Chapter 208 : The Ageless Witch Lai and Pumpkin Sprout Satoru ()
Nanami Kento took a deep breath, calming his mind. Facing the grinning white-haired man before him, he felt his head grow a whole size bigger.
Gojo Satoru: "Then what should we do, Nanami? How about, you come be our driver?"
Nanami Kento answered expressionlessly: "If you help me complete the tasks assigned by the higher-ups, I can consider it."
"Never mind then." Gojo Satoru immediately waved his hand. "I don't want too much contact with those rotten oranges. Reporting, organizing, liaising with higher-ups and such, I'll leave that to you, Nanami!"
Little Sheep Jiang Lai spoke up timely from the side, saying soothingly to put Nanami Kento at ease:
"Don't worry, Nanami, most of the time I'm a law-abiding good boy... occasionally an outlaw."
Nanami Kento rubbed his temples: "Actually, you could have not added that last half sentence."
Little Sheep Jiang Lai blinked his dark eyes, leveraging his current first-year middle schooler shell advantage to launch another persuasion offensive:
"But I don't want to deceive Nanami... anyway, don't worry, I'll take good care of myself and Teacher Gojo."
Seeing Jiang Lai's performance, Gojo Satoru made an exaggerated tactical lean-back motion beside him, then got his foot stepped on secretly by Jiang Lai.
Nanami Kento lightly pushed his nose-pinching glasses, saying calmly: "Just taking care of yourself is enough, don't worry about him."
"Eh, that's too mean, Nanami!" Gojo Satoru's tone rose. "What about our colleague love? Our senior-junior relationship? I'm going to throw a tantrum, I really am going to throw a tantrum, you know?"
"...Please show some adult maturity, Gojo-san."
"Spicy teachers are forever young, forever seven years old~~" Gojo Satoru made a peace sign, then straightened up slightly, flattening his tone to answer, "Don't worry too much, Nanami, we have plans."
When uttering that last sentence, Gojo Satoru's tone dropped slightly, his voice becoming somewhat more serious.
His upright figure stood in front of the car, making a suave waving motion, his gestures quite charming:
"Rest assured, I'm the strongest. I've never disappointed you all, have I? You can completely trust me this time too."
"......" Nanami Kento didn't immediately reply. His eyes behind his glasses narrowed, sensing more from this.
In that last part of the conversation, he detected some things that weren't ordinary.
Gojo Satoru didn't seem to be simply taking the brown-haired boy out for training. This Hokkaido trip seemed to have other reasons.
As a reliable adult jujutsu sorcerer, Nanami Kento always had keen observation skills. He upheld the principle of keeping secrets, always seeing through without speaking up.
So he was silent for a moment, finally saying slowly: "...Be careful on the road."
"Mm, we'll be careful." Little Sheep Jiang Lai still carried his little backpack, energetically waving at this moment. "Bye bye, Nanami!"
Nanami Kento saw off Gojo Satoru and Jiang Lai at the school gate. But before they left, he still specially reminded Jiang Lai to adjust his speed dial settings, seriously stating:
"Though I completely trust Gojo-san's abilities, in other aspects, I still have to say, when necessary, just call the police with one button."
Jiang Lai: "Okay, no problem."
Gojo Satoru: "Hey hey, I can hear you!!"
Anyway, after some farewell antics, they finally embarked on the journey to Hokkaido.
For this drive, Gojo Satoru took off his blindfold and specially changed to the sunglasses from his school days.
Because the black blindfold covering his eyes was too conspicuous, like challenging traffic rules as an outlaw, very easy to be stopped by traffic police.
Rarely seeing Gojo Satoru wear sunglasses again, Jiang Lai sitting in the passenger seat couldn't help but look a few more times.
At certain moments, he felt the other was just like a teenager from school days, time rewound to long ago.
"What's wrong, mesmerized by the invincible handsome guy?" Gojo Satoru teased while driving.
"I'm just curious how you've managed not to age for over ten years." Pausing here, Jiang Lai said, "Both your face and your mindset."
"I accept the face part, but what about mindset?" Gojo Satoru said. "I'm much more mature than my former self, it's just that most of the time I prefer to be childish, convenient for being willful and causing trouble."
"Revealing the truth there."
Gojo Satoru chuckled, turning on the car stereo. His slender fingers tapped a few times, playing a song with peculiar tones, like tinkling music from an ancient castle, mixed with black and white fairy tale charm.
Jiang Lai listened attentively, somewhat surprised by Gojo Satoru's music taste. He hadn't expected the other to like this type of music.
But before he could ask anything, Gojo Satoru explained first: "This song is called 'The Ageless Witch and the Pumpkin Sprout.' I listened to it often during middle school."
"'The Ageless Witch and the Pumpkin Sprout'?" Jiang Lai tilted his head slightly. "So before high school, you liked this type of song."
"Not really. I only listen to this one song of this type." Gojo Satoru turned up the volume, the car filled with the song's melodious, light whistle accompaniment.
"I listened to this song back then because I thought the ageless witch in it was very much like you, this thousand-year-old monster, while I was the observed native pumpkin sprout, every detail part of the experiment."
Jiang Lai caught the key point, couldn't help but raise his brow and smile: "Dark fairy tale? Looks like you were still wary of me back then."
"Naturally, who told you to appear so coincidentally both times, and so full of mystery."
Gojo Satoru flicked his tongue. "The childhood shrine, the middle school fireworks festival, with a face that never changed, that Six Eyes couldn't see through, yet always appeared by my side, just like the ageless witch in the song."
"So I would still be wary." Gojo Satoru said. "But wariness isn't hostility."
"Oh." Jiang Lai nodded. "I can understand."
Being wary because appearances were too coincidental and Six Eyes couldn't see through. But having no hostility because he sensed no killing intent and perceived only goodwill.
Jiang Lai had previously thought Gojo Satoru was Schrödinger's naturally friendly type, bonding with him early on. Now it seemed, perhaps true bonding was during the school period.
There happened to be a traffic light ahead, so Gojo Satoru stepped on the brakes. With the stopped vehicle having no extra noise around, this melodious peculiar music echoed in their ears.
Gojo Satoru still faced forward, his azure eyes behind sunglasses slightly lowered. After pausing a few seconds, he suddenly said:
"But I think... back then, I was still looking forward to seeing you."
His voice was neither loud nor quiet, very calm. But for Gojo Satoru, such calm tone was really rare.
Light and shadow from outside the car window rippled on his refined profile. The white-haired man gazing into the distance looked like he was gazing at the past in the long river of time.
Jiang Lai was slightly stunned, pausing briefly before his lip corners lifted, joking along with the currently playing song: "Because I'm an ageless witch who diligently cultivates plants?"
"Because you're someone who brings everything I wouldn't encounter otherwise." Gojo Satoru also smiled. "Pumpkin sprouts never lack sunlight and rain, but they do look forward to witnessing the outside world, witnessing incredible miracles and magic."
"Never thought I'd hear you compare yourself to a pumpkin sprout someday." Jiang Lai opened his phone, pretending to record, joking, "This must be properly documented."
"Didn't you also very naturally compare yourself to a witch?" Gojo Satoru raised his brow, leisurely saying slowly, "And even if I'm a pumpkin sprout, I'm the most handsome, coolest, strongest one."
"......That's so like you."
The red light time ended, and the vehicle continued traveling on the road. Today was a weekday, but it wasn't rush hour now, so traffic wasn't congested.
The single-loop music echoed in the car. Neither spoke again, quietly enjoying the peculiar melody.
When driving out of Tokyo's urban area and entering the suburbs, Jiang Lai withdrew his attention from outside the window. Suddenly remembering something, he turned his head to ask:
"By the way, Satoru, about what happened a thousand years ago... how's your memory of it now?"
"Pretty much remembered it all, I think." Gojo Satoru lifted his eyelids, his tone lazy. "Back in the day I could beat up rotten oranges, but now I have to restrain myself temporarily for the big picture. Sigh, such a pity~"
"There'll be opportunities sooner or later." Jiang Lai coughed and comforted him, then paused and asked, "Then... do you have more memories about Gojo Kyufuin from a thousand years ago?"
"Him?" Gojo Satoru raised his brow, his face showing a thoughtful expression, his glass-bead-like clear blue eyes gathering memories. "If I search carefully through my memories... it seems I can indeed recall more impressions."
"A thousand years ago I wasn't very familiar with him. He was the Grand Elder's child, but the Grand Elder was very cold to him, treating him like a subordinate. People around were all guessing he wasn't biological."
"Though he counted as Gojo main family, because of his awkward status, he initially wasn't valued at all. When I played around the family as a child, I'd occasionally run into him reading old books in corners."
"Oh, speaking of which, he was quite bold back then." Gojo Satoru tilted his head, thinking. "At that time, few kids my age in the family dared talk to me, yet he would actually come up and ask to borrow books."
"Did you lend them to him?"
"Just books, I didn't care about them. If he wanted them, I gave them to him." Gojo Satoru said. "He was neglected in childhood, but gradually started having a place in the family as he grew up. Because he was good at dealing with people, he could recruit staff for the family."
"But thinking back now, it's somewhat surprising. Growing up in an environment of bullying, he could still smile at those who bullied him then." Gojo Satoru clicked his tongue lightly. "After growing up, his relationship with those people seemed pretty good. Quite tolerant."
Jiang Lai listened quietly. Here, he suddenly spoke: "Not necessarily."
Jiang Lai turned his face, his boyish eyes incredibly round: "Do you still remember whether all those people died peacefully of old age?"
