Chapter 140 : The Loli Housewife
Ling Ning had never attended one of her daughter's parent-teacher meetings before, so she wasn't familiar with how they went.
But that wasn't a problem. If she didn't know the procedure, there were always other people she could follow. With so many parents attending the meeting, she figured she'd just stick with one of them and follow along.
Ling Ning carefully observed her surroundings. It seemed like the men were either ogling her or the women were eyeing her warily. Some of those women she actually recognized, though they knew her as Ling Ye's "older sister." But today, she was here as Ling Ye's mother. From the friendly looks they gave her, it seemed talking to them would be rather awkward.
Just then, a small figure entered Ling Ning's line of sight. Judging by the youthful features on her face, this girl was probably just a few years older than Ling Ye. But from the way she was dressed, she gave off the vibe of a married woman.
At that moment, this loli-looking housewife was being stopped by the security guard at the entrance.
"Which class are you from? Don't you know classes have already started? And what's with those clothes? Even if there's no dress code, you can't dress like that. And those accessories—there's a strict rule against jewelry at school. Didn't your homeroom teacher mention that?"
The security guard was an elderly man, a decent fellow, but a bit rigid and verbose.
The loli housewife was puffing up in frustration, wanting to explain herself, but the security guard's mouth just wouldn't stop.
In the end, she had no choice but to pull out her ID from her bag and show it to him. Only after triple-checking the ID did the old security guard let her pass. As she walked away, Ling Ning overheard her muttering to herself, "I'm not even that Mrs. Scarlet from next door..."
After watching the loli housewife enter the school grounds, Ling Ning didn't hesitate. She followed her in. As she passed the security guard, she could hear him mumbling, "What's with young people these days? Or maybe it's just me getting old..."
The loli housewife wasn't walking too fast, so Ling Ning quickly caught up. However, instead of approaching her directly, she kept a bit of distance behind.
But as they kept walking, Ling Ning noticed something was off. This clearly wasn't the direction to the classroom building. Where was she going?
Just as Ling Ning was puzzled, she saw the loli housewife looking around, confused, occasionally pulling out her phone to check something. Ling Ning had a suspicion—no, she was certain—the girl was lost.
Apparently, the loli housewife also noticed Ling Ning, who was following a short distance behind. After some hesitation, she ran up to her and asked, "Um... excuse me, do you know where the parent-teacher meeting is being held?"
"I knew it," Ling Ning thought to herself, feeling slightly regretful. Why had she chosen to follow this girl in the first place? It seemed she too was susceptible to appearances.
Ling Ning shook her head helplessly and said, "Sorry, I'm looking for it too~"
"Oh!? You're here for the parent-teacher meeting as well? I thought you were a teacher, you look so young~" the loli housewife said, her eyes widening in surprise.
Ling Ning looked at the girl expressionlessly. Anyone else could say that, but hearing it from her somehow felt off.
"I think the meeting should be in the classroom building. Let's head there and check it out."
"Oh, oh," the loli housewife nodded, and then, as if she remembered something, said anxiously, "By the way, do you know where the classroom building is? I seem to be lost."
"Yes, I know where it is."
"That's great."
With that, the loli housewife prepared to continue walking, but Ling Ning, realizing what was happening, sighed and pulled her back gently. "The classroom building is this way. You're heading in the wrong direction."
"Huh!?"
The loli housewife blinked in confusion, her cheeks slowly turning pink. To Ling Ning, it almost seemed as if this girl was deliberately trying to act cute.
"By the way, my name is Chen Ruo. May I ask your name?"
"I'm Ling Ning. Ling as in 'Ling Bo Sheng Su Chen,' Ning as in 'Ning Ning Qi Xian.' Just call me Ling Ning."
"Oh~" Chen Ruo looked at Ling Ning with admiration. For her, being able to remember directions like that seemed like quite an impressive skill.
The classroom building wasn't too far from the entrance, but since Ling Ning had followed Chen Ruo, they had almost ended up at the teachers' dormitory. By the time they returned to the classroom building, all the other parents had already entered, likely already in their seats.
Luckily, they met a helpful teacher who informed them that the parent-teacher meeting was being held in their children's classroom.
Upon learning that Ling Ning's daughter was in Class 3, Grade 6, Chen Ruo breathed a sigh of relief—her own daughter was in the same class. Considering that everyone was probably already seated, she hated the idea of being the center of attention by walking in alone. With Ling Ning there, she could just hide behind her.
That was Chen Ruo's plan.
When the two of them knocked and entered the classroom, all eyes turned towards them. Faced with the numerous gazes, Chen Ruo instinctively hid behind Ling Ning, clutching onto her skirt and occasionally peeking out.
Ling Ning looked down at Chen Ruo, a helpless expression on her face. It almost felt like she had brought her own child to attend the meeting—meanwhile, her actual daughter was sitting in the classroom, watching her.
Ling Ning shook her head, trying to dispel the odd thought. She then addressed the teacher, "Hello, I'm Ling Ye's mother. I apologize for being late due to some unforeseen circumstances. And this here is..."
Ling Ning tugged on Chen Ruo's arm, prompting her to step forward.
Chen Ruo bit her lip nervously, but instead of coming out from behind Ling Ning, she merely peeked her head out, saying in a rush, "Hello, teacher. I'm Lin Yue's mother. Sorry for being late."
Once she finished speaking, she quickly ducked back behind Ling Ning.
The teacher nodded in understanding and invited them both to sit. However, there was only one available seat left, and they were two people. Considering Chen Ruo's petite figure...
"Th-this is so embarrassing."
Sitting on Ling Ning's lap, Chen Ruo suddenly felt even more eyes on her.
Seeing this, the teacher, who had been about to get another chair, stopped. For some reason, a strange sense of excitement flickered in his eyes.
