Chapter 65: Issuing A Death Order
Chapter 65
Meanwhile somewhere in the city’s outskirts stood an old dignified building, with rows of expensive looking cars ranging from sleek Maybach to aggressive Ferrari parked at the entrance.
A tall slender looking man with gold-rimmed glasses, got out of a black Rolls-Royce and adjusted his glasses with a dignified expression, before he strode toward the entrance, accompanied by his two bulky bodyguards who looked less like men and more like twin pillars of meat and solid muscles.
Inside, the slender looking man asked for directions from a beautiful receptionist, before being taken toward a dimly-lit luxurious room. At the entrance of the room, was a tall bulky man, who looked like he was probably around six foot four. The massive man stepped out, blocking his path and said coldly.
"You can only go alone. No company."
The two bodyguards tried to protest against the instruction, but the slender looking man silenced them with a single wave of his hands and strode inside. Though not before leaving these words.
"Just wait for me outside and don’t make a fuss. Don’t forget who stays inside. Even I dare not speak before he speaks."
The door closed behind him with a soft, deliberate click that seemed far louder than it should have been. The man continued forward with slow, cautious steps into the deadly quiet room.
Looking around, he noticed that the room’s lighting was low, casting long shadows across the walls, and after waiting for a minute, his eyes slowly began to adjust to his surroundings. At that moment he finally saw him.
Seated at the far end of the room, behind a wide desk carved from dark wood, was a middle-aged man, with a head full of black hair and an amiable almost friendly face, but hidden behind that harmless face was a man whose presence seemed to dominate everything around him without much effort
He wasn’t doing anything particularly imposing or even looking at him yet. Instead, his attention was fixed on a glass of amber liquid in his hand, as he gently swirled it with slow, almost absent movements. Yet the air itself felt heavier because of him.
The slender man stopped a few steps away from the desk and instinctively straightened his body as his heartbeat picked up ever so slightly. He didn’t dare speak in the man’s presence, proving that his earlier warning to his bodyguards had not been a bluff.
Seconds passed before the man behind the desk finally lifted his gaze up. Even though it was a small, almost insignificant movement, the moment their eyes met, the slender man felt his body tremble with fear. The man before him, was a very powerful man whose power rivaled that of Nyx. Anyone in his stead might have even passed out in fear a minute ago.
The slender man swallowed a gulp of saliva, before bowing his head in a respectful greeting.
"I appreciate you granting me an audience, Mr Gordon."
Marcus didn’t even bat an eyelid, he just took another sip from his glass and set it with care, only then did he lean back into his chair and rested his arms deliberately against the armrest.
"So what was so important that you had to see me, Slekovich. You should know I’m a very busy man, with a lot of things to do."
Slekovich’s expression turned pale before he masked it.
"It is really important Mr Gordon. It’s about a new shareholder who’s just been introduced to BluePeak Corporation as the new largest shareholder followed by Nyx. He ruined one of the plans we’ve been perfecting for some time now"
Marcus raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Oh. And who could this interesting fellow be?"
Slekovich hesitated before answering.
"It’s a young man who goes by the name Alex Walker, I’ve already had my private investigator look...."
Marcus Gordon immediately cut his words short.
"Did you just say Alex Walker? A young boy who looks like a model from Vogue magazine. With black hair and green eyes, and an extremely sharp tongue that never seems to stay in one place?"
Slekovich stared at Marcus with surprise. From his dumbfounded expression you could clearly see that he was probably wondering how Marcus Gordon was able to know about the young man called Alex.
"Sir.... Permit me if I may ask, but how do you know about that young man called Alex?"
Marcus glanced at him, before deciding to answer.
"That young man, as you would so put it, is the so-called boyfriend of Nyx who made me lose face at a very important meeting with other powerful bigshots. He made a mockery of me by beating Damian, formerly known as the undefeated gambling king in his own game. I had one of my men investigate him and found out that the boy was in fact Nyx’s favourite little pet. Though it’s not like I give a damn about their romantic life. What I hate is that he made me lose face in front of the world. Now speak. Which of our plans did he ruin?"
"Sir he sabotaged the plan of having BluePeak launch the cheap copy of Facebuk, which would have gone smoothly if he hadn’t opened his wide mouth, and called it out." Slekovich reported while lowering his head. "Now the plan of having BluePeak face legal battle against meta, so that a significant portion of its stocks would drop down, has failed."
Slekovich lowered his gaze after delivering that report. He was waiting for a response from Marcus, but nothing came, only a cold unbearable silence filled the room. He could even feel a bead of sweat slide down his temple.
"Failed...?" Marcus repeated, his voice dangerously calm.
He then leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk as his eyes settled on Slekovich with a quiet intensity that made the latter’s throat tighten.
"So let me understand this properly. We spent months setting up a chain reaction, baiting BluePeak into launching a counterfeit platform, so that they can engage in a legal war, crash their stocks and I can use that opportunity to acquire a significant portion of its stock at a minimal price and cripple one of Nyx’s power..."
He paused.
"And you’re telling me that all that collapsed because of one boy?"
Slekovich swallowed.
"Y-yes... Mr Gordon. Everything was set, even Nyx herself had prepared to launch the app in a month or two, but the moment the boy came, he forced the entire board to halt the project with his fifty percent shares, before gaining additional support from Nyx."
Marcus let out a soft, thoughtful hum and leaned back into his chair again.
"I see. So from making me lose face, the brat had the effrontery to ruin one of my carefully concocted schemes. Good. Very good." He turned his gaze back to Slekovich and asked. "So tell me... What else did your investigation uncover?"
"Very little sir. His background is... Unusually clean. From what my investigator told me, the boy was raised in an orphanage. Never knew his mom, never knew his dad. I tried to find out their identities but it looks like they never even existed. He goes to Westfield college. He is as poor as a church rat, imagine my shock when I found out that the largest shareholder is poor and aside from his face, there’s nothing noteworthy about him."
Marcus’ eyes narrowed into slits.
"Are you telling me that, that is all you managed to gain, Slekovich? A boy who won a high stake game against the world’s best gambler and won easily. A boy who managed to insult Renzo Kade from the Kade family and a boy who managed to become Nyx’s boyfriend and you tell me that his background is clean?"
"Oh I forgot something sir," Slekovich stammered. "My private investigator was able to find out that he had recently gone to a small-time gang leader’s house, fought a lot of people and came back unscathed. Aside from that... There’s nothing else we could find."
Marcus froze. His eyes widened and he began to mutter to himself.
"Wait. He faced a lot of people and came out unscathed? Could he be one of those....?" He shook his head violently, denying the thought. "No, what am I even saying, there’s no way a person like him can be one of those people."
"But just to be sure, I’ll have to send one of my subordinates to test him, and if my fears are confirmed.... Then he cannot be allowed to live. I will not allow Nyx to tip the power scale into her favour by gaining another Awakened subordinate."
Slekovich blinked, confused.
"Sir, sorry if I’m intruding once again. But what do you mean by an Awakened subordinate? Is it something we need to be concerned about?"
"No Slekovich. This is something that does not concern you. So forget you heard that word. In fact, forget you even heard this conversation. If I hear even a whisper of this, I don’t need to spell out what I do to people who anger me."
"Y-yes sir. Of course. I’ve even forgotten what I asked earlier."
"Good. Now leave." Marcus commanded. "And make sure that you continue to keep an eye on that boy. Oh and get ready to execute our next plan for BluePeak."
Slekovich nodded frantically, before scrambling out of the room. After he was gone, Marcus picked up his phone, dialed a number and said coldly.
"Black Rose. Come back from London. I need you to deal with a very important pest."
