Invincible through Touching Corpses

Chapter 173 - 172: Mercenary Corps Strength

The moment the explosions rang out, everyone whipped their heads around to look at the two mushroom clouds rising in the distance. There was no joy in their eyes at having caught the enemy in a trap—only grim seriousness.

The Morgan Conglomerate had indeed sent people to track them, but they had no idea how many there were, or what the extent of the damage was.

Countless speculations swirled in their minds.

"So, they were tracking us," Song Yao said, his tone heavy. "What are your thoughts? Do we double back and set an ambush, or do we press on?"

After a moment of contemplation, Qin Wenbo offered his opinion. "I think we should keep moving forward. We’ve put nearly five kilometers between us. It won’t be easy for them to catch up within the city limits. Plus, we’re about to cross through the entire city center, so our chances of shaking them are very high."

"Besides, we don’t know how many of them there are. The mission is on a tight schedule. We already detoured to get to Changping City. If we get tied up in another ambush, we might not reach our destination by the appointed Time. If our contact has already left by then, the mission will be a failure."

"Brother Lin, what about you? Any suggestions?" Song Yao asked.

"Let’s keep moving," Lin Xinghai said after a moment’s thought. "The mission is the priority."

’He was confident in his own strength. It wouldn’t be too late to fight if and when the enemy actually caught up. He didn’t want the mission to fail just because he tried to gain the upper hand with an ambush.’

"Alright!" Song Yao agreed. Once the three of them reached an agreement, the convoy pressed on without delay.

Knowing there were pursuers behind them, their convoy picked up considerable Speed.

Less than ten minutes later, the convoy neared the city center.

Upon entering the city proper, their previously breakneck pace was finally forced to slow.

The city center was packed with skyscrapers, and even more of them had collapsed. A single glance down the main thoroughfare revealed that nearly half of the road was buried under fallen buildings.

Normally, Armored Vehicles would find it completely impassable. Exploration in such areas was usually carried out by Mecha working in concert with multi-purpose all-terrain vehicles.

This was what made the city center so dangerous.

Only now, with the three Mercenary Corps united and their combined force of sixteen Mecha, did they have the power to forcibly clear a path.

But having the ability to do so was one thing. With so many collapsed buildings, it was impossible to move quickly.

And as the convoy slowed, the threat from the Zombies skyrocketed—especially in a place like the city center, which was densely packed with them.

RAT-A-TAT-TAT!

After Lin Xinghai and the other leaders gave the command, the long-absent sound of gunfire finally erupted.

Zombies that neared the convoy were swiftly gunned down, but they kept coming in relentless waves. As the convoy pushed deeper into the city, the number of Zombies swelled, and the pressure on the Three Major Mercenary Corps began to mount.

It was then that the difference in strength between the Three Major Mercenary Corps became apparent.

The group defending with the most ease was not the Holy Light Mercenary Corps, supposedly the strongest of the three. Nor was it the Soaring Dragon Merc, led by the former First Divine Sharpshooter Tang Zhuofei. In a surprising turn, it was the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps, the one with the fewest members.

And this was without Lin Xinghai even lifting a finger.

This instantly caused the expressions on Song Yao and Qin Wenbo to turn serious.

They had never really paid much attention to the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps. In their eyes, if not for Lin Xinghai, it was nothing more than an ordinary Second Level Mercenary Corps.

They had only gotten this far by riding Lin Xinghai’s coattails, which gave them ample funding.

They hadn’t thought much of its members’ combat prowess.

But now, they were shocked to discover that the Gun Technique of every single member of the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps was on par with that of their own hand-picked elite squads.

Once a corps reached the Third Level, the Mercenary Guild capped its membership at 200. Therefore, after filling their rosters, the focus shifted to refining the quality of their members.

Elite squads were the product of this philosophy.

Without a doubt, the Mercenaries selected for these squads were the cream of the crop, with their Gun Technique being of the utmost importance.

Every Third Level Mercenary Corps took immense pride in its elite squad.

When looking down on First and Second Level Mercenary Corps, many Third Level corps would often boast, "I could send out a single one of my elite squads and wipe you all out."

But the scene unfolding before them felt like it was grinding the pride of the Third Level Mercenary Corps into the dust.

Once the two other Mercenary Corps accepted this reality, they began discussing and analyzing on their respective communication channels, desperate to know how the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps had managed this. Did they have some kind of special training method?

Soon, after ruling out various other possibilities, Tang Zhuofei offered his theory. "This should all be because of Lin Xinghai."

"How is that possible?" Qin Wenbo was incredulous. "It takes us so much Time and energy just to form a thirty-man elite squad. They were only promoted to a Second Level Mercenary Corps a few days ago! Even if they have the money, it’s impossible to train members that quickly."

"When it comes to coaching Gun Technique, you know what I’m capable of. I can take a veteran Mercenary and dramatically improve their Gun Technique in just one day."

Qin Wenbo nodded. This was one of the reasons why Divine Sharpshooters held such an esteemed position in any Mercenary Corps. Their personal skill was one thing, but more importantly, they could elevate the Gun Technique of the other members.

"But Lin Xinghai... he could probably achieve in one hour what takes me a full day." As he spoke, a complex expression crossed Tang Zhuofei’s face.

"That’s impossible! Even if they call him a Gun God, he can’t be *that* good, can he?!" Qin Wenbo was still finding it hard to believe.

"Before I met him, I probably would have thought the same thing. But back at the Shelter, while we were waiting to accept the mission, I asked him for some pointers on Gun Technique. His fundamental understanding of the art is just... unbelievably solid."

"It’s no exaggeration to say that his insight into Gun Technique is on a completely different level from us so-called Divine Sharpshooters."

"If you don’t believe me, contact the Holy Light Mercenary Corps. Mo Fei and Tang Hao have likely reached the same conclusion." After saying his piece, Tang Zhuofei ended the call. He gazed silently in the direction of the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps, his thoughts a mystery.

Qin Wenbo was still hesitating whether to contact Song Yao when a call came in from the man himself. Song Yao got straight to the point, asking about Tang Zhuofei’s theory.

Upon learning that all three Divine Sharpshooters had reached the same conclusion, the two Mercenary Corps Leaders fell silent.

In that moment, their hearts were filled with nothing but envy and jealousy for one man: Fang Tianhe.
