My Wife Is a Scientist

146. Wake up to reality, Emma

The morning light had barely begun to warm the kitchen when Emma came downstairs to greet her family. She surprised them as fast as she came into the room. Now, she was going to tell them. That is to say that her presence had increased.

She moved differently now. She moved in a real way. She shook the world as if it never existed.

Not with the sharp, defensive energy of last night’s war, but with something deeper a grounded steadiness that made the old wooden floorboards seem to sigh in recognition beneath her feet that could be felt easily. Her hair was still messy from sleep, but her eyes carried new depths: fertile soil after rain, desert fire tempered by starlight, and the quiet radiance of someone who had walked into darkness and chosen to return to the core of what life cannot be. The thing is, this order had taken another turn. The thing is, they were aware of it.

Karl looked up from his coffee first. Then Larisa. Who was looking at the garden. Then Freyja, who was quietly pouring tea as if she had always belonged at this table that we could actually have in mind. James lowered his newspaper slowly, sensing the shift before anyone spoke. In that way, this life could come to represent what it means to be alive.

Emma stopped at the edge of the kitchen, one hand resting lightly on the doorframe like she was anchoring herself to the house that had raised her. This anomaly had been born and yet it felt like nothing.

Emma: I had a dream, she said. Her voice was still hers sharp, familiar but it carried new undertones, like three rivers meeting in one current. Some men say an army of horse and some men say an arm on foot / and some men say an army of ships is the most beautiful thing / on the black earth. But I say it is / what you lov. Except it wasn’t just a dream. It was remembering.

She stepped fully into the room and looked at each of them in turn.

Emma: Karl… you ended Ragnarök last night.Eros once again limb-loosener whirls me sweetbitter, impossible to fight off, creature stealing up...I don't know what I should do: two states of mind in me… I mean, I know we can change it together. You shall tell me what I should do. The thing is, this cannot see what this may be. You gave the old gods an honest ending so something new could begin. I felt it even while I was sleeping. The house felt it. The whole damn city probably felt it.

Her gaze moved to Larisa slowly coming to see her super omega soul.

Emma:You’ve always been his anchor here. I would much prefer to see the lovelyway she walks and the radiant glance of her facethan the war-chariots of the Lydians or their footsoldiers in arms. The one who sat with him in the dark when the questions tried to swallow him whole. I see that now. I respect it. I always have, even when I was too angry to admit it. That should do it for you. Even so, it does not mean that they cannot take it under their wing.

Then to Freyja.

Emma: And you… you built yourself a room upstairs while we slept. You offered yourself to him because you saw the man who chose mercy over conquest.Blest as the immortal gods is he, The youth who fondly sits by thee,And hears and sees thee, all the while,Softly speaks and sweetly smile. I was ready to fight you for that. But the dream showed me something else. You’re not taking anything from me. You’re adding to what already exists here. It is not like you could do it or want to do it all because of other situation.

Finally, she looked at her father out of love and fraternity.

Emma: Dad… you raised two kids who think too much and feel too deeply. Mother dear, Ican't finish my weaving. You may blame Aphrodite. You did it in this stubborn little city that never asked for any of this. Thank you. This shall be their punishment. For it is good to love.

James nodded once, eyes shining with quiet pride and something like wonder.

Emma took a slow breath, then continued to let them know about it.

Emma: In the dream, three goddesses came to me. Asase Ya: the Earth Mother, the one who makes things grow even in dry ground. As for him who finds fault, may sillinessand sorrow take him. Anat : the warrior who fights for what she loves, fierce and unyielding. Inanna: the Queen of Heaven who descends into darkness and rises again, radiant and changed. That should be me in one.

She pressed a hand to her chest. A soft, warm glow pulsed beneath her palm not bright enough to blind, but undeniable. The air in the kitchen shifted. The old wooden table seemed to breathe. The cracks in the ceiling looked like living roots and constellations at once. Something came to see her from the distance. It was like something was trying to recognize her.

Emma: I am their reincarnation, ( Emma said simply.) All three in one. The ground that sustains. The war that protects. The love that descends and returns. I didn’t ask for it. But it’s been inside me all along every time I defended Karl when the world called him weird or broken. Every time I sat on the porch steps with him and kicked rocks instead of offering empty comfort. Every time I got angry because I was scared of losing the only brother I’ve ever had.”

She looked directly at Karl, eyes shining with new fire and old love.

Emma: I’m not declaring war on anyone anymore. Not on Larisa. Not on Freyja. Not even on the idea that your heart can hold more than one truth. Some say it's a force of cavalry, others of foot, others of ships, but I say that the most beautiful thing upon the black earth is whatever it is you desireI’m here to protect what deserves to grow. To fight when something tries to take what matters. And to love fiercely enough to descend into the dark and still come back shining. That is to say that we can be friend. I would love to marry… I mean, share you.

The kitchen was silent for a long moment.

Then Freyja stepped forward, graceful and radiant, and took Emma’s hands in hers to look at him with love

Freyja: Welcome back, sister( she said softly.) Asase Ya’s strength. Anat’s fire. Inanna’s light. You have always been here, waiting for the old stories to finish so you could remember.Eros limbslackener shakes me again- that sweet, bitter, impossible creature. I am honored to share this house and this heart with you. That is to say that no one could ever come close to what it should be.

Larisa stood and crossed the room. She didn’t speak. She simply pulled Emma into a quiet embrace the kind that said everything without needing words. When they parted, Larisa’s calm eyes were warm. Something came to touch her heart. It was beautiful, even divine. She needed to see it by herself.

Larissa: You’ve always been his shield, she said. Now you get to be something even stronger. Welcome to the new beginning.

James cleared his throat, eyes suspiciously bright.

James: Well, (he said, voice rough but steady, ) I always knew you were more than just my sharp-tongued daughter. Looks like the universe finally caught up. looked for love in you, and all I could see was you cherishing your nonexistent love for others in guilt and shame. You did not make me feel unloved, you just ripped apart my heart and shattered my soul into billions of those little insignificant particles that can not be seen, not even in the dying flames of a paper. That is to say that I cannot take seriously despite my unique love. I need you. You are my family.

Karl rose slowly from his chair. He crossed the kitchen and stopped in front of Emma. For a moment, the boy who had once solved every philosophical problem in this very house stood looking at the sister who had kicked rocks beside him on the porch steps.

Then he pulled her into a tight hug the kind they hadn’t shared since they were small.

Omega: I’m glad you’re awake, ( he whispered against her hair.) I never wanted to do any of this without you.

Emma hugged him back fiercely, the new power inside her humming like fertile soil and starlight and righteous fire all at once.

When they parted, she looked at all of them her brother, his two loves, her father — and smiled. It was still her smile, sharp and real, but now it carried the depth of three goddesses who had chosen to wake up in a small house in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Emma: So, ( she said, voice lighter but no less powerful,) who’s making breakfast? Because goddesses get hungry after remembering they’re goddesses.

Freyja laughedwarm, musical, full of spring.

Freyja: I’ll help. The room I built upstairs has a window that sometimes shows Vanaheimr’s fields. We can bring some of that light down here.

Larisa moved to the fridge with quiet grace.

James folded his newspaper completely and set it aside, a small, proud smile on his face.

Karl sat back down, watching them all with the quiet wonder of someone who had trained for a hundred million years in a room without time… only to come home and find that the story had grown even larger while he was gone.

The house creaked softly around them old floors, old walls, old memories now holding four extraordinary hearts instead of three.

And somewhere outside, Carlisle kept moving in its stubborn, ordinary way.

But inside, the new beginning had just gained another honest, powerful voice.

Emma Garrison reincarnation of Asase Ya, Anat, and Inanna had awakened.

And the honest new story of all the worlds was suddenly much brighter for it.

That what it seemed at first…. I guess.
