Chapter 157: Apex

The Hollow-Stag moved first.

It didn't charge.

It ran.

Muscles coiled beneath bark-plated hide as it wheeled around, hooves tearing through moss and roots in desperate retreat.

The Shard Serpent reached the same conclusion.

Its crystalline body vanished beneath the moss, burrowing into the earth with startling speed.

The fight was over.

There was only escape.

Seraphina frowned.

What had—

The forest convulsed.

The impact came without warning.

The ground lurched beneath her boots, throwing loose leaves into the air as something immense struck the clearing.

She never saw it descend.

One moment the Hollow-Stag was running.

The next...

it wasn't.

Her eyes searched instinctively.

Then she found it.

Held sideways between jaws so enormous the stag looked absurdly small.

For a heartbeat her mind refused to understand.

The antlers protruded from one side.

Its hindquarters from the other.

Then the jaws closed.

The chewing began. The sound reached her first.

A sharp crack. Another. Then dozens.

Bone breaking.

The stag's body folded inward.

Bark armour splintered.

Amber sap burst from the shattered plates—

followed immediately by blood.

Bright. Hot. Real.

Something pale slid between the monster's teeth.

Long.

Wet.

Her mind supplied the word anyway.

Intestines.

She wished it hadn't.

Some part of her kept identifying things.

Bone.

Muscle.

Blood.

As though naming them would somehow make them less real.

It didn't.

Her stomach lurched.

Acid burned the back of her throat.

She swallowed hard.

Nothing came up.

She had never watched anything die before.

Not really.

Games ended with loot. Reality kept going.

The creature chewed.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Each movement of its jaws produced another sickening chorus of snapping bone and tearing flesh.

Blood streamed from the corners of its mouth, dripping between serrated teeth onto the forest floor.

The smell reached her.

Copper.

Wet meat.

Burned resin.

Her throat tightened.

She couldn't look away.

A foreleg slipped free from the monster's mouth.

It twitched once.

Then the jaws closed again.

It disappeared.

The Hollow-Stag had never screamed.

There had been no time.

The Shard Serpent had flattened itself so tightly against the earth that its crystalline scales vanished beneath leaves and moss.

It wasn't hiding.

It was hoping not to exist.

The monster swallowed.

Its throat moved.

The stag was gone.

Only blood remained across the roots.

The creature lowered its immense head.

A long, black tongue slid lazily between rows of serrated teeth, gathering scraps of flesh still clinging there.

Seraphina stared.

Every instinct she possessed had collapsed into a single command.

Don't move.

She stopped breathing without meaning to.

The Phoenix Core surged.

Not in fear.

In outrage.

Heat flooded her chest, racing through her veins before she could suppress it.

Retreat was incomprehensible.

Something had dared proclaim itself the apex.

Every instinct carried within the ancient fire answered with the same certainty.

Burn.

Rise.

Rule.

It did not understand retreat.

It did not acknowledge larger predators.

It recognised only challenge.

Show it.

Heat gathered behind her sternum.

She forced the heat back down before it escaped.

Her hands trembled despite herself.

No, not yet.

Pride was negotiable.

Survival wasn't.

Heat shimmered around the creature, distorting the forest behind it.

Not flame.

Presence.

The surrounding mana bent toward it, drawn inward as though gravity itself had become hungry.

Only now did she truly see it.

It stood above the undergrowth with impossible ease, its broad back brushing the lower canopy.

Dark scales.

Stone plates veined with ember-red light.

Six limbs.

Foreclaws thicker than tree trunks.

A head so broad it barely seemed possible for a living creature.

She knew it.

Not from this world.

From another.

From thousands of hours behind a screen.

Stonehide Horror.

One of the Apex Horrors.

Heartflare Apex.

Recognition arrived before understanding.

It didn't belong here.

Heartflare was basalt.

Lava rivers.

Ash storms.

Black stone hot enough to glow beneath your boots.

Sprigroot was moss.

Fern.

Ancient trees.

The two ecosystems did not touch.

Knowing what it was should have made it predictable.

Instead...

it made her stomach drop.

Stonehide Horrors didn't leave the Apex.

They never had.

...

Unless...

Her gaze swept across the forest.

The mana was wrong.

Denser than it should have been.

The Echo-Stone hadn't merely protected Hearthwood.

It had regulated mana.

Mana determined habitats.

Territory had never been defined by trees.

It had been defined by mana.

The Stonehide Horror hadn't wandered into the Fringe.

The Fringe had become suitable for a Stonehide Horror.

A chill spread across her shoulders.

The Heartflare Apex wasn't expanding.

The world was quietly becoming it.

Zones had never been places.

They had been descriptions.

Solo players avoided Stonehide Horrors.

Not because they were impossible.

Because they took too long to kill.

By the time one finally died, every guild nearby already knew exactly where you were.

Aeterra Online had reduced them to numbers.

Levels.

Damage tables.

Respawn timers.

None of those things had prepared her for this.

Games never showed blood.

They never let you hear bones breaking inside another creature's mouth.

They certainly never taught you what blood smelled like.

The monster turned.

It hadn't looked at her.

Not once.

She wasn't prey.

She wasn't a threat.

She wasn't important enough to notice.

She had spent years believing she understood how the game worked.

Reality corrected her.

The Stonehide Horror swallowed.

Silence returned.

The Shard Serpent did not move.

The silence pressed against her ears.

Neither did the Horror.

Its nostrils widened.

It inhaled.

Slowly... one immense foreclaw swept aside moss and roots.

The serpent exploded upward in desperate panic.

It never cleared the ground.

The jaws closed.

When they opened again...

nothing remained.

The immense head lifted.

Its nostrils widened again.

It tasted the air.

Then it turned toward the deeper forest.

For a long moment... nothing happened.

Then it moved.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Without another glance at the clearing, it turned and strode deeper into the forest.

As though it had already found its next hunt.

Seraphina felt the blood drain from her face.

She tried to move.

Her knees refused the instruction.

Nothing happened.

Apparently her body had reached a conclusion without consulting her.

The Phoenix Core disagreed.

The ancient flame pressed harder beneath her sternum once more, hotter than before.

Not panic.

Defiance.

It pressed against her ribs like a second heartbeat.

Transform.

The thought wasn't words.

It was instinct.

Every challenge demanded an answer.

Predator met by a stronger predator.

Move.

Absolutely not.

They were surviving this first.

That thing had swallowed a Hollow-Stag in two bites.

The Phoenix Core would simply have to remain offended.

The heat receded reluctantly.

Not extinguished.

Waiting.

Only then did she truly see the clearing again.

Blood soaked into the moss where the Hollow-Stag had stood.

Amber sap glistened beside it.

The two spread together through the roots until she could no longer tell where one ended and the other began.

Ants emerged from beneath a fallen branch, indifferent to either.

For one impossible heartbeat, the clearing was silent.

It didn't last.

The scream tore through the trees.

The sound dissolved into crashing undergrowth.

Human.

Close.

Her body lurched before thought could catch up.

The first step almost sent her sprawling.

Her legs had forgotten how to run.

She ran.

Branches whipped across her face.

Roots tore at her boots.

Somewhere ahead, someone crashed through the undergrowth.

Behind them…

Something heavier followed.

She didn't know if she could save them.

She only knew she couldn't stop running.

Somewhere ahead…

The screaming started again.
