Chapter 127 127: I Am an Apprentice in Kamar-Taj
After a night of sound sleep, Kael walked out of his room and changed into the monk robes Wong had prepared for him last night to welcome his first day in Kamar-Taj.
"How did you sleep last night?"
Wong lived in the room right next to Kael's and asked with an expressionless face.
It was clear that he probably wasn't very well-liked here; with that expression, anyone who didn't know better would think he was looking for a fight.
"It was alright, except for the bed being too hard, the quilt being too heavy, and the Wi-Fi being too slow."
Kael spoke the truth. The living conditions in Kamar-Taj certainly couldn't compare to his own home, but as for his quilt alone, it was worth tens of thousands of dollars.
They say capitalist society is very nurturing, and that's indeed true.
But the prerequisite is having money; without money, you're just fertilizer.
"Sorcerers do not need to pursue such a material life. We pursue the liberation of the soul and explore the true essence of the universe."
Wong said with a serious and earnest face, trying to correct the bad habits in Kael's heart so as not to corrupt Kamar-Taj.
Even far from American soil, he had seen Kael in entertainment news reports plenty of times in the past.
"Is that so? I originally wanted to invest ten million to help you improve the living conditions."
Kael said calmly, exuding an overbearing sense of wealth.
"Ahem, actually, appropriately improving material conditions also helps a sorcerer go further on the path of magic."
Wong's tone shifted, giving Kael a 'you know what I mean' look.
At this point in time, Wong was not yet the librarian; he was in charge of Kamar-Taj's logistics.
The sorcerers weren't short of money, but they weren't exactly rich either.
Except for those like Wong who came from a family of sorcerers, most of the sorcerers in Kamar-Taj were in average economic circumstances.
Just look at Strange; if his life hadn't truly reached a dead end, how could he have found his way here for no reason?
This was because realistic means could no longer change the economic predicament he faced.
"Send me the account number."
With one sentence, Kael made Wong feel the power of capital. Wong couldn't help but purse his lips, forcing a strained smile onto his face, and asked with a hint of flattery in his tone.
"Mr. Wayne, what would you like for breakfast? I'll have someone make it for you right away!"
"Soy milk and fried dough sticks will do. Just call me Kael; we're all fellow disciples. If you have any financial problems in the future, you can come to me."
Kael said, patting Wong's arm.
One must learn to leverage their own advantages when doing things.
Sorcerers are also human. Although they hide in Kamar-Taj to learn spells, they still have to eat and drink, and they have families to support. Which part of that can be done without dollars?
Paving the way with money is a bit vulgar, but most people in this world are vulgar. If you don't do something vulgar, they won't even be happy.
In just a few sentences, Wong already considered Kael a good friend. The two walked to the dining hall for a meal with their arms around each other's shoulders, leaving the passing sorcerers and apprentices stunned.
Could Wong's bandit-like face actually smile so radiantly?
"It seems you two are getting along quite well."
The Ancient One appeared with a smile, seemingly having anticipated this scene.
"Teacher."
Kael stood up and greeted her.
"Follow me. We're ready to start your lessons for today."
The Ancient One, with her hands behind her back, led Kael to the grounds where apprentices practiced spells and combat.
Mordo was in charge of teaching the basic courses. He was also a disciple of the Ancient One, a Black man with short hair who looked serious and solemn, wearing green monk robes.
This made him stand out remarkably among the crowd of white-clad apprentices.
"You'll start by learning some basic courses with Master Mordo."
The Ancient One said as she brought Kael before Mordo.
"Hello, Master Mordo. Just call me Kael."
Kael reached out and shook hands with Mordo.
After the Ancient One left, Mordo looked Kael up and down and said with a complex tone.
"The Ancient One hasn't taken a disciple in a long time."
"Maybe it's because my talent is too high."
"I hope so."
Mordo twitched the corner of his mouth, noncommittal.
While speaking, he led Kael into the ranks of the apprentices.
For apprentices who have just started on the path of mysticism, these gestures and incantations with strong psychological suggestions can better help them successfully enter the world of mysticism.
However, once they truly grasp the essence of magic and look back, they will find that these gestures and incantations are not necessary for spellcasting.
Their main purpose is to establish a connection with beings in the unknown.
Faith and consciousness are the easiest things to cross dimensional barriers, and these gestures and incantations are a means to strengthen that faith.
For Kael, he could skip this stage directly because the mystical power required for spellcasting already existed within his body; there was no need to perceive or establish a connection.
Other sorcerers seek power from without, while Kael seeks it from within himself.
From this point alone, he had already created an insurmountable chasm between himself and the vast majority of sorcerers.
When he saw cyan sparks blooming at Kael's fingertips, forming a clearly visible magic circle, Mordo realized that this guy's style was completely off.
Since when were Kamar-Taj's spells this color?
And isn't this magic circle a bit too large? Why is the diameter of even the most basic circular spell over two meters?
The surrounding apprentices looked at the flickering cyan magic circle in front of Kael, their eyes almost dazzled. Then they looked at the magic circles they had struggled to construct, and suddenly felt like they were learning a fake version.
"Master Mordo, what is the next step?"
Kael maintained the stability of the magic circle. This level of consumption was practically zero for him, and his calm expression showed no sign of pressure.
Although these gestures and incantations had no fundamental effect on him, they had been refined over time and could assist in guiding power to some extent, so they weren't entirely useless.
"..."
Mordo didn't speak, but looked back at the Ancient One. Seeing her nod calmly, he took a deep breath, pretended nothing happened, and continued with the lesson.
In just one morning, Kael completed several basic courses. His memory and learning ability were right there; he could replicate Mordo's demonstrations one-to-one after seeing them just once.
"Mastering the Sling Ring is essential for learning magic..."
In Mordo's advanced course, Kael received his own Sling Ring and put it on the index and ring fingers of his left hand.
The moment he put it on, Kael realized that the Sling Ring was actually a medium, its main function being to provide a sorcerer with a perspective to observe dimensions.
A sorcerer is essentially just a human being in the physical world. Under normal circumstances, no organ in the body can break through the barriers between dimensions, let alone observe them.
The Sling Ring is equivalent to an external organ.
When a sorcerer injects consciousness, they can use it to observe the world from a higher dimensional perspective.
Some can even use the Sling Ring to observe the multiverse.
To put it bluntly, this is some big shot granting permissions to their followers.
For the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj, the importance of the Sling Ring is almost self-evident.
Even if it isn't as scarce in quantity as other artifacts.
"What you need to do is concentrate, visualize the destination in your mind, and let your gaze transcend the world before you..."
Mordo spoke about the key to using the Sling Ring, but his eyes couldn't stop glancing at Kael.
Using a Sling Ring sounds simple, but it actually has high requirements for an apprentice's meditation.
Without enough mental power to support it, how could one detailedly visualize the world in their mind?
The mind is different from the body; it is very difficult to temper, and it is hard to see results intuitively.
Despite everyone present being an apprentice, except for Kael, the others either came from mystical families or had been studying here for many years. They all possessed a certain level of meditation skill and had tempered their spirits for years.
Otherwise, Mordo wouldn't have arranged for them to learn how to use the Sling Ring.
If not for the Ancient One's special permission, under normal circumstances, no matter how talented Kael was, he would have had to settle in for a while.
Because using a Sling Ring is a very dangerous thing.
The permission to observe and open space and dimensions is tied to a small Sling Ring. Any sorcerer who puts it on can possess the power to touch the multiverse.
But even a slight deviation or a failed teleportation coordinate shift would be a minor matter; the fear is that it might attract the attention of beings from other dimensions.
After all, while you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back at you.
Many times, the fall and corruption of a sorcerer is inadvertently set in motion while using a Sling Ring.
However, Kael's mental power completely exceeded Mordo's expectations. The cyan sparks were like the frame of a mirror, presenting the world he visualized in his mind as a stable and clear reflection.
"Where is this?"
Mordo came to Kael's side and looked toward the other side of the Portal.
The perspective was from the top down.
On a T-shaped stage, Victorias Secret models were walking with confident strides in sheer lingerie, showcasing their figures. From this angle, one could take in all their beauty.
"The time I calculated was indeed correct."
Kael nodded and said. In terms of results alone, being able to open a Portal the first time he put on a Sling Ring was indeed extraordinary.
But using a Sling Ring to get a free look at a Victorias Secret lingerie show... that was a bit hard to describe.
Mordo's eyes widened, and he looked a bit dazed.
This dazzling world momentarily blurred his vision.
It wasn't until the Ancient One coughed as a reminder that Mordo straightened his expression, glared warningly at the surrounding apprentices who were trying to crowd around, and said sternly.
"The Sling Ring is not for you to do such things!"
"Sorry."
Kael cooperatively turned his hand, and the image in the Portal changed, showing his own home.
Kael stepped inside, and the Portal remained stable.
A moment later.
He walked out holding a Coke, and the Portal closed behind him.
Kael took a sip of Coke and said.
"It doesn't seem that hard."
Compared to a certain fat guy who opened a multiversal Portal the first time he used a Sling Ring, Kael's performance was within a range Mordo could barely accept.
After all, to be taken as a disciple by the Ancient One, Mordo was naturally a genius himself. Although he wasn't as stunning as Kael when he first used the Sling Ring, he wasn't far off.
It couldn't be helped; there were too many Kaels in various fields, and the cumulative advantage was too great.
And strictly speaking, Kael wasn't starting from scratch; he already had a significant foundation in spellcasting, and his control over mental power was no worse than that of an old sorcerer with years of experience.
However, even mastering the Sling Ring only meant completing the basic courses of Kamar-Taj, barely graduating from the ranks of apprentices. Kael still had much to learn in the future.
"These are all my private collection. There is no forbidden knowledge in Kamar-Taj, but you shouldn't come into contact with them too early."
The Ancient One brought Kael to the library of Kamar-Taj and handed him a key.
As the apprentice of the Sorcerer Supreme, one ought to have some privileges, right?
However, in Kael's view, this was just the Ancient One being lazy. If she could let a student teach themselves, why waste time teaching? She had long passed the age of gaining satisfaction from it.
"Then may I ask, Teacher, when can you hand the Time Stone over to me?"
"Here, you should call it the Eye of Agamotto."
The Ancient One paused before continuing.
"We'll talk about that after you've browsed through my entire collection."
"Then I'll have to hurry."
Kael muttered.
He knew that before long, the Ancient One's collection would become incomplete, with a few pages being torn out by someone.
The Ancient One had, of course, observed all of this happening.
But that was exactly what she wanted, in order to pave the way for the next Sorcerer Supreme.
"By the way, do not open Portals in the library."
The Ancient One remembered something else before leaving and stopped to remind Kael.
"Got it."
If he hadn't seen "Doctor Strange," Kael might have actually listened to the Ancient One.
The person currently in charge of the library was an elderly sorcerer.
"Could you help me find Astral Projection?"
Kael approached the librarian and asked.
This was a magic carefully selected by the future Sorcerer Supreme; there was no reason not to study it for reference.
"Kael, this magic is a bit too early for you."
The elderly sorcerer was serious and responsible, refusing Kael's request and instead handing him other low-level spells.
Astral Projection is a dangerous magic that even high-level sorcerers find difficult to master.
With one slip-up, Astral Projection becomes soul separation.
If the soul cannot return to the body for a long time as a result, the only outcome awaiting the sorcerer is death.
When other sorcerers attempt to learn this magic, they always have other sorcerers looking after them.
"If I master these spells, will I be able to learn Astral Projection?"
Kael took the books handed over by the librarian and asked in return.
"Of course not enough. You must at least finish learning these spells."
The elderly sorcerer pointed to a wall of books behind him.
