Chapter 190: Mister Steal your Fate
Revenant glanced over the party members as he finished telling them of his past, and their future. He left out a lot of details, but it was enough for them to get a clear image of what the future had in store for them.
Monsters and Mayhem, Death and Destruction, Blood and Bodies. He made sure to emphasise his final day. The day in which Jason Ashcroft, the famous Reaper of Stars, had fought against the members of his former guild and gave him his life just so that Revenant could get away.
Something he couldn’t even manage, in the end.
His clenched fist trembled by his side as he was reminded of it all. Not just the horror and carnage of it all, but how he had spent all of that time being nothing more than a snivelling and useless coward.
Revenant glanced up at Saige, the very man that had saved his life and yet he barely recognised him. Part of him knew things would change. After all, it was Jason’s destiny that he had stolen.
Revenant had followed in his footsteps, took the opportunities that were supposed to be his, and became exactly like the man he idolised. It was partly because in the future, Jason had been one of the most powerful fighters in the world, beside the traitorous Golden Princes.
So taking his power and combining it with his future knowledge, to increase that power tenfold should have been enough to stop everything. At least in Revenant’s mind.
But that wasn’t the only reason. The last moments of his life still haunted him, not because he had died. But because Jason had died for him, and he couldn’t even run properly. It was the one thing he had been doing all of his life, and he couldn’t do it when it finally mattered.
Not this time though. If someone was going to die fighting, then it was going to be him!
He didn’t steal Jason’s destiny so that he could bask in the power of it. He stole Jason’s destiny so that he could pay him back for the opportunity that sacrifice had given him.
Yet as he looked up nervously at the man that had saved him, even in this strange new body, all Revenant saw was a face of contempt.
"You really expect us to believe that?" Saige scoffed and shook his head,
"I mean for one, magic isn’t real. It’s just a game. Two, I’m not a necromancer in this game. I’m sure you had prepared that story nicely with the assumption I would be playing my usual character type, but you were dead wrong this time.
Three, monsters aren’t real and if you were going to make up a villain, you should have picked someone more believable than Percy. Of all the people, that guy is the least likely to turn against humanity, and we are on better terms than you think.
Finally, four. Magic isn’t real! Now I know I’ve said that one before, but it bares repeating because of all the idiotic details, that one is the most...."
Saige broke down Revenant’s story with a cocky, condescending smirk. Unable to believe that someone would ever try to pass off such a ridiculous story. Even if, and that was a big if, Belladonna’s skill had worked. That only meant that this weirdo believed what he was saying was true, not that it actually was.
Delusion would take care of that, and would explain so much.
Yet, as he turned to look at Belladonna with a ’would you get a load of this guy’ smirk and chuckle, he stopped mid sentence at her expression. She was wincing, in the way that she only did when she was trying to figure out the best way to tell him something that would annoy him.
Like that time when she was young and had accidentally spilled soda all over his PC when they were younger. Or the time she had left a six inch long scratch on his car when she borrowed it. Or... Well there were a lot of times it happened, so it was a look he was unfortunately used to and immediately recognised.
"What? What did you do this time?" Saige grumbled sternly, his face sinking into an angry dad glare.
"Well you see... as it turns out, that isn’t exactly true." Belladonna said with a pained winced, before laughing nervously.
"Have any of you been experiencing any headaches lately, maybe even just little ones that don’t want to go away? I mean it should be around the right time, right?"
She directed the second question to Revenant, who thought over the timeline in his head before nodding.
The other party members frowned, wondering what headaches had to do with anything, before slowly Vestra, who had stopped singing the theme song to listen to Revenants story, raised her hand.
"I uh... I have. Just a little one."
"Sure, I guess I have. Although it’s nothing unusual." Saige admitted with a sigh and a shrug, waiting to see where this was going. Lilith shook her head though, having not experienced anything like that in the slightest.
"Yeah, me too actually. It’s been annoying me for the last few days, but I just took some painkillers for it. Throbs like crazy no matter what though, I feel like my head is about to split open."
Figg admitted with a laugh, rubbing the back of his head.
Belladonna and Revenant glanced at each other, sharing a knowing look. Figg was much further along than the others, it seemed.
"Your plants must be growing good, huh Figg?" Belladonna said with a smirk as she turned to him, asking the question completely out of nowhere.
However Figg’s face immediately lit up, not caring about the randomness of the question as he finally got to talk about his beloved babies.
"Oh yeah! Finally! I mean I knew I would do it eventually, but they are all blooming. I guess my black thumbed curse is finally gone! I knew it wasn’t a waste of money to drop so many paychecks on those potted plants! If only they had done it before now I could have-
Wait... How did you know that they were growing well?"
Belladonna smirked again, shaking her head with a laugh before standing up straight.
"Guys, let me tell you a little something about the very real thing known as magic, and how you too can become as wonderful as me."
