Chapter 68: A Shocking Betrayal
Chapter 68
"You’re late. I thought we agreed to meet earlier than this."
"I came as agreed," the baby-faced girl’s voice replied calmly. "If you expected me to rush in like an idiot, then you’re clearly overestimating your own importance."
Alex widened his eyes in surprise.
’So they do know each other?’
The man’s voice from earlier continued.
"Watch your tone, you’re not in any position to act arrogant anymore. But if you want to duke it out, I’m all ready."
"Enough of this! We are supposed to be working together, not arguing among ourselves like a bunch of kids."
The earlier man just huffed while the baby-faced girl didn’t say another word.
"Alright girl, I hope you remember that the timing has to be perfectly right, with no room for mistakes. Because If we act too early, everything will collapse in one fell swoop. And we can not afford to fail this."
"It will be handled. You just need to follow through on your part and I’ll do mine."
The first man’s voice suddenly rang out.
"Haha good. Now that’s what I’m talking about. But I just hope you’re confident in bringing you know who to that location without alerting her. We don’t want to mess up the plan, now do we?"
"Yes, she practically trusts me with her life." She paused then continued. "Besides, the other five awakened, aside from me, are currently outside the country, helping her with her newly acquired diamond mine, so she’s practically at her lowest point in defense right now."
Alex’s fingers pressed more firmly against the wall leaving a small dent as his face slowly turned serious. Every word he had just heard settled heavily in the back of his mind, aligning into a certain image that he did not like no matter how much he tried to interpret it.
’So they are really talking about killing Nyx. And that baby-faced girl is...’
He still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that the baby-faced girl was a fucking betrayer. It felt so surreal that the very person who had sworn loyalty to the underworld queenpin was now actively conspiring with the very people that sought to kill her.
He didn’t want to believe that she was really doing this, but the things he had just heard were as clear as day. Alex calmed his raging emotions. If she was really prepared to kill Nyx, then he no longer had any qualms about dealing with her.
But first things first. He had to continue listening to their plan, before concocting a counter measure of his own. Like hell he would ever allow anyone to kill one of his women.
Inside, there was a pause before the second man spoke again, this time his tone sounded even calmer than before, and it even carried an undercurrent of caution.
"Good. Then we proceed as planned. Once she arrives, we isolate her and make sure she can’t call for help. That’s why one of our brothers will set up a signal jammer around the area."
The first man chuckled under his breath
"I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Just watching her sit at the top like she owns everything..." He clicked his tongue. "It’s about time someone showed her her place. And reminds her how fragile that position really is.... But dude, I hope we don’t kill her too soon. After all, letting the most beautiful woman in the city die like that would really be a shame."
The baby-faced girl remained silent before responding coolly.
"You talk too much."
"And you don’t talk enough!" He shot back. "You’re always acting like that bitch Nyx. Like you guys are above everyone else. You better remember who you’re dealing with. I will not hesitate to fight right here right now, and teach that pretty body of yours a lesson."
"You can try it if you don’t want to see the light of tomorrow ever again."
The second man cleared his throat, cutting through the tension before it could escalate into a full blown war that would most certainly draw unnecessary attention and destroy part of the building.
"Enough! Personal issues can wait after all this is done. What matters most is we get the work done. Remember we only have one shot at this. So stop all these childish arguments!"
The heavy silence that followed the man’s outburst seemed to stretch the very air thin. Alex remained perfectly still with his back now pressed against the door as he processed the sheer scale of the dangerous plan unfolding a few feet away from him.
This plan didn’t just sound like a simple assassination attempt, it sounded like something that must have been planned for years. Just how long had this plan been going on? And now with her five powerhouses away, Nyx was effectively just like a queen without a knight to protect her.
Soon the sound of something like paper being unfurled rang out.
"The location is right here. Which is the abandoned shipyard on the southern docks. It’s out of the way and is largely shielded from the city’s surveillance grid, and most importantly, it’s a place that she already uses for occasionally smuggling some supplies into the city. So if you can lure her here under the guise of an emergency regarding one of her shipments, then she won’t suspect a thing until the gates are locked and the jammer is active.
Once the signal goes dark, she’d already belong to us because by that time we would have already secured the perimeter with seven of our elite snipers, all equipped with high-penetration rounds designed specifically to ensure that even an awakened is as helpless as a baby."
Alex felt his jaw tighten. A shipyard? That was like a freaking death trap. With the presence of wide open spaces surrounded by gigantic shipping containers that offered like a thousand different angles for the sniper. If they managed to even isolate her there, then even Nyx, with all her formidable tactical mind and astounding intelligence won’t be able to survive a coordinated ambush of that magnitude without her Awakened subordinates.
"And the reward?" The first man asked, his voice now thick with greed. "The mastermind promised us a share of her territory once we killed her. All I want is the western district with all her clubs. I’m tired of playing second fiddle to a woman who thinks she’s a goddess just because she’s got a sharp tongue and a bank account.
"You might get what you were promised," the girl replied. "Assuming you don’t find a way to get yourself killed before the job is finished. The mastermind is not known for his patience with those who fail, and if the mission so much as fails because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut and focus on the perimeter, then I don’t think you have to worry about the western district. You’ll be lucky if they even find enough of you to fill a shoe box."
"Hahaha. Always so dramatic. Just make sure you play your part, sweetheart and lead the lamb to the slaughter house. We’ll handle the rest from there. Besides I’ve already got my sights zeroed in. I want to see the look on her cold face when she realizes that the girl who used to protect her with her life, is the one who handed her a death sentence."
Alex’s eyes began to darken as he stared at the dent his hand had made in the wall. The hateful crap coming out of their mouth was really beginning to get on his nerves.
He would have considered immobilizing them, if it was not for the presence of two awakened. Sure he could handle the baby-faced girl now, but the prospect of fighting another awakened whose ability was currently unknown was just too risky, but not impossible.
Soon the sound of footsteps approaching the door signaled that the meeting was already coming to an end. Just as Alex was about to quickly leave there, the voice of the second man rang out again, halting his steps.
"Remember, we start the mission at seven pm sharp, tomorrow. So make sure you check your equipment, confirm your positions, and for the love of God, keep your phones off until the jammer is up. I cannot stress this enough, we cannot afford to screw this."
"Understood." The girl muttered.
After confirming that, that was all. Alex prepared to slip out and get the hell out of here. Since he already had all the information he needed, from the location to the timing to even the people involved. All that was left was to dismantle this well thought out plan piece by piece, and he would start by ensuring the lamb they were so eager to slaughter was kept safe and sound.
But just as he took his first step back, the first man’s voice suddenly rang out, causing cold sweat to instantly form all over his back.
"Sniff... Sniff. Wait a damn minute. Who the hell is standing out there?! I can smell your body scent and I can hear your heart pounding against your chest, so don’t even think of running!"
