Chapter 205: Since No One Is Going, Then I’ll Go
But having lived two lives, she was exceptionally sensitive to the approach of danger.
Her sixth sense told her that a great danger was waiting for her.
Annabelle Linton was walking along, lost in thought, when she suddenly heard a commotion up ahead.
「In the dean’s office.」
The dean was furious. "Are you kidding me?! The slots were already confirmed. The people from the other hospitals are leaving today, and now you’re telling me you can’t go? Do you have any idea how serious the consequences of this are?"
A female doctor in her thirties lowered her head, her face a mask of guilt and distress. "Dean, I’m so sorry. You know I’m a single mother. My child was supposed to stay with her grandparents, but my father took a fall yesterday. My mom has to go to the hospital to look after him, so she can’t possibly take care of Dottie."
"Besides, I’ll be gone for such a long time. My child... there’s just no way. I know the trouble I’m causing the hospital, but please try to understand. If there’s no other choice, how about this? I’ll forfeit the travel allowance. I don’t need the job. Can I just resign? I’ve already lost my husband; I can’t lose my daughter, too..."
"What the hell kind of bullshit are you spouting!
" The dean was so mad he slammed a book from his desk onto the floor. "I don’t give a damn about your daughter! If you wanted to resign, why didn’t you do it sooner?! For this trip to Nordmark, each hospital must send five people. The country is building its relationship with Nordmark this year—this is an official directive! Where am I supposed to find someone now?!"
"There’s nothing I can do..." The doctor just kept crying, seeing no other way out.
"What’s going on?" Annabelle Linton asked calmly as she walked in.
When the dean saw Annabelle Linton, he explained the situation in a tone of utter frustration.
Basically, a new type of virus had recently appeared in Nordmark, and medical personnel were needed to study it.
The country was currently collaborating with Nordmark and needed to strengthen ties, so it was mandated that each hospital send five doctors.
If they didn’t, the hospital would no longer receive any government-sponsored funding for expenses, equipment, and the like.
The doctors from the other hospitals had already departed, but this doctor from their hospital could no longer go because of her child.
Annabelle Linton thought for a moment, then asked, "How long is the assignment?"
"A minimum of three months. The maximum is indefinite—maybe half a year, maybe a full year."
’Three months?’
Annabelle Linton raised an eyebrow at that.
’This actually sounds like good news.’
’Nordmark is a great place.’
’In three months, Ryan will have pretty much graduated from high school. When that time comes, I’ll divorce Leona Grant and go live in Nordmark.’
’For one, it’ll be a good way to clear my head. For another, it’ll give me a chance to acclimate.’
The corners of Annabelle Linton’s lips curved into a slight smile. "Alright then. Since no one else can go, I’ll go."
"Really?" the single-mother doctor asked, overjoyed.
The dean’s face lit up for a moment, but he quickly remembered something. "Well... Annabelle, it’s not really appropriate for you to go. Young Master Grant is still in the hospital. What happens if he comes looking for you after you’ve left?"
After all, he would rather offend the entire country than offend Leona Grant.
Offending the country meant, at worst, losing out on sponsorship funds.
Offending Leona Grant... that was practically a death wish.
Annabelle Linton rolled her eyes, speechless. "He recovered a while ago, okay? He’s being discharged today."
"Is that so..." The dean was hesitant. "No, that won’t do. I need to make a call, just to be safe."
The dean had just pulled out his phone when he heard Annabelle Linton say airily, "Oh, what a hassle. Never mind, don’t call. I won’t go."
