Chapter 43 : Chapter 43
Chapter 43: What Are You Looking At?
“What is love, exactly? Do you truly understand it?”
“It is not something you can obtain by killing people.”
“You must learn to approach actively and take the initiative. Just like I said earlier—once a foundation exists, everything becomes simple. As long as you take that most crucial first step, you should already be eighty percent successful.”
“A human heart… can be vast, but when it is small, it can hold only one person.”
The rabbit-masked woman crouched on the rooftop, her gaze sweeping across every figure in the alley. Her eyes were deep and unreadable. What she said was simple and easy to understand.
Yet the alley had fallen into an eerie silence. No one spoke. Every pair of eyes stared fixedly at the rabbit-masked woman.
Perhaps they were all thinking about how to kill her.
But at the same time, they had indeed listened carefully to her words.
Just as the rabbit-masked woman had said, did they truly understand emotions?
They were completely at a loss when it came to how to capture Lu Liangting’s heart. The old saying still applied—if you asked them to kill someone, they were absolute professionals. But if you asked them how to make a man fall in love with them, that truly left them helpless.
If not for that, they would not have gathered here in the first place.
At the beginning, they had not even known each other’s identities. Because of Lu Liangting, they had hardly fought one another.
After gathering together, a few simple exchanges had already revealed the troubles in everyone’s hearts.
Since none of them knew how to pursue Lu Liangting, they had decided it would be better to work together first and eliminate everyone else. Once the number of competitors decreased, they could slowly figure out a strategy. After all, by then they would have plenty of time—and Lu Liangting would not be able to escape anyway.
“Since no one wishes to speak, I will not say much more. You are all intelligent people.”
“That is all I will say. There is only one Lu Liangting, and you each have only one goal. That means only one of you will survive. If you do not start trying harder, your hope will not merely be slim—it will cease to exist entirely.”
“Oh, and one more thing. While focusing your attention on Lu Liangting, do not forget that he is not the only protagonist.”
After saying that, the rabbit-masked woman vanished from the rooftop.
Yet her voice lingered in the hearts of the girls for a long time.
It was true—they did not understand emotions.
And striking first really did seem like a reasonable idea.
If they could secure a place in Lu Liangting’s heart, approaching him later would be easy. The relationship would naturally develop quickly.
There was only one thing that felt a little strange.
Could a man’s heart truly hold only one woman?
In their previous lives, they had possessed many, many women. In every mission world, there have been plenty of them.
Because of the rabbit-masked woman’s words, the atmosphere in the alley gradually began to develop in a very strange direction.

At that moment, Lu Liangting had no idea that because of someone’s speech, he would soon face a terrifying future.
Right now, he was searching the corridor for Zhao Mingyue.
After learning through a messaging app that Zhao Mingyue had already returned home, he finally let out a sigh of relief. Looking at Li Nan lying on the floor, he decisively called the police and the hospital emergency line.
Tonight was destined to be another sleepless night.
Within less than a week, Lu Liangting had called the police twice at the same location. The first time, someone died.
This time was not light either.
Someone had gone insane and lost even the most basic awareness.
When the leading officer saw that the caller was Lu Liangting again, he could not help but shake his head.
Why is it you again, kid?
The corridor soon quieted down.
After all, Li Nan had not died—he had merely lost consciousness and become a vegetable. That was an entirely different level compared to a murder case.
Inside Room 404, Zhao Mingyue listened to the commotion outside. Only after confirming that everyone had left did she speak.
“Bai Yu, about Xiaolian… we should resolve that situation as soon as possible. It feels very dangerous. If it were not for you tonight, we would have died there.”
A red-clothed Fierce Ghost—especially one that had lost control—would cause endless trouble if left unresolved.
Previously, the old landlord had been able to confine her between the fourth and fifth floors. Now that the old landlord was gone, given enough time she could roam throughout the entire building.
“Yes. She must indeed be dealt with.”
“Mm… by the way, what exactly happened tonight between Lu Liangting and Li Nan?”
“Li Nan is merely someone’s pawn. That person wants to kill you, and also has plans involving Lu Liangting, but they will not kill him.”
“A pawn?”
“Do not ask too many questions. You will encounter her soon enough. Now go get some rest.”
The entire night remained quiet. Nothing else happened.
However, Zhao Mingyue once again found herself unable to sleep.
That other world was interfering with her life—even though she had not actively accepted any missions.
The key point was that it had only been a few days since she first came into contact with that world.
The next day, after arriving at school, Zhao Mingyue kept watching Li Nan’s seat.
Would Li Nan enter the classroom like before, sit down in his seat, and begin sleeping or playing with his phone?
The answer was no.
Even by the second class period, he still had not appeared. The teacher seemed to already know something. Looking at the empty seat, the teacher said nothing and continued teaching.
Zhao Mingyue quietly unwrapped a piece of chocolate from her desk and slipped it into her mouth.
Unfortunately, the teacher suddenly began calling on students to recite—and it just happened to be her turn.
“Bai Yu, do you think Li Nan really will not come back?”
Standing outside the classroom as punishment, Zhao Mingyue whispered in her heart to Bai Yu.
“Of course not. The black shadow on his body had a symbiotic relationship with him. Since the shadow has died, Li Nan naturally cannot survive either. Even if he remains alive, he will never regain consciousness.”
“Then who killed the shadow inside him…”
Just as Zhao Mingyue finished asking, a graceful figure walked down the corridor.
Her steps were slightly drifting and irregular, yet rather than appearing careless, each step seemed to carry a mysterious charm.
The girl wore a black school uniform. Her hair was tied into two buns on either side of her head. Her face was delicate, her phoenix-like eyes cold and narrow, and her expression completely emotionless.
She held a medical book and a black crystal cup in her hands. Walking into the classroom opposite Zhao Mingyue, she handed the items to a young teacher with long curly hair who was sitting with one leg crossed over the other.
When the girl stepped back out and closed the door, Zhao Mingyue suddenly noticed that the young teacher inside had been staring at her—and even gave her a smile.
‘What a beautiful teacher. But dressing like that at school… is that really okay?’
After closing the classroom door, the bun-haired girl gave Zhao Mingyue a long, deep look. She snorted coldly and turned to leave.
Zhao Mingyue was left utterly confused.
“What kind of look was that? And what was that snort for? Do I even know her?”
“You may not know her,” Bai Yu replied calmly. “But Lu Liangting does.”
