“That was a close call. We almost got splashed.”
Ling Ning and Li Qian strolled leisurely down the street. After the chaotic events earlier, most of their classmates had opted out of karaoke, giving the two an excuse to leave as well.
“I suspect Sun Ting was planning to spill that wine on us,” Li Qian said nonchalantly. “If she hadn’t twisted her ankle, we’d probably be the soaked ones right now.”
“Huh?”
“You didn’t notice? Sun Ting was holding a glass filled to the brim with wine when she came over. Nobody pours their glass that full unless they’re up to something.”
“Really?”
Ling Ning blinked in surprise. At the time, she’d been too focused on whispering with Li Qian to pay attention to Sun Ting’s actions.
“Don’t overthink it,” Li Qian said with a sigh. “By the way, summer vacation’s almost over. It’ll be back to school soon.”
Li Qian couldn’t believe how quickly the break had flown by. It felt like the college entrance exams had happened just yesterday. Why did happy times always seem so fleeting?
Still, the thought of attending the same university as Ling Ning made her happy. If only her little sister weren’t tagging along—it’d be even better.
At the mention of school, Ling Ning clamped her hands over her ears and stared blankly at Li Qian. “B***h, what are you talking about? I can’t hear anything. Isn’t summer vacation just starting?”
Li Qian grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her vigorously. “Ling Ning, stop running from reality!”
“Why? Why does it have to end like this? It’s the first time I’ve had such a long vacation, with so much free time. Two joys combined...”
“Shut up, or I’ll hit you!” Li Qian said with a deadpan expression. She couldn’t understand how Ling Ning could act so dramatic with such ease. Was it because she’d been reading Dream of the Red Chamber? Didn’t she realize that behaving this way might get her punched—or worse, turned into a “hot weapon,” like that one ridiculous sea creature?
“Sigh~”
Ling Ning let out a resigned sigh. Summer break ending meant she’d have to return to campus life. Worse, there’d likely be military training—a nightmare waiting to happen.
But at least college life wouldn’t be as demanding as high school, and it shouldn’t interfere too much with her work.
“For now, let’s just enjoy the break. Got any plans for the afternoon? If not, I’m heading home to sleep... yawn~”
Before she could finish, a massive yawn escaped her. Staying up late the previous night and waking up early had taken a toll on her.
“Sleep? Are you seriously planning to waste precious vacation time sleeping?” Li Qian asked incredulously.
Before Ling Ning could reply, Li Qian grabbed her hand and started walking. There was no way she’d let this chance to spend time with Ling Ning slip away.

In a jewelry store, Ling Ning curiously glanced around. She hadn’t expected Li Qian to bring her to such a place—it was her first time here.
Accessories had never interested her much. While she had pierced ears, it was only for work, and she rarely wore anything other than the bracelet her daughter had given her.
Most of her current jewelry had been gifted by Qin Qing, supposedly to match her outfits. But judging by their quality, they all seemed way too expensive.
Noticing that Ling Ning had been following her closely without browsing, Li Qian turned and asked, “Why aren’t you looking around? Don’t you like jewelry?”
“Not really. I rarely wear this stuff.”
“Oh...”
Li Qian blinked. Now that she thought about it, she’d never seen Ling Ning wear much jewelry—apart from the small bracelet. Today’s earrings and necklace were a first.
Eyeing Ling Ning’s intricate earrings, Li Qian asked, “Are those earrings pierced or clip-ons?”
“Pierced,” Ling Ning replied, her expression turning odd. Thinking back to the day she got her ears pierced made her feel helpless. If it weren’t for the need to earn money, she’d never have done it. To make matters worse, Qin Qing had casually informed her afterward that clip-on earrings existed.
How infuriating!
“That’s impressive. I’ve always used clip-ons—not because I’m scared or anything, but because piercing feels like too much trouble,” Li Qian said defensively, avoiding Ling Ning’s pointed gaze.
“Oh, really? Well, since we have time today, I can go with you to get them pierced,” Ling Ning said flatly.
Panicking, Li Qian quickly pointed at a necklace in the display case. “N-No need! Hey, what do you think of this necklace?”
The shop assistant smiled and explained, “This is a couple’s necklace set.”
Li Qian’s expression froze. Why do I always end up pointing at couple’s items?
Ling Ning smiled mischievously, wrapping her arms around Li Qian’s shoulders from behind and resting her chin on her. In a sultry voice, she whispered, “Oh? Is b***h planning to buy me a necklace?”
Feeling the warmth of Ling Ning pressed against her, Li Qian’s face turned bright red. “Y-You little brat, let me go! There’s no way I’m buying you anything!”
“I won’t let go! If you don’t buy me a necklace, I’m staying right here~”
The shop assistant, watching the scene unfold, was utterly exasperated. If you’re going to buy something, buy it. If not, stop flirting in the store! Don’t you have any decency?
“I, Li Qian, would rather die than buy you a necklace!”
