Chapter 170: Raising the Pressure
Selene’s first few attempts were awkward.
TWANG
The arrow flew but missed by a wide margin.
She frowned slightly.
"...That was bad."
She shifted position again.
Then shot another arrow.
TWANG
This one was better.
It brushed Nox’s arm while the scout tried to turn around a pillar.
"Hey!"
Nox jumped forward.
Selene moved again immediately.
Commander Lyra observed both of them with sharp eyes.
The first stage of the drill was always messy.
It had to be.
Change forced the body to learn.
After several more minutes the difference slowly started to appear.
Nox began adjusting the way she carried the sack.
Instead of letting it hang loosely she pressed it tighter against her shoulder. Her steps became shorter but more stable.
She started using the obstacles more carefully.
Sliding around corners.
Turning early.
Sometimes she even stopped for half a second before changing direction suddenly.
Selene noticed that too.
Her arrows started missing more often now.
"...She’s getting better."
Nox grinned while jumping over another crate.
"I heard that!"
Selene didn’t answer.
She moved again.
This time she climbed halfway up a slanted beam before shooting downward.
TWANG
The arrow clipped Nox’s sleeve.
"Got you."
Nox rolled behind a pillar.
"Barely!"
Commander Lyra watched the exchange carefully.
The difference was clear now.
At the beginning both of them had been reacting slowly.
Now they were moving with more ease.
Nox’s steps became lighter even with the sack.
Selene’s movement became smoother.
She no longer paused too long before shooting.
The drill was starting to work.
Arthur and the others watched from the side.
Ryn leaned against a wooden post.
"I think I’d rather fight monsters than carry that sack."
Arthur chuckled.
"You’d trip in the first minute."
Ryn looked offended.
"Excuse me. I’m very graceful."
Arthur pointed toward Nox who almost slipped again while jumping a beam.
"Sure."
Nox recovered quickly though.
She ran forward and slid beneath a hanging rope before turning sharply behind a crate.
Selene’s arrow struck the wood instead.
THUNK
Selene narrowed her eyes.
"Hmm."
She shifted again.
Commander Lyra finally spoke.
"Better."
Both girls heard it.
It wasn’t praise.
But it meant they were improving.
After another round of movement Lyra raised her hand.
"Enough."
Both Nox and Selene slowed down.
Nox dropped the sack on the ground and stretched her arms.
"That thing is evil."
Selene lowered her bow and wiped sweat from her forehead.
Lyra walked toward them calmly.
"You’re adjusting."
Nox nodded proudly.
"I survived."
Lyra ignored the comment.
"Which means it’s time to increase the difficulty."
Ryn groaned quietly.
"Of course it is."
Lyra turned her gaze toward Althea.
"You’re next."
Althea straightened immediately.
"Yes commander."
Lyra stepped closer.
"This will train you as well."
Then she explained the new drill.
At first it sounded simple.
But as she spoke the others slowly realized how complicated it actually was.
"You will support Nox while she runs the route," Lyra said.
Althea nodded.
"How?"
"You will use your binding spell on Selene."
Selene blinked.
"Me?."
Lyra continued calmly.
"But you must also watch Nox."
She gestured toward the sack.
"And because she was adapting too quickly..."
Nox already looked suspicious.
Lyra dropped another sack beside the first one.
"...she will carry two."
Nox stared at the second sack.
"You’re joking."
Lyra wasn’t joking.
Nox sighed heavily and lifted the second sack.
Her knees bent immediately.
"Oh wow. Okay this is worse."
Lyra continued explaining.
"You will buff Nox if Selene lands a precise hit. At the same time you must try binding Selene to stop her attacks."
Althea nodded slowly.
"So control and protection."
"Exactly."
Lyra folded her arms.
"And you must move while doing it."
Althea smiled slightly.
"That will be difficult."
"That is the point."
The drill began again.
This time the change was immediate.
Nox struggled the moment she started running.
The extra weight dragged her steps down and her usual agility dropped sharply.
Selene noticed it too.
She moved quickly and fired.
TWANG
The arrow struck Nox’s arm.
Nox winced.
But a soft glow appeared around her body.
Althea’s defensive buff.
"Nice timing," Nox said while running.
Althea was already moving again.
But now she had another task.
Her hand lifted.
Symbols formed in the air.
"Bind."
The spell shot toward Selene.
Selene reacted instantly and rolled behind a pillar.
The glowing chains struck the wood instead.
Althea sighed.
"She’s fast."
Selene moved again while drawing another arrow.
Now she had to watch two opponents.
That slowed her.
Her shot missed.
Meanwhile Nox continued running with both sacks.
Her movements were slower but she kept going.
The pressure of the drill forced all three of them to think at once.
Selene had to attack while avoiding the binding.
Althea had to choose between protecting Nox or stopping Selene.
Nox had to move despite the weight.
At first it looked chaotic.
Althea missed two binding attempts in a row.
Selene’s shots lost their usual precision.
Nox bumped into a crate once and almost fell.
But slowly something changed.
Althea began reading Selene’s path better.
Her third binding spell nearly caught the marksman.
Selene had to jump aside quickly.
"That was close."
At the same time Nox started using obstacles more creatively.
She ran behind a pillar and suddenly changed direction.
Selene’s arrow missed.
Althea used the moment to buff her again.
Commander Lyra watched every movement.
Arthur noticed the small smirk that appeared on her face for a moment.
He chuckled quietly.
"She’s enjoying this."
Ryn nodded.
"She’s terrifying."
Lyra clapped once.
"Good."
Then she turned toward Arthur.
"Your turn."
Arthur raised a brow.
"Already?"
"Yes."
Lyra looked at him carefully.
"Help me increase the pressure."
Arthur already understood.
"You want chaos."
Lyra didn’t answer but her eyes said enough.
"Show me your control over the fire constructs."
Arthur nodded.
He stepped forward.
"Alright."
He had only started practicing the skill yesterday.
But this was a perfect chance to test it.
He lifted one hand.
A small flame appeared above his palm.
Then it stretched.
Twisted.
Formed into a sharp glowing shape.
Another appeared beside it.
Then another.
Several small fire constructs floated in the air around him.
Arthur smiled.
"Let’s try this."
