Chapter 216: Stealing Chickens
Bad news travels fast. After the incident at the breakfast shop, the rumor that Cara Preston had a man on the side spread like wildfire to every corner of the compound.
After Cara Preston left, she felt terribly aggrieved. ’That guy was clearly a punk,’ she thought. ’What a blind idiot. He ignored a great beauty like Vera Xavier and decided to harass me instead. He must be blind!’
However, after her silent tirade, she felt a little smug. ’From the look on his face, he must have thought I was prettier than Vera Xavier.’ She glanced at her reflection as she passed a shop window.
The young woman in the reflection was delicate and fair-skinned—quite beautiful, indeed.
She let out a small, smug huff. The incident inexplicably boosted her confidence. ’I’m this beautiful. Nathaniel Nathan will definitely like me when he sees me. Vera said he’s back. I have to find a way to see him after school this afternoon!’
When Vera Xavier got to school, she reached up to rub her temples and silently cursed Nathaniel Nathan. ’It’s all that bastard’s fault for sneaking into my room in the middle of the night. It made me lie awake half the night thinking about us, and I barely slept a wink.’
She was exhausted and let out a big yawn. Shane Caldwell, who was beside her, commented sarcastically, "Yawning this early in the morning? What were you up to last night, robbing graves?"
"None of your business!" Vera shot him a sidelong glance.
Shane Caldwell scoffed. Vera turned to Shirley Forrest and asked, "Did you bring any medicated balm today?"
Shirley Forrest was prone to dizzy spells, so she usually carried a small tin of medicated balm in her bag.
Shirley Forrest took the balm out of her schoolbag, only to see it was empty. "It’s all gone. I’ve been so busy with school lately that I forgot to buy more."
Vera had no choice but to drop it, wondering if she should go out and buy some during the long break between classes.
Shane Caldwell glanced at her, then left the room. He rushed back into the classroom right as the bell was ringing and thrust a tin of medicated balm at Vera. "Found this on the street just now. You can borrow it."
Vera saw that the medicated balm was clearly brand new and unopened. She said calmly, "You’re pretty good at ’finding’ things. Why don’t you go out and ’find’ another one?"
Shane Caldwell: "..."
Vera pulled two dollars out of her bag and placed it on his desk. "Thanks!"
Shane Caldwell stared at the two dollars, and his good mood vanished. He felt as if his innermost secret had been laid bare. His face flushed red, and he roughly pushed the money back toward her. "I told you, I found it on the street! I don’t need your money!"
Vera never liked being indebted to anyone, least of all someone as proud as Shane Caldwell. She simply tossed the money into his desk and said nonchalantly, "Then just pretend you found two dollars on the street."
Shane Caldwell: "..."
He wanted to say something else, but Juliana Taylor walked in carrying her lecture notes, so he had to let it go. Still, Shane was fuming internally. ’This Vera Xavier’s brain is wired completely differently from other girls’! ’She obviously knew I bought the balm for her, so why did she have to handle it like that?’
Cara Preston came in right behind Juliana Taylor. She looked like she had run all the way to school; she was panting, her face was flushed, and she looked rather disheveled.
The moment Cara Preston entered the classroom, her eyes instinctively darted toward Vera Xavier, only to be met with a teasing look. Cara’s heart sank. ’Somehow,’ she thought, ’I just know Vera was behind what happened this morning!’
And it had to be said, for once, she was right.
PS: Mini-Theater:
Vera: Young Master Nathan, I turned down a super handsome guy for you. Don’t I deserve some praise?
Nathaniel Nathan (gives her a kiss): If that’s not enough, I can always pin you down and kiss you some more.
Author: *Whimper* Poor me, I don’t have a handsome guy to kiss! Please comfort me with your votes!
