Veil of Aether

Chapter 91

Aterix stood firm, his stance unwavering, as the giant viper made of ember ash fire runes lunged towards him. The creature’s fiery fangs were inches away from striking, but Aterix’s eyes remained devoid of emotion, unblinking and still, as if the danger before him didn’t even faze him.

Before the viper could land its deadly blow, something extraordinary happened. The viper seemed to fragment, each individual piece of the fire-infused creature breaking apart with a series of intricate runes unraveling it. The flame-like structure disintegrated mid-air, its ashes swirling in the air like an unnatural storm. It was as though the very essence of the creature had been pulled apart—deconstructed to its most basic components by an unseen force.

Kei Y’s eyes widened, his Ember Ash fire Viper had no longer been his creation, but Aterix’s method of destruction. The reassembled parts of the viper, now transformed into swirling runes, shot back towards Kei Y, this time far more powerful than it had been when it was first summoned. The force slammed into him with brutal force, sending Kei Y hurtling back, his body wracked with pain as third-degree burns spread across his skin in searing waves.

Kei Y screamed in agony, the intense heat of the strike far beyond what his body could withstand. His skin began to char, blackened in places and raw, while the rest of his body felt like it was on the verge of collapse.

But Kei Y didn’t falter. Quick to respond, he flicked his wrist, and healing rune strokes began flashing across his body. His burns receded almost instantly as the healing runes worked their magic, his skin regenerating with unsettling precision. The intense pain lingered only for a moment before being replaced with the strange comfort of healing, but the experience had taken its toll.

Aterix stood silently, watching with something akin to curiosity, as Kei Y’s body shifted between damaged and renewed skin. There was no sign of panic in Aterix’s expression, just a quiet observation. His tone, however, was lecturing.

“You know those eyes of yours aren’t just for decoration?” Aterix remarked, breaking the silence.

Kei Y, his body healing, took a moment to catch his breath. His pupils had morphed, shifting and changing in ways that were impossible to ignore. As his eyes focused, a strange and intricate pattern emerged in the delicate pieces of his irises—like a puzzle rearranging itself. There were thousands and thousands of tiny segments that seemed to fold and refold, crafting stunning new shapes in what looked almost like a kaleidoscope.

The colors in Kei Y's eyes were vivid and dynamic, like a living kaleidoscope, each hue swirling and shifting with perfect harmony. A blinding, pure white dominated the center, radiating with an almost divine intensity, while an electric, radiant yellow flickered around the edges, sharp and vibrant. The swirling greens of gales mixed with the violent verdant hue of lightning, creating a clash of energy that danced through his pupils. Smoky reds flickered like embers in a fire, pulsing with heat, while the ebb and flow of light and shadow seemed to manifest in the cracks between the other colors, creating a mesmerizing, fluid movement within his gaze.

Cool icy blues contrasted all the other hues, their icy chill acting as a grounding element amidst the chaos of fire and storm. A formless opaque mist swirled around the colors, binding them together, weaving the shifting hues into a unified, almost ethereal matrix. This backdrop of swirling opacity connected every shifting color in Kei Y's irises, making his eyes a constant, evolving display of power—a beautiful yet chaotic reflection of his control over the forces he was channeling.

Each time he moved or focused, the colors in his eyes responded, breaking apart into smaller puzzle-like fragments before reassembling into new patterns, enhancing his ability to manipulate the forces around him with increasing precision and intensity. The patterns were no longer simply beautiful—they were his weapon, a constantly evolving tool of mastery that he could call upon at will.

Kei Y's intricate eyes locked onto Aterix as he quickly prepared his wind runes, leaping backwards. The runes formed into sharp wind blades, their edges so fine and sharp that their ability to slice through the air only enhanced the speed with which they traveled. They rushed forward, closing the distance between Kei Y and Aterix in the blink of an eye.

However, just as Kei Y’s attack reached its target, he watched as Aterix, with a subtle motion, began deconstructing the wind runes Kei Y had created. In an instant, Aterix took control of them, breaking down the wind blades into basic wind rune strokes and redirecting them at Kei Y. Aterix, with an almost effortless grace, summoned a powerful gale that surged toward Kei Y.

The violent rush of wind hit Kei Y with full force, pushing him back despite his best efforts to brace himself. Streaks of cutting wind sliced into his skin, leaving shallow yet stinging gashes. Kei Y, still reeling from the impact, felt a sense of surprise. He had always been able to steal control of wind from his opponents, no matter their strength or prowess. Yet here, despite the familiar feeling of the wind swirling around him, he couldn't take hold of Aterix's control. Even though his skills had allowed him to steal powers from opponents much stronger than himself, Aterix's command over the wind felt like something he couldn’t breach.

Confusion flashed in Kei Y's eyes as he adjusted his stance, his mind racing. Why hadn’t he been able to steal the wind from Aterix? What was different about this fight?

With too much to think about, Kei Y folded into the wind and disappeared from the gust of wind

“So what do you think?” Aterix asked, as he watched Kei Y’s ragged breathing. “You’re using so many rune strokes, and yet I’m able to steal your command over them. Must be frustrating,” he said, clearly enjoying the upper hand.

Kei Y, bent over with his hands on his knees, barely managed to catch his breath. He was still recovering from the last exchange, sweat beading down his face. But then, something shifted in him. His labored breathing suddenly turned into frantic laughter.

“… this boy’s a lunatic,” Aterix muttered to himself under his breath, clearly surprised by Kei Y’s outburst. His confusion deepened as he watched Kei Y laugh hysterically, his eyes wide with that strange, almost manic excitement, a realization hit him like a wave.

“Makes sense… that Water Princess would be his master. They’re both insane,” Aterix thought privately, shaking his head in disbelief.

“You okay there?” Aterix asked, a touch of concern creeping into his voice as he observed Kei Y’s erratic behavior. His tone was still calm, but now there was a small hint of worry. He hadn’t expected his opponent to be this unhinged.

Kei Y, still trying to catch his breath through his laughter, managed to calm himself down just a little. He wiped tears of amusement from his eyes, grinning widely. “I’m good, I’m good,” he said, his voice still trembling with the aftershocks of laughter. “You know, it just clicked in my head, that’s all.”

Aterix raised an eyebrow, his concern growing slightly as Kei Y’s laughter subsided. “What clicked?” he asked, trying to piece together what was happening.

Kei Y wiped away the tears from his eyes, his laughter slowly dying down as his mind settled into clarity. He looked up at Aterix, still catching his breath from the chaotic, almost manic episode. "I just realized something, that's all," Kei Y said, his voice slightly more composed, though the excitement still lingered. "Runes... they're not so different from computer programming. It's like coding, but instead of writing lines of code on a screen, you're drawing runes to create programs that control the world around you."

Aterix, still slightly confused by Kei Y's outburst, stared at him for a long moment. "What... is computer programming? What's coding?" he asked, genuinely perplexed, not understanding the reference at all.

Kei Y let out a breath, shaking his head as he realized the gap in knowledge between him and Aterix. "Never mind," he muttered to himself, before letting out a short, almost defeated laugh. "Alright, forget that for now. Let me explain what I mean in a way that makes sense here."

Kei Y inhaled slowly, letting the runes orbiting him settle into a clear pattern.

“Runes aren’t symbols,” he said firmly. “They’re statements. Each one defines a condition: produce heat, redirect force, alter density… whatever its base concept is.”

He guided a rune into alignment with another, letting them click into place like gears.

“When two runes connect, they don’t add power. They modify each other. One sets the rule. The next sets the context. The third determines the output.”

He pointed toward Aterix’s formations.

“The difference between a novice and a master isn’t energy or talent. It’s syntax. The order determines whether the structure amplifies or cancels itself.”

A third rune slid in, stabilizing the flow instantly. Kei nodded to himself.

“If I change the position of one rune, the entire instruction set behaves differently. It’s like building a function—every piece must support the next or the process breaks.”

His eyes narrowed as he mirrored one of Aterix’s patterns, then deliberately shifted a single rune by a fraction.

“And if I understand why a pattern works… I don’t have to copy it. I can improve it.”

For the first time, his runes rotated with total stability, not from power but from clean structure.

“Efficiency isn’t optional. It’s the real power. A perfect formation wastes nothing.”

Kei looked up, gaze steady and analytical.

“You weren’t beating me because your force was overwhelming. You were beating me because your runes were correct.”

Kei Y explanation earned a slight clap from Aterix “Talented you are, and if I were to rank you among recruit class runesmiths, based on your newfound understanding, I’d be comfortable to put you within the top 10,000 recruit class runesmiths but granted your background seems to be rather limited I can admire you taking an appropriate step into runes”

Aterix paused, his gaze narrowing slightly as he studied Kei Y. He noticed something odd: despite Kei Y being told about his rank in the galaxy, despite the weight of Aterix's words, the excited smile on Kei Y's face never faltered. He was still grinning, even as the intricate patterns in his pupils kept shifting and reforming.

"We all start at the bottom, but I’ve always risen to the top," Kei Y said with unwavering confidence, still breathing heavily and wincing from the pain in his body. "I’ll get there with runes soon. That I can promise."

His voice, still filled with that infectious enthusiasm, cut through the air, leaving Aterix speechless for a moment. The zone boss watched, both baffled and impressed, as Kei Y continued to grin, his determination unwavering despite the pain.

Kei Y jumped into the air, as the swirling green of gales in his irises broke apart into thousands of tiny puzzle-like pieces. Each piece was a distinct rune stroke, each part of a larger puzzle, moving and shifting with an intricate pattern. The wind rune strokes he had drawn mirrored the same complex patterns, forming dozens of wind-based sebon, sharp needles of wind that shot toward Aterix with deadly speed.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Aterix stood calmly, observing the incoming attack, his eyes narrowing as he studied Kei Y’s rune strokes. With a subtle wave of his hand, Aterix began breaking down the runes Kei Y had made, as he took command of them.

“That's better," Aterix said, a hint of approval in his voice, but it was quickly followed by a more commanding tone. "But since Auserre intended for me to be your teacher…” He smiled with an almost predatory grin. “Let me show you what true genius in runesmithing looks like.”

As Aterix spoke, Kei Y’s wind rune strokes, now under Aterix's control, swirled around him in an elegant dance, their movements smooth and graceful. But they were no longer the same; they had transformed. The runes were stronger, more dynamic, as if they were alive, pulsing with a will of their own. Where Kei Y’s wind strokes had been sharp and raw, these now danced with a controlled ferocity, their energy almost tangible in the air.

Kei Y’s eyes, the intricate patterns in his irises, continued to break down, shifting and rearranging like the pieces of a complex, ever-changing rune puzzle. The patterns within his gaze, like a kaleidoscope, reflected the forces he was manipulating, the sheer volume of power building within him.

As Aterix manipulated the wind runes, Kei Y, despite being pushed back, felt something stir within him. The complexity of his own vision and connection to the runic world was beginning to click, but it was not yet enough to fully compete with the power Aterix commanded.

Auserre and the vendor stood in stunned silence, watching the water mirror with a mix of confusion and disbelief. The scene unfolding in front of them was unlike anything they had expected. The vendor broke the silence first, his voice tinged with surprise.

“I thought you said…” The vendor started, his words trailing off, unable to finish his thought as he gestured toward the mirror.

Auserre sighed, her arms crossed as she gazed at the mirror, her usual composure shaken. “I know….”

The vendor raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical. “But I could have sworn you were certain that…”

“I know, I know,” Auserre muttered, her voice exasperated. She looked at the image of Kei Y and Aterix in the mirror, trying to make sense of the situation herself. “I never expected this.”

“Then why am I seeing this?” the vendor asked, clearly perplexed by the unfolding events.

“I don’t know,” Auserre replied, equally confused. “This is… unexpected.”

During their moment of confusion, a figure in plain robes appeared and dropped a cloth bag onto a table next to them. The figure observed Auserre and the vendor’s confusion, noting the attention they were paying to the water mirror that displayed Kei Y and Aterix.

In the water mirror, Aterix could be seen teaching Kei Y the fundamentals of runes, guiding him through the process of being a runesmith. The image showed Aterix taking control of Kei Y’s runic attack, breaking it down into its fundamental components. As the attack was deconstructed, the runic strokes were shifted around, and Aterix, with his vast understanding, used fewer runes, structuring them in a layered, complex manner. The result was a much more powerful attack than what Kei Y had originally unleashed. Despite Aterix’s measured approach, there was a noticeable difference in how the power manifested—the complexity of the strokes had given the returned attack a much greater impact than the initial one.

Kei Y, determined and focused, took the returned attack head-on, not flinching, as he absorbed the lesson and adapted to it. He didn’t hold back, even as Aterix’s version of the attack tore through the air with greater force. His pupils shimmered, signaling the deep understanding he was gaining from Aterix’s guidance.

All of this reflected on the water mirrors as the three figures watched the encounter

“Is that the Kaleidoscope Runic ocular skill? There’s someone who was able to acquire that skill?” the robed figure asked, his voice filled with surprise.

“You do realize your current behavior is really unbecoming as a king of a kingdom,” Auserre shot back.

“Don’t change the subject, Aus—” The King was about to finish his sentence, but he was abruptly cut off. The impact reverberated through the room as the King was sent flying into the wall, courtesy of a powerful kick from Auserre.

“I swear that guy is getting bolder these days,” the vendor muttered, his gaze never leaving the water mirror where Kei Y was still training with Aterix. “But he is right, though. Even if he is what he is, how did that kid manage to acquire that ocular skill?”

Auserre sighed, crossing her arms as she looked at the scene unfolding in the mirror. “I don’t know, somehow he was able to find all the treasure I’d hidden in the maze. The others went through their zones, unable to find anything. Well, Mia and Inpu found some stuff, but they are who they are, so I don’t count that. Even then, to acquire that ocular skill is beyond lucky... the little bastard,” she said, her frustration clear despite the pride she felt for her student.

The vendor, still watching with rapt attention, nodded thoughtfully. “That skill... it’s no joke. It’s one of the most difficult abilities to obtain, and for him to have it so early on... it’s almost as if he’s tapping into something beyond just the system’s regular progression.”

Auserre’s eyes narrowed as she watched Kei Y, his eyes shifting between different force alignments, breaking down their core components with his Kaleidoscope Runes. “He’s still a mystery to me. His potential... it’s like he’s learning faster than he should be. But then again, maybe that’s just the way of the G……” Auserre began to say, but she was suddenly cut off.

Before she could finish her thought, Auserre, caught off guard, found herself tackled to the ground by none other than the King.

“What are you—!” she exclaimed, only to be cut off again as the King wrestled her into a strange grapple, causing them to tumble in an odd and chaotic display.

Meanwhile, the vendor, seemingly uninterested in the two bickering, remained focused on the mirror displaying Kei Y's actions. His eyes scanned the intricate patterns in Kei Y's irises as the young man effortlessly shifted between force alignments, each new layer of power more captivating than the last.

"Hmmm, I can see Wind Force, Thunder Force," the vendor murmured to himself, adjusting his position slightly to better observe the shifting colors. "Is that a mixture of Wind and Thunder Force? That black and white seems like Shadow and Light Force, but the way it moves... it’s more complicated, more intricate. And there’s the Fire Force he's using, too. That blue... might be Frost Force. How many force alignments does this kid know?"

The vendor was so absorbed in Kei Y’s abilities that he barely noticed the cloth bag the King had dropped earlier. He glanced down at it, his brow furrowing slightly as he noticed something that seemed a bit... off.

“Is there a head in there?” the vendor asked aloud, his voice oddly casual, as he peered at the bag with some curiosity. His attention flickered back to the mirror, but the bizarre question hung in the air.

Finally managing to push Auserre off him, the King took a deep breath and began speaking. "I was notified earlier that that psycho presence was felt in a few guarded fractured zones. Considering the locations of the zones and the presence tied to the talismans, I figured that crazy lady must've gotten new students. But one in particular stood out. I came to learn that one of them was flagged as odd..." He trailed off, clearly reluctant to continue, his voice quieting.

The King shifted uncomfortably. "I came to learn that the specialist class stationed at the zone disregarded the talisman and chose to try and apprehend the kid who presented it. So, I executed him and brought his head here, hoping she wouldn't flood the kingdom again," he explained.

"I didn’t want any problems to happen due to his ignorance, I hope you can look past this...prin... I mean, Auserre," the King said, his voice softer now. His eyes flickered toward the bag he had dropped earlier, unsure of how the story was going to unfold.

Auserre, with her hair still blowing slightly from the force of the brief tussle, stood, her presence still as commanding as ever. The scar on her lip added a ruggedness to her features, a mark of her battle-hardened journey since those early days. She didn't speak right away, her eyes narrowed as she stared at the King.

"I only flooded your kingdom one time," Auserre shot back, huffing at the King.

The vendor, watching the exchange unfold, couldn’t help but comment on the situation. "Whatever the kid did, he was quite mean. Took the guy's eyes out."

As the King looked at Auserre, the coldness of her exterior softened for just a moment. In that fleeting instant, he saw traces of the young princess she once was. The child he had once known, who had captivated everyone in Atlantis with her impossible beauty, despite her youth. He remembered how, at just five years old, she had carried herself with such innocence, her blue eyes as deep and mysterious as the ocean she was born from.

Auserre Aqualis, the princess of Atlantis, was no longer just a girl in a frilly blue dress. She was now something far more formidable, hardened by experiences that had left their marks on her. The same woman who saved his life when they were both kids.

Looking at the water mirror, the King observed Aterix lecturing the young kid he still didn’t recognize, Aterix teaching him about runes through the heat of combat. The kid stood suspended mid-air, surrounded by swirling wind rune strokes, the ethereal cyan-green glow of his body accentuating the rune strokes as they danced from his eyes, breaking apart in a beautiful, almost mesmerizing display. The sight was awe-inspiring.

“Impressive kid,” the King said. “Seems worthy of being your student.”

Kei Y stood mid-air, his body weightless as the runes swirled around him, glowing with an almost supernatural light. He let out a playful “Hehe,” a quiet giggle escaping his lips as he basked in the power of the rune strokes.

Aterix, watching with a mix of admiration and disbelief, raised an eyebrow. “Impressive. You managed to breathe life into your rune strokes so quickly... I thought it would take you a few days to get to this point.” He couldn't hide the surprise in his voice.

Kei Y smiled back, His kaleidoscope eyes presence clear and astounding for all to witness, clearly enjoying the progress. “I did tell you I’m a fast learner.”

With a subtle wave of his hand, the wind rune strokes fluttered to life around him once more, his skill activating with a powerful surge. Shinma Edgecraft: Stormpiercer Ascendant. The air around Kei Y hummed with a low vibration as his body became immersed in the swirling runes, the wind growing stronger and sharper. From the swirling chaos above, a small bird formed, crafted from a perfect blend of wind and frost rune strokes. The bird fluttered gently in the air, its cold touch a harmonious mix of forces, before it softly landed on Kei Y's head, pecking lightly at his hair.

As the bird perched, a cascade of Sakura blossoms began to form around him. The blossoms drifted down in slow, delicate spirals, each one materializing from a fusion of wind and frost rune strokes, echoing the Lotus Bloom skill. The petals shimmered with an ethereal glow, each one quietly registering as a projectile-skill fusion by the system.

It was a Shinma Enaga, an intricate manifestation of Kei Y's newly refined runesmith mastery. The bird above him symbolized his mastery over the fusion of elemental forces, while the Sakura petals created a beautiful yet deadly aura around him, signaling the synergy between his control over wind, and frost forces. Each petal represented both a graceful, serene image and a deadly potential, ready to be unleashed at Kei Y's command.

Aterix, watching from below, couldn't help but nod in approval, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes. The kid had come far, far quicker than he had anticipated.

With his Kaleidoscope eyes, Kei Y looked at his status screen to observe the ocular skill he had received from completing the zone.

By analyzing the patterns and components of the forces you've interacted with, your eyes allow you to access these alignments more freely and efficiently in combat or other applications.

    Effect:

Your eyes transform force alignments you are familiar with into a visual, runic form, deconstructing them like a puzzle. When activated, your eyes break down the force's core runic structure—its fundamental components—allowing you to manipulate, apply, or enhance that force more precisely. Each force alignment you've learned (e.g., Wind Force, Storm Force, Frost Force) is mapped into a "runic matrix" you can call upon as needed. The more familiar you are with a force, the faster and more effectively you can call on its runic power.

    Flavor Text:

From up close, the forces in your irises break apart into tiny puzzle pieces, constantly shifting and rearranging when activated. From afar, the different colors representing each force merge into a dazzling kaleidoscopic display—an awe-inspiring sight for observers, but a daunting spectacle for enemies caught in its wake.
