Chapter 662 - 588: Curry’s Depression
The next day, Chen Yu’s team met with the coaching staff.
The Randolph trade was still up in the air; John Nash was reluctant to trade him away.
Besides, there were no suitable trade partners.
He decided to put it on the back burner for now. He thought the current plan of moving him to the five-position was working well enough. They would see how things went for half a season and could make a decision before the trade deadline.
Chen Yu’s team naturally had no objections.
Secondly, everyone unanimously agreed to move Darius Miles to the bench.
The coaching staff also felt that the harm caused by Miles’s style of play outweighed the benefits. His defense was truly terrible.
In comparison, Iguodala was more balanced on offense and defense.
Then there was the issue of shooting too many three-pointers, which Chen Yu’s team brought up. It felt a bit like they were shooting threes for the sake of shooting threes.
Speed was the goal, but speed wasn’t just for chucking up threes.
Many of their shot selections were still too hasty.
Drives, mid-range shots, floaters, and inside-out plays could also lead to quick scores. There was no need to force three-pointers.
Take yesterday’s game, for example. The whole team chucked up 37 three-pointers in a single game. It was simply unbelievable.
Taking threes wasn’t the problem, but they needed higher efficiency.
If their threes weren’t efficient, why not get closer and take a two-pointer?
The coaching staff agreed. Rivers also believed the team was taking too many threes with poor shot selection.
Ultimately, it was a matter of tactical practice. They would have to take it slow and build chemistry over time.
After the meeting, having received the coaching staff’s requests, Chen Yu’s own team had to hold a meeting to discuss, formulate, and adjust their training plans.
On the way out, Old Curry suddenly took a couple of steps forward and pulled Chen Yu aside.
"Chen, have you been in contact with Stephen recently?"
Chen Yu shook his head.
The playoffs on the show had been ongoing.
The first round had ended several days ago.
Although their first-game upset hinted at a potential "eighth-seed miracle," it was a shame that Curry’s team was ultimately eliminated.
Still, it was an honorable defeat, as the series went to a fifth game before a winner was decided.
"Is he having mental health issues?" Chen Yu asked, observing Old Curry’s expression.
After fighting hard for three or four months only to be eliminated, it was entirely possible he’d be hit hard by it.
Moreover, as far as Chen Yu knew, a large part of the reason for their loss in the final game was Curry himself.
Eric Gordon’s Little Horse Team had first adapted to Grand Canyon’s off-ball screens with faster defensive switching.
Then, they targeted Curry on defense, creating numerous isolation plays for Gordon.
Gordon could physically overpower Curry.
In the last game, he exploded for 37 points, completely dominating Curry.
’He lost the series because of his performance, feels ashamed, and thinks he let his teammates down. It’s plausible he’s having a genuine psychological issue.’
Old Curry sighed and nodded. "Chen, nothing gets past you. You’re right. After losing the series, I feel like he’s become completely depressed."
"Chen, he trusts you, and you understand psychology. Could you talk to him for me?"
He had called and talked to Curry himself, but Curry kept saying he was fine.
But the more he insisted, the more Old Curry felt something was wrong, which was why he had sought out Chen Yu.
"Of course, no problem," Chen Yu nodded.
After a moment’s hesitation, however, Chen Yu added, "Dale, the Stephen I know has always been a hard worker who never gives up easily. I don’t believe a small setback like this will be enough to break him."
’What kind of environment did Curry grow up in?’
’Ever since he was a kid, people doubted him because of his height, thinking he wasn’t suited for basketball.’
’But he persevered, always working hard. He went from not being accepted by school teams to becoming the best player in the entire school. He’s not the type to be defeated by difficulties.’
"Don’t worry. As it happens, I’m planning to head back to Phoenix tomorrow. I’ll talk to him then."
Chen Yu patted Old Curry’s arm.
With a team in place, the work could proceed step-by-step. Chen Yu couldn’t possibly oversee everything all the time.
Besides, he had business to attend to back there.
Jamie King!
After nearly two years, tens of millions in funding, and enough effort to give him a visceral reaction at the mere sight of a pork bone, the guy’s cartilage regeneration project had finally achieved a major breakthrough. He had successfully prepared a usable cartilage scaffold.
The next step was to conduct a clinical trial surgery, and Chen Yu needed to go back to oversee it.
If this technology proved effective, it would provide a near-perfect solution to the problem of cartilage wear and tear.
Microfracture surgery had many problems. If not for the effects of his system, it wouldn’t have been nearly as effective.
Therefore, in the long run, a more advanced technology was necessary.
When combined with the system’s effects, the treatment results would be even better for athletes with higher demands.
The next day, after arranging the work on his end, Chen Yu returned to Phoenix.
At the clinic, Chen Yu, Jamie, and representatives from the Eli Lilly Company finalized the plan for the clinical trial surgery.
They also took the opportunity to hash out the details regarding patents and equity, signing the necessary documents.
The Eli Lilly Company would be responsible for all future project investments, so their equity had to be guaranteed. As the lead researcher, a portion of the profits also had to be secured for Jamie.
The technology would require further updates and iterations, which meant he needed to continue his research.
After sorting everything out and returning to his office, Chen Yu slapped his forehead as he remembered about Curry. He made a call and summoned Curry to the clinic.
Upon seeing Chen Yu, before he could even speak, Curry asked tentatively, "Sir, did my father come see you?"
Chen Yu was slightly taken aback, then smiled and nodded. "Stephen, your father is very worried about you."
Curry looked exasperated. "I know, but I’m really fine."
He hesitated for a moment. Only after Chen Yu promised not to tell his parents did he reveal the reason for his gloomy mood these past few days.
"So, you’re in a bad mood because your girlfriend wants to break up with you?" Chen Yu said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Curry nodded glumly.
For the past few months, he had been filming the show, busy with training and games. Even though the team was based in Phoenix, he rarely got to see his girlfriend.
Because of this, his girlfriend felt that he wasn’t paying enough attention to her and wasn’t considerate enough, so she chose to break up with him.
Curry nodded, looking troubled. "Actually, I don’t even know if we’ve broken up. I call her and try to see her, but she ignores me. Also, I don’t think that’s the real reason she wants to break up. Sir, there’s always this white kid around her... Do you think she likes him instead?"
"Stop!"
Chen Yu held up a hand, cutting off the rambling Curry.
’I’ve got a mountain of things to deal with. I don’t have time to worry about your teenage relationship drama.’
However, just as Curry was opening the door to leave, he suddenly stopped and turned his head. "Sir, I read online that there’s a method to break your bones to make you taller. Is that real?"
Chen Yu froze, surprised. "Why would you even think of something like that?"
’Using osteotomy for heightening... isn’t that a bit extreme?’
Curry pressed his lips together, his expression turning serious. He said, sounding dejected, "Filming this show, I’ve truly come to realize what an insurmountable gap a lack of height is. If I were just 10 centimeters taller, I feel like I could play so much better."
He knitted his brows, his eyes filled with unwillingness to accept his fate.
’It seems being eliminated in the first round did affect him after all, not like he claimed.’
’Gordon, at 1.9 meters tall, just kept hitting shots over him because of his height.’
"Come here!"
Chen Yu beckoned to Curry, motioning for him to stand in front of him.
Curry stepped forward, confused. Seeing Chen Yu just staring at him without saying a word, he thought he was about to get a lecture and couldn’t help but feel nervous.
Just then, Chen Yu suddenly patted Curry’s arm.
"Don’t worry. You’re still going to grow taller. I guarantee it," Chen Yu said with a grin.
Chen Yu had used the Eye of All-Seeing to examine him carefully. The epiphyseal plates in his major bones—the femur, tibia, and vertebrae—had not yet fully closed.
In other words, he still had room to grow.
Ten centimeters wasn’t just a dream.
