Chapter 452 : Breaking All the Rules!
“I added some sugar to the congee; it should taste pretty good.”
Ling Ning said with a cheerful smile as she looked at Bai Jie. From her overly affectionate childhood friend, she had learned that Bai Jie had a preference for sweet things. So, Ling Ning had deliberately added a little sugar to the congee. Judging by the results, it seemed to have worked quite well.
“Mm.”
Bai Jie nodded slightly. Even though she didn’t have much of an appetite, after tasting Ling Ning’s congee, she found herself wanting another bite.
Without saying much, Ling Ning scooped up another spoonful, blew on it gently, and brought it to Bai Jie’s lips. After Bai Jie ate the spoonful, Ling Ning repeated the process.
Before long, the bowl of congee was empty.
“Would you like some more?”
Bai Jie shook her head. “This is enough.”
“I see. Then I’ll finish off the rest myself.”
As she watched Ling Ning’s retreating figure, Bai Jie lay back down on the bed. Though her head still felt heavy, she couldn’t shake the strange feeling of being unable to fall asleep.
After some time had passed, Ling Ning returned to the room with a glass of water. Seeing that Bai Jie was still awake, she looked surprised.
“What’s wrong? Can’t sleep?”
“Mm, I don’t know why, but I just feel like I don’t want to sleep.”
“Try closing your eyes and calming your mind?”
“I’ll give it a try.”
As Bai Jie closed her eyes, Ling Ning began to hum a soft, unfamiliar melody. It was a song she often hummed to help Ling Ye fall asleep when she couldn’t. Though Ling Ning couldn’t remember the name of the song, it was something she’d come across by chance in her previous life. She could only recall bits and pieces of the tune.
Perhaps the song had a soothing effect because not long after, Bai Jie’s breathing evened out, and her previously furrowed brow relaxed.
Looking at Bai Jie’s sleeping face, Ling Ning let out a long sigh. She had only intended to go out for breakfast, yet she had ended up in this situation. Still, given Bai Jie’s state, Ling Ning was glad she had been there. If Bai Jie had gone out to buy medicine on her own, it would’ve been worrisome.
Come to think of it, Bai Jie looked incredibly young. She didn’t seem to show any visible signs of aging. If she and Bai Yiyue went out together, people might even believe they were sisters. Ling Ning suddenly felt the urge to ask Bai Jie about her skincare routine. Wait—when did she start caring about things like that!?
Shaking her head to dispel such impractical thoughts, Ling Ning glanced around the room. Though she’d been to Bai Jie’s house many times, this was her first time in Bai Jie’s bedroom. She couldn’t help but feel a little curious.
As Bai Yiyue had mentioned, there wasn’t a single trace of her father in the room. Not even a photograph. Everything was just of Bai Jie and her daughter.
After scanning the room, Ling Ning lost interest and casually picked up her phone to play a game. However, after a short while, her eyelids started to droop.
Unable to fight off sleepiness any longer, Ling Ning placed her phone on the bedside table and leaned back in the chair, falling asleep almost instantly.

“Ah, so hot!”
Ling Ning woke up, feeling stifled. Because Bai Jie was sick, the air conditioning hadn’t been turned on in the room. The oppressive heat had woken Ling Ning from her dream.
Her sweat-soaked clothes clung tightly to her body, making her feel uncomfortable. Sighing helplessly, Ling Ning got up and walked to the living room, turning on the air conditioner. Knowing it would take some time to cool down, she stepped out onto the balcony instead.
Although the breeze was warm, it was better than sitting in a stifling living room. She didn’t dare stand directly in front of the air conditioner; doing so would likely land her in bed tomorrow.
The breeze today was quite strong, offering a hint of comfort.
Suddenly, something fell onto Ling Ning’s head. She instinctively reached up and grabbed it. To her surprise, it was a pair of purple lace panties, likely blown down by the wind.
But still... she didn’t expect Bai Jie to wear such bold underwear.
Just as Ling Ning was about to hang them back up, a voice interrupted her.
“What... what are you doing!?”
Bai Jie stared in disbelief at Ling Ning, who was holding her panties. After waking up, Bai Jie had felt the need to use the bathroom. Upon stepping out of her room, she saw Ling Ning standing on the balcony. Initially, she had planned to thank her, but instead, she found Ling Ning holding her panties. What was she doing!?
“Eh!?” Ling Ning blinked, looking between the panties in her hand and Bai Jie. Realizing the misunderstanding, she hurriedly said, “Sister, let me explain.”
“Go on.”
“Well, the wind blew your laundry down just now, and I was about to hang it back up. It’s not what you think!”
As Ling Ning spoke, a matching bra of the same color fell down and landed neatly on her head, adding an air of awkward comedy to the situation.

Seeing this, Bai Jie realized she might have misunderstood Ling Ning. Chuckling awkwardly, she walked over, took the undergarments from Ling Ning, and began collecting the rest of her laundry from the balcony.
The sun was so strong today that everything had already dried.
“Feeling better after your nap?”
“Mm, much better.”
Bai Jie replied, nodding slightly. She was worlds better compared to the morning when she had nearly fainted, though her head still felt a little fuzzy. The stickiness of sweat on her body was also uncomfortable.
“That’s good. You have no idea how pale you looked this morning. Are you hungry now? Should I make you something?” Ling Ning asked with concern.
“No, I’m not hungry yet. I’ll go change clothes first.”
“Oh.” Ling Ning responded and casually turned off the air conditioner she’d just turned on.
Before long, Bai Jie returned, now dressed in a simple nightgown.
“Thank you so much for today.”
“It’s... it’s nothing. But Sister, you should get plenty of rest. And if you take a bath tonight, make sure to use hot water and dry your hair immediately!” Ling Ning hesitated before adding nervously, “I’ll come by tomorrow to check on you.”
Hearing this, Bai Jie’s face lit up with a radiant smile. “Alright.”
“Eh!?”
Ling Ning blinked in confusion. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Wasn’t Bai Jie supposed to say, “No need”? Why did it turn out like this!?
