Chapter 207 - 157: Heading to China
The moment Trapattoni saw both of Baggio’s legs, he knew the extent of the man’s recovery.
For years, Trapattoni’s most vivid memory of Baggio was his right leg, the one ravaged by injuries. It was the leg that had brought Baggio so much glory, but every achievement had been paid for with pain and injury.
And now, that leg had recovered.
Throughout the visit, Trapattoni barely spoke to Baggio. In fact, he exchanged more words with Scholl than with him.
Just as he had with Juventus, Trapattoni had coached Bayern twice, so he was no stranger to Scholl.
The group didn’t stay at the clinic for long. After confirming Baggio’s condition, they left and returned to their hotel.
As soon as they were gone, Baggio turned and threw his arms around Chen Yu.
"Easy there," Chen Yu said, feeling like Baggio was trying to strangle him.
But Baggio didn’t let go, simply repeating "thank you" over and over.
Trapattoni had just told him that he would be called up for the next National Team training camp for their upcoming friendly match.
’After two years, I’m finally returning to the National Team.’
’The final roster isn’t set yet, but this is a fantastic start.’
Only Baggio himself knew the pain and torment he had endured to reach this day.
After a long moment, Baggio finally released Chen Yu and grinned. "Chen, I want to head home tomorrow. I need to play."
Brescia wasn’t just a place for him to coast into retirement; Baggio still had a soft spot for the club.
’The team is in a desperate fight to avoid relegation right now, and they need me.’
"Alright." Chen Yu thought for a moment before nodding in agreement.
In his current state, Baggio could be discharged at any time.
Baggio added, "So, on the 10th of next month, can you come to Italy to watch my match? And there’s Josep—he keeps mentioning you, saying he wants to thank you properly in person."
It was the end of January. If he returned to Italy and trained with the team for a week, he could, at the earliest, be ready for the Serie A match on February 10th—Round 22, Brescia versus Atlanta.
That’s why Baggio wanted to invite Chen Yu to Italy to watch his comeback match.
"I don’t think I can make it." Chen Yu thought for a moment and shook his head.
February 10th was the All-Star Game.
’If nothing goes wrong, I should be the team doctor for the West at this year’s All-Star Game.’
’Plus, with Jordan playing, this All-Star Game is getting a lot of attention. It wouldn’t be good for me to miss it.’
"As for Josep, he definitely owes me a big thank you." Chen Yu smiled at the mention of Guardiola.
The guy had narrowly avoided a disaster thanks to him.
Back when he was treating Ronaldo last year, Chen Yu had accidentally discovered that Ronaldo was taking a banned substance, Zinc and Magnesium Power.
Ronaldo had mentioned at the time that in European Football, especially in Serie A, a lot of players were taking similar substances.
Chen Yu had warned Guardiola about it back then.
And it was precisely because of that warning that Guardiola stopped taking those substances, especially Nandrolone.
Late last year, several players in Serie A were caught using Nandrolone.
Guardiola had dodged a bullet because of his warning. Otherwise, who knew what kind of punishment he would have faced.
"Alright then." Baggio sighed, resigned. He knew Chen Yu was busy. He then added, "Chen, when Ronnie made his comeback, he scored four goals. How many do you think I’ll get?"
’This guy is just fishing for a compliment.’
Chen Yu decided to play along and held up three fingers. "At least three."
"Haha, I think so too," Baggio said with a smug grin. Without experiencing it firsthand, no one could possibly understand just how healthy he felt now.
The next day, Baggio packed his bags and hastily departed from the United States.
Chen Yu didn’t waste any time either, immediately setting off for Cleveland.
He needed to examine Teylon Hill’s physical condition. The trade depended on it, so it couldn’t be delayed.
’If it’s just a torn meniscus, it shouldn’t be a major issue. I can perform a minimally invasive surgery to repair it with a couple of stitches. He should even be able to make it back for the playoffs.’
The Knights, for their part, were very enthusiastic about Chen Yu’s arrival.
Of course they were enthusiastic. It wasn’t every day a sucker walked right through the door. They had to treat him well to make sure the deal didn’t fall through.
At a local hospital, Chen Yu met Teylon Hill.
His first impression upon meeting the man wasn’t anything else—it was that he was ugly.
’A bit rude, perhaps.’
But even with league-renowned ugly players like Marion and Ewing on the Suns, after seeing Teylon Hill for the first time, Chen Yu could only conclude that they were all ugly in their own unique ways.
His face was gaunt, but his nose was massive and somewhat upturned, revealing two rather large nostrils. When he opened his mouth, a set of yellow teeth was on display.
The man seemed friendly enough, though. As soon as Chen Yu entered, he stood up, gave a slight nod, but didn’t speak, just standing there somewhat reservedly.
He waited until Chen Yu had finished speaking with the Knight’s General Manager, Jim Paxson, and looked over at him before breaking into a grin and saying hello.
Chen Yu chatted with him briefly before sending him off for his examination.
The basic procedures still had to be followed.
However, Chen Yu had already assessed his physical condition with the Eye of All-Seeing.
A lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. He’d had surgery—a simple suture of the meniscus.
Suturing a tear in the white zone like that wasn’t completely pointless, but it wasn’t very effective either. Over time, problems were bound to reappear.
But besides the meniscus issue, Chen Yu found a few other problems.
His right foot was also inflamed.
It looked like plantar fasciitis.
It wasn’t too severe. His attending physician had noted it in his medical records, using the phrase "under control" to describe the condition.
Beyond that, there were just the traces of various other minor injuries.
He was a blue-collar player in the paint, after all. He was constantly battling opponents down low, so getting injured was normal.
While waiting for the test results, Jim Paxson kept rambling on about how incredible Teylon Hill used to be, how he’d made the All-Star team, and so on.
It was true. Like Robinson, the guy had also been an All-Star once.
So from that perspective, he could indeed be considered an All-Star-caliber player.
But none of that was his concern.
Brian was the one who decided to make the trade. If he didn’t think it was a bad deal, what could Chen Yu say?
After the examination, Chen Yu sent Brian a two-word text—"All clear"—and then departed for Phoenix.
With Chen Yu’s confirmation of Hill’s physical condition, Brian no longer hesitated. He immediately reported it to the league and finalized the trade.
Having secured the coveted first-round pick, Brian didn’t rest on his laurels. He planned to find time before the All-Star Game to take a trip to China and see this Yao Ming with his own eyes.
He had arranged a three-day trip, which felt a bit rushed to Chen Yu.
Chen Yu had actually wanted to take the opportunity to stay in China for a few extra days to meet and exchange ideas with some Chinese doctors. But with only three days, there would be no time for that.
But on second thought, with the All-Star Game, the National Team’s friendly matches, and the season entering its second half, the team needed to push for playoff seeding.
’With a team full of veterans, problems were bound to pop up in the second half of the season. He needed to be there to keep an eye on them.’
’Then there was Trapattoni. He hadn’t been kidding; players would soon start arriving in the United States for rehabilitation.’
’He had so much on his plate. This might be his only window to go to China.’
On February 3rd, with all the arrangements made, the group boarded a plane to China.
