Chapter 31 - Chen Ran is Transferring
“Chosen? Settled? They even plan to launch it as a project?” When Director Zhang received the notification, he even issued those three soul-searching questions.
After hanging up the phone, he still felt as if he were waking from a dream.
Judging from the quality of the proposal, it wasn't surprising that Chen Ran won.
Director Zhang was an experienced veteran; he naturally understood very clearly how high the quality of this proposal was.
Even he, or even many directors, had never written such a brilliant proposal.
But while it was good, direct project initiation was a bit beyond his expectations.
In his imagination, even if Chen Ran's proposal was better, with higher completion and more excellence, the Entertainment Channel would surely have to hold meetings and mull it over for a while before deciding.
The proposal submitted this morning—it wasn't even time to get off work in the afternoon yet, and the Entertainment Channel had already determined to make this show. It was somewhat too fast!
Director Zhang was naturally happy, feeling happy for Chen Ran from the bottom of his heart.
In just a few months since joining, he directly became the Chief Planner for an Entertainment Channel program. Director Zhang didn't know the situation at other TV stations, but at their Zhaonan TV Station, this was a unique case.
It could only be said that the stepping stone Chen Ran chose was too good.
So good that even the station's leaders couldn't resist it, and the Entertainment Channel's Director also praised it, winning over Lin Fan without any controversy.
Director Zhang didn't rest and immediately made a call to Chen Ran.
“Congratulations, congratulations! Your proposal was chosen, and just as you wished, it’s confirmed that the new program will use it—direct project initiation.” Director Zhang's voice was full of joy.
Chen Ran had been sitting in front of his computer, looking through information about the Entertainment Channel. Suddenly hearing such good news, he couldn't help but feel happy too.
Like Director Zhang, he wasn't surprised at winning over Lin Fan, but to actually have it directly launched as a project still gave him a dream-like feeling.
With his hard work over two days yielding results, Chen Ran was definitely overjoyed. He said solemnly to Director Zhang, “Uncle, thank you!”
Director Zhang laughed, “Being like this with me is a bit too distant. Besides, this doesn't have much to do with me; it’s mainly because your own ability is good. If you didn't have this ability, the station couldn't have chosen you.”
Chen Ran said, “Without Uncle applying to the higher-ups, I wouldn't have had this opportunity. No matter what my ability is like, without this opportunity, it would be impossible to go to the Entertainment Channel.”
“Alright, alright, what’s between us? Let’s not talk about these formalities.” Director Zhang said with a chuckle,
“Your transfer order will be down tomorrow. I heard that Director Yang of the Entertainment Channel is already starting to have people selected below. Once the program is approved, preparation will begin immediately. By the time you go over, the production crew will be fully staffed, so you should prepare well these next two days.”
Director Zhang emphasized, “Even though you're going to the Entertainment Channel, you still need to sort out your current work handover clearly. Don't let me have to call you back for help after you've transferred away.”
Chen Ran said, “Understood, Uncle.”

Early the next morning, Chen Ran's transfer order came down.
Director Zhang read out the notice at the morning meeting. The others were startled and then looked at each other, completely failing to understand why Chen Ran was suddenly being transferred to the Entertainment Channel.
The key was that the notice was issued by the station itself. Looking at the content, it was the Entertainment Channel that had proactively requested Chen Ran, and furthermore, he was to serve as the Chief Planner for a new program.
Many people felt this was a bit too surreal!
Although Chen Ran's contribution to Zhaonan Focus was not small and showed impressive ability, that was a news program. Chen Ran had absolutely no experience in producing variety shows; he was a complete newcomer. To have him serve as Chief Planner?
How did it feel like if any one of them present were pulled over, they would be more reliable than Chen Ran? After all, they had plenty of experience!
Yet no one suspected Director Zhang of opening a back door for Chen Ran. Director Zhang was just a Director; his scope of authority was limited to the Public Channel's program department, and he was only responsible for the program department. He could not influence the Entertainment Channel at all.
Director Liu Bing, hearing the news, was also utterly stunned.
Mainly because this news was too sudden, without the slightest bit of preparation.
Chen Ran was still the Chief Planner of Zhaonan Focus. The program had been on the air for less than a month, yet the Chief Planner was already being transferred—who could have expected that?
Then Liu Bing recalled Chen Ran coming to the TV station on Sunday and how he hadn't slept well during these recent easy days, and he suddenly fell into deep thought.
“Since Chen Ran is going to the Entertainment Channel, he can no longer hold the position of Chief Planner for Zhaonan Focus. Starting today, the position will be concurrently held by Director Liu Bing. I hope Director Liu Bing can complete the handover with Chen Ran as soon as possible so as not to affect the normal broadcast of the program,” Director Zhang announced.
The planning work for Zhaonan Focus, except for the initial preparation period, wasn't actually that busy. Since many decisions had to be made by Liu Bing anyway, having him hold the position concurrently was indeed a very good arrangement.
Liu Bing expressed no objection, and naturally, the others had nothing to say.
After the meeting adjourned, Liu Bing found Chen Ran and said with a chuckle, “Congratulations, congratulations. This counts as a promotion, right?”
Chen Ran smiled and said, “Director Liu, you’re joking. It’s the same work wherever I go. The position hasn't changed and the responsibilities haven't changed; it’s just a change of working environment.”
Liu Bing shook his head and said, “That’s not the same. Our Public Channel can't compare to the Entertainment Channel. Just in terms of ratings alone, the gap is far too huge.”
Chen Ran said, “You can't put it that way. At least the Entertainment Channel hasn't produced a show like Zhaonan Focus. This program will stabilize, and by then, it shouldn't be hard to firmly secure the number one spot in local ratings.”
Liu Bing didn't doubt this, but that wasn't how things were calculated. He didn't say more on that front and instead asked,
“You’ve been busy with Entertainment Channel matters these past few days. I’m really curious—how did you just parachute in as the Chief Planner over there? The Entertainment Channel was willing?”
Chen Ran didn't hide it and said, “It was just fair competition. I was lucky enough to win, so I’m fortunate enough to become the Chief Planner.”
Liu Bing didn't ask further, but he knew that Chen Ran’s position as Chief Planner wasn't gained out of thin air; it was the result of winning a competition against people from the Entertainment Channel.
“Alright, let’s talk about Zhaonan Focus matters.”
Chen Ran also nodded; he also wanted to finish the work handover early to avoid any problems later.
“Director Liu, I have a document here. Inside are some summaries and creative ideas I wrote regarding Zhaonan Focus, including some program details. Please take a look when you have time, Director Liu; I hope it can give you some inspiration.” Chen Ran took out a document and handed it to Liu Bing.
Chen Ran also had this habit of printing documents out; reading on a computer wasn't as memorable as having a hard copy.
“This is good stuff!” Liu Bing’s eyes lit up.
Chen Ran added, “Actually, Zhaonan Focus has already gotten on the right track and found the correct model. Anything more I say would just be a platitude. As long as the concept of doing good and practical deeds for the common people remains unchanged, the program will continue to be stable like this...”
One day passed.
Chen Ran finished the work handover.
Actually, it wouldn't have taken that long, but Liu Bing was a serious person; he asked detailed questions, was cautious in every aspect, and was very thorough, which is why it took so long.
Before walking out of the Public Channel, Chen Ran took one last look.
The next time he entered the TV station, he wouldn't be coming to this floor.
