Chapter 239 : What to Do When Your Daughter Gets Confessed To!
Just as Ling Ning was leaving Bai Yiyue’s neighborhood and heading to pick up her daughter, she spotted a very familiar figure. Walking closer, she realized it was Li Si.
Because of the recent college entrance exams and the constant presence of Li Si’s “little shadow,” Zheng Yun, the two of them hadn’t seen each other in a while. So running into Li Si here today took Ling Ning by surprise.
Li Si, who had been aimlessly wandering the streets, turned around when she heard someone call her name and found Ling Ning standing right behind her.
“L-Ling Ning, what a coincidence,” Li Si stammered. For some reason, every time she saw Ling Ning, her heart would start racing, and she’d struggle to find the right words.
“Yeah, I was just on my way to pick up my little sister from school. Didn’t expect to run into you here. By the way, how did your exams go?” Ling Ning asked.
Li Si gave a wry smile. “Oh, it went… okay, I guess~”
Her grades weren’t great to begin with. Although she had been studying hard, her foundation was weak. Even with Zheng Yun tutoring her one-on-one every day, she figured she’d be lucky to get into a second-tier university, let alone an elite one like S University.
“Oh! Speaking of which, where’s your ‘little shadow’? I don’t see her anywhere.” Ling Ning glanced around curiously, surprised not to see Zheng Yun nearby. If this were any other time, Zheng Yun would have appeared by now, hovering protectively.
“She… she’s been dragged off by her dad on a forced family trip,” Li Si explained with a laugh, recalling how Zheng Yun’s father had carried her to the car the other day. Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought he was kidnapping her.
Though her “shadow” was away, Li Si found herself feeling unexpectedly lonely. She’d grown used to having Zheng Yun by her side, so it felt strange not having her around.
“Oh, I see~”
Li Si hesitated, then glanced at Ling Ning, a bit embarrassed. “Um… Ling Ning, I’ve actually been thinking about finding a part-time job lately. Do you know of any places that might be hiring…?”
She was facing a tough problem: college tuition. Her older brother, Zhang San, had just landed a job as a security guard, but his salary only covered their basic expenses. She didn’t want to add to his burden, so she’d decided to use her break to find a job.
It was only the first day after the exams, and she’d been searching all morning without success. Just when she was about to head home, she’d run into Ling Ning by chance.
“A job, huh…” Ling Ning thought for a moment before pulling out her phone and dialing Chu Mengyao’s number.
“Hey, Ling Ning? What’s up?”
“I wanted to ask if the café needs any extra help,” Ling Ning replied.
Chu Mengyao was silent for a moment. With business at the café growing, she’d been thinking about hiring additional staff since everyone except Jiang Xue was only available part-time. Ling Ning’s call was perfectly timed.
“Yeah, actually. But what’s the candidate’s ‘quality’ like?”
“Quality?” Ling Ning glanced at Li Si, who was standing awkwardly beside her, and answered with confidence. “Top-notch, I promise you won’t be disappointed~ She’s a hard worker, too.”
Feeling Ling Ning’s scrutinizing gaze, Li Si suddenly felt like she was on one of those old TV dramas where the madam appraises new recruits. She couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom.
“Alright, then. Bring her in tomorrow morning. If everything checks out, she can start right away!”
“Will do~”
Ling Ning hung up and turned to Li Si. “Alright, be at the corner where we usually split paths tomorrow at eight sharp.”
“Th-thank you! Um… can I ask what kind of job it is?” Li Si asked cautiously.
Ling Ning flashed a mysterious smile. “Oh, you’ll find out tomorrow. It’s usually pretty relaxed, but things can get busy, and you’ll have to think on your feet to deal with all kinds of customers.”
“Meow… meow meow?”
Relaxed, yet busy at times, handling customers—it left Li Si’s mind spinning.
“Oh, and remember to wear the outfit I gave you,” Ling Ning added with a grin before heading off to pick up her daughter, leaving Li Si standing there in a daze, caught off guard by the strange turn of events.
Now she was wondering if she should even show up tomorrow. But no, she had to go! If it turned out to be what she feared, she’d pull Ling Ning out of that “pit” herself!

When Ling Ning arrived at her daughter’s school, the students were already flooding out, with parents lined up at the gate waiting for their kids.
Ling Ning went to their usual meeting spot by the gate, but her daughter was nowhere in sight. Normally, if Ling Ning arrived early, she would wait there, and if she was running late, her daughter would wait there for her.
Scratching her head in confusion, Ling Ning decided to check inside the school. Just as she reached her daughter’s classroom door, she overheard something that made her freeze.
“Ling Ye, I’ve liked you for a long time. Will you go out with me?”
The voice sounded like a young boy’s. Hearing a boy confessing to her daughter filled Ling Ning with a mixture of tension and annoyance. She knew her daughter well enough to be sure she wouldn’t just agree to date anyone. Still, she couldn’t help but worry.
After a moment of thought, she snuck over to the window to peek inside the classroom.
Inside the empty classroom, she saw two figures. The boy who had just confessed was standing in front of Ling Ye, blushing and looking down. Ling Ye, meanwhile, was sitting on a desk, arms crossed, staring at the boy with an expression of utter impatience—looking every bit the delinquent.
Who is this brat, and why on earth would he think it’s okay to confess to my precious daughter? Ling Ning fumed silently. If I find out who you are, I’ll write a letter of complaint to your homeroom teacher!
