Chapter 246 – One Slice
Slash slice strike! The undead were many but, Carol, Katja, and Sarasa cut them down efficiently. Hecate supported the girls from the back together with Lythea, who was in reserve in case an unexpected threat appeared.
“Here! Anti-undead powder! This should help!” Ririna helped by tossing an improvised bag with glowing dust into the air that drifted to the others’ weapons.
The undead were tough to finish off. Even after receiving a handful of deadly blows, they could still get up and fight.
The weapons covered with Ririna’s dust changed that.
The fatal blows became truly fatal, and the undead started going down much faster. The wall of meat shields in front of Thivadi was slowly but surely thinning. A handful of new undead joined the fight from the harsh shadows every once in a while, but his cocky grin had less and less to hide behind.
“Ahahahahaha!” Thivadi spread his arms. “Not bad… It looks like you’re actually prepared to deal with my pawns. Perhaps I was too harsh when I said you were underestimating me…” He crossed his arms behind his legion while nodding. Not taking a single step. Just watching.
“Hah! You’re the one underestimating us!” Carol said. “Why aren’t you running yet?”
Since he was right there. Katja lunged forward. Gashes opened on her limbs at the same time that her sword cut more than five zombies in half. “Gyahahaha! Yes! Run! We’re here to kill you! Watch yourself!” She tried to push through and slash his neck, but no matter how high her momentum got, there were enough bodies to stop her blade in the middle of the army.
“Tsk…” She would just get surrounded at this rate. Katja jumped back and whittled his forces down with the others.
“Yeah yeah… I would assume that the fact that you’re here means you think you got a chance.” Thivadi said. “Even so, I’m prepared to come out on top in a clash against the heroine! Do you think you’re better than her? You don’t scare me one bit!”
“Then why are you hiding over there?” Sarasa stuck her tongue out. “Just take a step forward. It won’t hurt.”
“*Sigh…* You just don’t get it, do you?” He asked. “You’ve lost from the moment you’ve stepped foot in this hallway.” His loud laugh bounced off the walls. “I’ve seen the way you handled my subordinates downstairs. The two of you…” Carol and Katja. “You’ve got some power, I’ll give you that. But both your powers come at the cost of your life, don’t they? By the time you’re done with my undead, you’ll be ready to join them. The rest of you, I couldn’t care less. Even you, Lythea. You may be Velvet’s subordinate, but that won’t help you at all here.”
Only Katja and Carol register, huh? Hecate took that as a challenge as her scope locked onto Thivadi’s head. “You forgot someone.”
With the wall of bodies thinning, the bullet was able to fly without any obstacles. Thivadi was too busy enjoying their futile efforts and only noticed the bullet as it was right between his eyes.
“I don’t think I have.” His arm released a shockwave before the bullet stopped, caught by two of his fingers. “That rifle is certainly impressive. I have no idea where you got your hands on that, but these bullets are worthless.” With a flick, the bullet bounced across the ground. “They’re not even imbued with any magic. No better than a fly.”
There was a moment of silence after that shot.
Thivadi’s reflexes were good. Insanely good. He’s not just a weakling hiding behind some zombies. He’s the real deal…
“Oh? What are you doing now? Slowing down?” He asked. The girls adapted right away. Carol and Katja started holding back, saving some power for the fight against him. “I believe I told you to entertain me. If you don’t self-destruct as was part of my plan, there’s not any point in keeping my pawns around.”
He snapped his fingers, and the legion of zombies returned to the shadows. The few outside got cut to pieces, then it was just them and Thivadi.
“H- he’s going to attack! Watch out, everyone!” Lythea flapped her wings and flew ahead of everyone to match the enemy lunging forward. She held her javelin in front of her. With an open-hand thrust, as strong as metal, Thivadi hit the javelin and pushed Lythea back.
“Wh- what?! Why is he so fast?” Carol asked. She and Katja got a little closer to make it harder to get to the backline.
Lythea’s wings flapped again, and she stabilized. “He’s a vampire, of course he’s fast. They’re all very strong all around. Be careful.”
“He’s a vampire?!” Hecate raised her voice and stood up from her shooting stance.
“Eh- ehh…? Didn’t I mention it before?”
“No!” Carol said. “God… I can’t believe we’re only learning this now… And in such a stupid way! You’re going to pay for that, stupid succubus…”
“Eeek!”
Enemies and allies are both so scary…
“What the problem? Where did your confidence go? You were so eager to kill me and now look at you.” Thivadi grinned. “What’s the problem? Did you waste too much energy on my pawns? Good.”
Thivadi closed the gap to Katja, thrusting with his hand. Katja blocked. The other hand jabbed. She blocked. Then another jab, and another, and another. He was faster than she could handle, and he didn’t give her a chance to hurt herself.
“Kajta!” “Katja!”
Carol and Sarasa jumped in to help. Sarasa swung down both of her daggers, and Carol both of her swords. The real one and one of the last few she could create today.
“Hah! Out of my way!”
His two hands swung to the sides, deflecting all four blades.
“Gyahh!”
The impact was so strong that it sent both Sarasa and Carol to the floor. But from that gap, a deep cut in Katja’s offhand coated her blade with blood for a powerful swing.
Thivadi raised his hands to stop the blade. Her blow was more powerful than everything up to that point, and his knee dropped during his block. “That was impressive. If you had landed that before you wasted all your energy on my pawns, I could have been in trouble. But it’s too late now!” When her momentum stopped, Thivadi grabbed the blade and used his other hand to strike.
“Nghh… Let go!” Her sword is locked. She couldn’t defend against his thrust.
“Le- let her go!” Lythea threw the javelin, connected to her through a chain, at Thivadi’s side to free Katja.
“You finally decided to make a move. I was waiting for that!”
He stopped his attack to grab the large needle flying at him. “Huh? What?” He lifted Katja by her sword and tossed her over him. Once she was down, Lythea was next. Both hands on the javelin, he yanked the succubus chain and sent her crashing next to the other girl.
“Well… Looks like that’s it. Without Galene here, you never stood a chance.”
Thivadi stood up unscathed. His enemies downed. No one left to oppose him. The most their efforts accomplished were small cuts on his hands. All of which had already healed thanks to his vampiric powers.
“That’s the power of a vampire…” Ririna’s legs were trembling. “Wh- what now?”
“Stand back.” Hecate said. “If even Lythea can’t beat him, we have to leave. I’ll buy you time to call for Galene, so she can buy us time for us all to escape. I think that’s our only option at this point.”
“Hecate…”
“Just go! It’s the only way!” Hecate aimed her rifle and shot Thivadi again. The loud bang got Ririna’s legs moving again, and she ran out of the mansion.
Thivadi didn’t chase. He calmly swatted the bullet and watched them from afar. “And off she goes. You may think Galene can buy you time, but you’re mistaken about one thing. If Galene comes here, that will be the decisive battle between humans and demons. You may escape, but her defeat will be the blow that will seal humanity’s defeat. I wasn’t expecting it’d happen today, or that I’d be the one to claim our victory, but I won’t complain.” An eager grin spread on his lips. “Until she gets here, I’ll entertain myself by finishing you all off!”
“Guhh!”
Thivadi closed the gap instantly and attacked Hecate. If there was a good thing about Matching Weapons was that they were resistant even against the strongest of attacks. Hecate rotated her rifle to meet his hands, blocking his thrusts with the body and stock. Every blow resulted in a step back or the fabric of her dress getting torn. She barely held on.
“Ahahahahaha! I can’t believe you can block me with that thing! Seriously? Where did you get that?” The wider his smile, the quicker his hands. “Keep it up. I wanna see how long you can last!”
The sniper wobbled clumsily in Hecate hands. Every blow sent so many vibrations up her arms that she could barely control it anymore.
“Oh?” Thivadi said. The hand controlling the barrel slipped. It’s over. “That’s your limit, huh? Die!”
His hand hit the barrel, but with no support, it offered no resistance and let his hand continue toward her neck.
*click*
“Arghh!” Thivadi screamed in pain and jumped back. “What did you do? What was that?” He rubbed the gash in his neck. A few drops stained his hand, then the wound was gone.
Hecate stood back up. She raised her sniper, the bottom hand holding the barrel and the other the scope. The stock was next to her face, and from the bottom of the stock, a long, black, curving-inwards blade had extended. Her sniper resembled a scythe with the tip dripping with a few drops of Thivadi’s blood.
“This is my last resort…” Hecate’s hair stuck to her face. “I’m not really good with it, so I really wanted to get you with that cheap shot…”
With the flip of a small lever, Hecate managed to extend the blade during Thivadi’s attack. Her hand on the barrel had slipped, but the one on the center was still trying to block. When his attack pushed the barrel, the sniper rotated around the center, and the blade extending from the stock nipped his neck.
“An entertaining trick for sure.” Thiavdi said. “But even then, I’ve seen you move. I can tell you don’t have what it takes to defeat me.”
“Fufufu…” Her expression was blocked by her bangs. “I would hope not… Vampires are the strongest there is, aren’t they? I’d be disappointed if a normal human could beat them so easily.”
Hecate raised her head and reached for the blade. She scooped up the blood she bled to shed with a finger. “Humans aren’t supposed to be able to stand up to vampires. The only ones who can stand up to vampires are vampires. So I’ll do this!” Then brought it to her lips.
Usurp a vampire’s superiority.
“Guhh!”
The girls watched Hecate’s whole body pulse. The snipper fell to the floor at the same time that she fell to her knees, clutching her chest in pain.
“Hecate!”
