Chapter 690 - 356: Preparation 2
Once she left, Juhua looked at Qin Feng and Yun Ying and asked softly, "How is it?"
Qin Feng pondered for a moment. "I’m afraid we’ll have to do it early. You won’t make it to your due date." He and Yun Ying exchanged a look, and he nodded gently.
Before Juhua could answer, Yun Ying smiled, sat on the edge of the bed, and took her hand. "Juhua, don’t be afraid. My senior brother and I are much more skilled now. We can definitely ensure your safety."
She was full of confidence, making her words of comfort much more certain. Qin Feng also smiled and nodded at Juhua.
Juhua smiled at Yun Ying. "When was I ever afraid? You’re the one who’s scared, aren’t you? I’m telling you, when the time comes, you’d better be extra careful. Don’t go leaving a pair of scissors or something inside my stomach..."
Although Yun Ying knew she was joking, her eyes still widened, and she nearly cried out in shock. ’That’s just unthinkable!’
Qin Feng asked hesitantly, "Does that sort of thing happen?"
Juhua smiled, nodded, and said slowly, "I trust you. It’s not just your medical skills I believe in, but more so your medical ethics. You’re so careful and meticulous, and that puts my mind at ease! Otherwise, if it were some arrogant person, I would never dare entrust my life to him, no matter how brilliant his skills were."
Qin Feng nodded solemnly. "We’ll spend the next few days preparing, and then we’ll perform the surgery on you. You need to tell Huai Zi. We definitely can’t do it without his help, or your mother-in-law and your own mother will get suspicious."
Juhua nodded. "I’ll tell him in a bit. Don’t worry about it, there won’t be any problems."
Qin Feng said, "I’ll perform acupuncture on you first to improve your circulation. That should help you sleep for a while."
Yun Ying hurried forward to help Juhua lie down. After a flurry of activity, once Juhua was sound asleep, the two of them stepped out of the room.
Yun Ying sighed. "So it has to be a caesarean. Senior Brother, you should be the one to tell Zhang Huai. Let him know what to expect, and it’ll save Juhua the trouble of explaining. He cares so much about Juhua, and with Aunt Liu’s case as a precedent, he probably won’t object—not that objecting would do any good, anyway."
Qin Feng nodded. "I’ll get Heipi to find him and bring him back. You help get Aunt Liu settled in."
The two of them then went their separate ways to get busy.
The men of the Zhang family were harvesting corn. Before Heipi could even go look for Zhang Huai, he was already back, hurrying into the courtyard with a large load of cobs on a shoulder pole that trembled under the weight.
He was overjoyed to see Qin Feng and the others. Setting down his load, he lifted the cloth from around his neck to wipe away his sweat and said, "Doctor Qin, you’re back! I came back a moment ago and saw Juhua looking exhausted. I was worried she wasn’t feeling well and was planning to ask you to come take a look as soon as I dropped off this load."
Qin Feng smiled. "Don’t worry, I’ve already given her acupuncture, and she’s sleeping now. Come, Huai Zi, I need to talk to you about something." With that, he turned and went into the house.
"Alright!" Zhang Huai replied quickly. He turned to see Liu Heizi and his father already helping to lay out the corn cobs to dry. He smiled and said, "Uncle Liu, you two just arrived. Please, take a rest. I’ll get to these later."
Liu Heizi gave an honest smile. "Don’t mind us, Boss. You go on and tend to your business. This is nothing, Heipi and I will have it done in a moment."
Seeing he was insistent, and anxious to hear what Qin Feng had to say, Zhang Huai didn’t argue further and entered the main hall. He saw Qin Feng sitting at the table and sat down opposite him with a smile. First, he poured a cup of warm tea from the large teapot on the table and gulped it down in one go. Then he said to Qin Feng, "What is it, Doctor Qin? Go ahead and tell me. I’m listening."
Qin Feng then quietly explained Juhua’s situation to him in full detail.
Huai Zi didn’t lose his composure, but the hand he rested on the table trembled slightly. He asked in a deep voice, "Are you saying that Aunt Liu gave birth by having her belly cut open?"
Qin Feng nodded. "Yes. If we hadn’t done it then, both mother and child would have died. We wouldn’t have been able to save either of them. They had waited far too long. Luckily, I made my decision and acted immediately. Otherwise, even with the surgery, we would have only pulled out a stillborn infant—the baby was on the verge of suffocating!"
Zhang Huai nodded, then asked a series of detailed questions—some about Liu Heizi’s wife, some about Juhua, and some about the surgery itself.
Qin Feng answered each one, showing no impatience with his layman’s questions. He did his best to explain everything clearly using simple, everyday language.
An hour later, Huai Zi let out a long breath. "Let’s do it then," he said to Qin Feng. "We’ll have to trouble you and your sister, Doctor Qin. Juhua and I don’t know how to thank you—saving a life isn’t a debt that can be repaid with a few words. I know you took a huge risk helping Aunt Liu. You even gave her Silver and supplements from your own pocket. If you hadn’t saved her, your reputation would have been destroyed. So rest assured, Juhua and I both trust you. We’ll do whatever you say."
Qin Feng was surprised by how readily he agreed and asked with a smile, "You’re not worried? You’re willing to let me perform this surgery on Juhua?"
Huai Zi shook his head. "I’ve known something was off for a long time. Doctor Yun follows Juhua around all day, you gave her some special medicine, and you’re always checking her pulse. You don’t do all that when you examine other men’s pregnant wives. I could also tell that you were a bit unsure before. But now that you’ve done this surgery once for Aunt Liu, you sound much more confident today. So what is there for me to worry about? Aunt Liu is alive and well, isn’t she? To refuse to let you operate would be to treat Juhua’s life lightly, wouldn’t it? You’ve only done this once for Aunt Liu, so I imagine you’re still not that practiced. I wouldn’t feel right letting Doctor Yun perform the surgery on Juhua alone. Isn’t it better if you both do it together?"
Qin Feng couldn’t help but laugh. He hadn’t expected the man to be so observant. ’It’s true, I’m not as hesitant as I was, and it must show in how I speak and act.’ He also silently praised Zhang Huai for being able to disregard conventional opinions and prioritize Juhua’s safety.
Huai Zi added, "It’s not enough just to tell me. It’ll be nearly impossible to hide this from Qingmu. I’ll make the arrangements for that. Doctor Qin, you don’t need to think about any of that. Just focus on how to successfully perform this surgery for Juhua. Let us take care of Aunt Liu, too. I can see Yun Ying is very busy."
Qin Feng relaxed as well, smiling. "It’s no trouble. We should be the ones to look after her. We need to record every detail of her condition, and I need to adjust her medicine and prescriptions based on how her body is recovering. But she’s already doing much better now."
Zhang Huai suddenly understood and was filled with admiration. He then told Qin Feng to just let him know if there was anything special they needed for food, as the Liu family’s wife was now a patient of the utmost importance. (To be continued.
