Chapter 596 : The Frugal Ling Ning
“Mom, who was that man just now?”
Once inside Wu Zi’s car, Bai Yiyue wasted no time shedding her disguise and immediately asked her mother.
Before Bai Jie could answer, Ling Ning interjected, “Oh, that? He’s one of your mom’s suitors.”
Hearing this, Bai Yiyue’s expression instantly sharpened. “No way! Just from the look in his eyes, he seems like a scumbag. And his way of speaking is so annoying. Mom, you wouldn’t seriously…”
Bai Jie shot her daughter a glare. “Do you think your mom has such terrible taste?”
“Of course not!”
“Then there’s nothing to worry about. Let’s drop the subject—just thinking about him ruins my mood. By the way, why are you driving my car today?” Bai Jie asked curiously.
She had been surprised to see her own car earlier.
“The usual car was sent for maintenance, and the young miss insisted on picking you up. We couldn’t find another vehicle on short notice, so I used this one,” Wu Zi explained.
Bai Jie nodded lightly. That made sense. At least now Teacher Gao might stop showing off his car in front of her.
“By the way, Mom, did you see his expression just now? It was like he’d swallowed something bitter. I almost laughed out loud,” Bai Yiyue said gleefully, clearly referring to Teacher Gao.
Bai Jie chuckled softly but didn’t comment further.
As Bai Yiyue and Ling Ning began discussing details about an upcoming concert, Bai Jie suddenly spoke up. “Wu Zi, stop at the next intersection. I need to buy some groceries. Oh, and you should stay for dinner tonight.”
“Thank you, but I have work later, so…”
“I see. Thank you for all your help.”
“It’s no trouble.”
“I’ll come along too,” Ling Ning offered. Although she was close to Bai Jie, she still felt a bit awkward about freeloading a meal. Helping with grocery shopping seemed like a good idea.
Bai Jie smiled. “There’s no need. It’s just the three of us. I can carry everything myself.”
“It’s fine! Having an extra set of hands makes things easier, doesn’t it? Besides, I noticed last night while cooking for Yiyue that some seasonings are running low. I’ll come along.”
“Well… alright then.”
Watching their interaction, Bai Yiyue blinked thoughtfully. Just as she was about to volunteer to join, Wu Zi, who was driving, spoke up. “Young Miss, you shouldn’t go. Also, I heard you had a late-night snack last night?”
Bai Yiyue’s face froze. She instinctively turned to look at Ling Ning, whose innocent expression betrayed no guilt. Yiyue felt thoroughly betrayed.
“There was a reason for the midnight snack!”
“No excuses. After the concert, I expect you to report to Xiao An.”
“No! I don’t want to see Xiao An!”
Xiao An was Bai Yiyue’s fitness coach, responsible for her figure. Despite her delicate appearance, she was exceptionally strict. Every training session under her was like torture for Bai Yiyue.
As the two bantered, the car stopped. Watching her mother and Ling Ning walk away together, Bai Yiyue felt a profound sense of abandonment.
Sensing her gaze, Ling Ning hesitated briefly before turning back. Meeting Bai Yiyue’s hopeful eyes, Ling Ning gave her a helpless look.
Her obsessive childhood friend was so amusing when thwarted. Like a little puppy, it stirred an irresistible urge to tease her further.
Adjusting her expression, Ling Ning caught up with Bai Jie and said, “Sister, let’s go.”
“Alright.”
The two walked leisurely along the street, taking their time since it was still early. Upon reaching the supermarket, Bai Jie headed to the household goods section, mulling over her purchases.
“I don’t often come to the supermarket, so I tend to stock up on everything I need. Since you’re here, Ling Ning, you can help me carry some things, right?” Bai Jie said with a smile.
“Of course! I’m the same way.”
Although neither frequented supermarkets often, their approaches differed. Ling Ning only shopped during sales, while Bai Jie came whenever she had time, indifferent to discounts.
“What do you think of this brand of tissues?”
“They’re good, but I recommend this one. It’s cheaper, more plentiful, and comes with free gifts.”
“And this? What do you usually use?”
“This brand. It’s really good.”
After loading up on various items, the two pushed a fully loaded cart to the checkout line.
Seemingly struck by a thought, Bai Jie asked, “Ling Ning, you’re really knowledgeable about these things. I bet you’ll make an excellent housewife someday.”
“Oh, not at all… It’s way too early to think about things like that,” Ling Ning said, embarrassed.
“Is that so?” Bai Jie smiled knowingly but didn’t press further.
After checking out, they left the supermarket. Though the bags were relatively light individually, combined, they felt oppressively heavy to Ling Ning.
Fortunately, Bai Jie’s house wasn’t far. With a bit of perseverance, they would arrive soon.
Watching Ling Ning walk ahead, Bai Jie smiled softly. Frugal, attentive, and thoughtful—there wasn’t a single fault she could find in her.
