

Leo’s breath came out in a shudder. "Alex—"

"Sleep," Alex said. "I’ll watch them. I’ll watch all of you. Nothing’s going to happen while I’m watching."

Leo’s eyes searched his face for a long moment. Then, slowly, he let his head fall back against Naga’s coils. His ears and tail relaxed, just slightly. His hand stayed on his daughter’s fur.

"I love you," Leo said. The words came out rough and unprepared, as though they’d escaped without permission. "I love you. I love them. I love all of this. I didn’t know I could love this much."

Alex’s throat tightened. "I know."

"Sleep," Naga murmured, his voice low and warm. "We’ll be here when you wake. All of us."

Leo’s eyes closed.

His breathing evened out, slowed, deepened. The cubs shifted in their sleep, pressing closer to his warmth. The oldest one—the girl—made a sound that might have been a purr.

Alex watched them for a long time.

He watched the rise and fall of Leo’s chest. He watched the four small bodies nestled against him, safe and warm and alive. He watched Naga’s coils shift slightly, adjusting to keep everyone comfortable. He felt the cool presence of Zale’s mist at the edges of the alcove, and somewhere in the distance, he heard Lucas’s voice giving quiet instructions to the wolf patrol.

The sanctuary was standing. The stones were warm. The shadow was still waiting, somewhere beyond the ridge, patient and watching.

But tonight, there were four new lives in the world.

Four small, fierce, perfect lion cubs who had roared their way into existence and demanded to be loved.

Alex pressed a kiss to the smallest cub’s head. She stirred, grumbled, settled.

"I’ve got you," he whispered. "I’ve got all of you."

He closed his eyes.
