Chapter 01 (Part B) – Thrilling World
“Ouch!”
I fell on my butt.
What’s going on? Miyuki showed me that strange… hole, and then… pushed me in? It felt like I was free-falling for ages… How did I survive? And why did she do that? Makes no sense…
Did I accidentally fall in, and she was trying to pull me back? It happened so fast, maybe I saw it wrong…
No… I can’t deny it…
She pushed me in… I felt her hand on my back. What else could it have been? Why? We just met. Why would she want to do that to me? She doesn’t have a motive… Unless I really was that bad at conversation and made her hate me… *Sigh…* Don’t tell me that’s it… Seems believable, knowing myself.
Why did I decide to talk to her? Such a dumb idea… It’s not like me at all. Just because she’s pretty? Never experiment, never try new things, never take risks. That’s a saying I once heard trying to be some of the worst advice possible, so why does it sound true now? I should have done what I always do and gone home.
“Ughh… Too late to regret that now…”
Where even am I? I finally stood up and took a look around. Some kind of alley? Was the falling all some kind of dreaming? From the buildings around, I might still be near that parking lot. Did the ice cream make me hallucinate that hole?
Hm? “What’s that noise?”
I was in some kind of alley, and it was quiet, but the same couldn’t be said for the street up ahead. There were movements and voices from the people passing by. Dozens and dozens… Up and down the sidewalk. Every second. How? Why? I’ve never seen so many people walking around in Three Records at once… Was there some kind of catastrophe?!
No… That’s not it… Everyone knows exactly where they’re going, like it’s part of their routine. They bump, sidestep, and nod at each other, brush it off, and keep moving. It’s complete chaos, but there’s a certain order to it.
Where am I? This is not Three Records! Not the Three Records I know!
People in Three Records would never… Wait… People? I had to double-check. The people passing by, they’re…
They’re not human?!
Every single person either had demonic horns, wings, a tail, or a combination of those. Some that had none of those but were slightly see-through. Fluffy animal ears and tails for the last few that didn’t fit into any of the previous boxes.
Cosplayers? No… This composition feels familiar somehow… They’re the real deal… And that means… I looked up. The sky was covered with a mix of red and purple clouds, violently raging around a bright spiral of energy that cut through the formation. A single beam of light rising off in the distance was responsible for the spiral. A spiral so bright that even without the sun, everything was perfectly illuminated.
I see what’s going on… No wonder this seemed so familiar…
“I’m in another world right now…”
But not just any world… This is the world from a game… A game that I played… And this is a city controlled by what the game called demons. One of the places we go to during the story.
I can’t believe it…
Am I dreaming? There’s no way I’m actually in a different world right now. Is this what it feels like to be inside a game? The hole back there must have been some kind of portal then. Oh no… Why am I feeling giddy right now? I hate to say it, but… This is actually super exciting! Getting sent into the world of a game? That’s like a dream come true!
Even so… “What was this game again?” Couldn’t I have gone into a better game? I mean… I don’t even remember what this game is called. I remember the gameplay being kinda cool with a lot of build variety, but I ended up not following much of the story. At least the characters looked good, and there were some memorable environments. It was a bit of a cult classic from what I remember.
“But build variety means versatile, right? Maybe that’s better than something linear if I’m being forced to live here… Maybe this is a good game to be in…”
A girl with cat ears passed by alley, while I muttered to myself. Her ear twitched, then she turned her head to the side.
That was close… I immediately hid behind a container. She almost caught me… There was nothing in sight, so she kept walking. Good.
Okay… What do I do now? Can’t really afford to explore more, can I? The demons from the game aren’t exactly fond of humans, so if that girl had spotted me, I would have been in trouble. As cool as the idea may seem, actually ending up in a world like this is hella scary… Is there a way back? Where did I even fall from?
I searched around with my head, and I finally found it. Above me, the portal I came from was still there, but… Ughh… It’s too high… Completely out of reach.
The buildings on my sides have multiple stories, and it is kinda close to the top. It doesn’t go above them, but I’d have to find a way to get to the roof if I wanted to drop down. Not to mention, I’d have to land a jump from the roof. That’s damn scary! What if I mess it up?
Climbing is my only option left. There are some access stairs that could take me that high, but they don’t start from the floor. There’s a large trash container near me, some furniture, and other random crap lying around. Could I reach the stairs if I push some stuff around?
“*Sigh…* Don’t think I have any other choice.”
I went ahead with that idea, but pushing large things around in the middle of the street isn’t exactly easy. I’m not a particularly strong girl. I have to use my entire body to get any movement out of the bigger pieces. It wasn’t easy, but if that was it, I could handle it. The main problem is that it definitely wasn’t stealthy.
“Hey, you! What are you doing over there?”
“Ehh?!”
The voice of a horned man from behind made me jump. I’m in trouble now… The clothes he wore reminded me of a security guard. He probably hasn’t figured out that I’m a human yet, since he hasn’t attacked, but when he does… There’s a big street behind me with plenty of demons walking, same as if I ran past him. Those options are off the table. The only other way left is…
This way!
I ran left. Deeper into the alley. His uniform… He’s an enemy from the game! If he catches me, I’m dead. Running so suddenly was a surprise for him, and I got a nice head start.
The alley only gets more and more complicated, so if I keep making random turns, I might be able to lose him. I’m so lucky I always walk home from school… I’m not strong, but at least my stamina is good enough for me to run for a while.
“*Pant… pant…*” I did it… “I shook him off.” Where am I now? Another T-shaped intersection in the alley. I have two new options now, but both lead straight into big streets. This is a dead end then…
What now? I can’t go back while that guard is looking for me…
The alley this time was not surrounded by just tall buildings, as the side in front of me was just a wall surrounding some kind of complex. It’s so big… What is this place? A factory? I have to do something… Otherwise, I’ll be stuck here forever… Or, more likely, I’ll just die. No thanks…
I needed more information, so I quietly approached one of the big streets. I peeked around the corner, and there were two men standing in front of a gate wearing the same uniform as the one who chased me. Then I pulled back before getting caught.
I see now. This is where they work…
Do I just wait? The guard who was chasing me will have to go back eventually. I can try to reach the portal again when he’s gone. But this is strange… Why would a factory need guards? And is it so important that they even send people to patrol the nearby alleys? Just what is going on here…?
Ah! Wait a second… Those uniforms… They’re from the game, right? Then this place is not a factory, but that girl’s science center!
This is bad… Cause if I’m right, this place is crawling with guards… I have to get away as far as possible… I had to leave, but I stopped as soon as I turned around. How is returning to the alley going to help? I’ll just get caught and killed.
In the game, this place is the reason we come to this city in the first place. It’s called a research center, but they’re not researching anything by the time we get here. It ends up being just a place with lots of good loot and a great grinding spot. Well, for the characters from the game, of course. No way a wimpy girl like me can do anything to the guards here.
But this impossibly well-guarded complex has one fatal weakness. There’s a window in a storage room with a broken lock that can be opened from the outside.
“Hmm… Should I try to sneak in?”
It’s dumb. Incredibly dumb. But I’m not gonna find a way back just by sitting around. They have a lot of crazy stuff inside… There’s gotta be something to help me in there…
I have to try. There’s no other choice.
This alley is… I’m in the right place, aren’t I? This is where the characters enter in the game. If I’m right, there should be a cargo container up against the wall… There it is…
“Grrr….” Curse my lack of strength… Why is it so hard to climb something around my height? This is a proper workout… I made it to the top. Now to do it all again to go over the wall. Am I fat? Is this why it’s so hard for me to climb? N- no way… Right?
No time to worry about that now. I made it in. It’s do or die now. Ughh… Is it too late to go back? What was I thinking? Am I really doing this?
This is just like what happened with Miyuki…
What’s wrong with me today? I’m too impulsive… Never experiment, never try new things, never take any risks. Have I learned nothing?
Can’t panic now… Calm down… I know how this place is built and how it works. Even if it’s crazy, it shouldn’t be impossible for me to go in and grab something. I sneaked from cover to cover, moving in the way of the broken window. There were patrols between the various buildings of the complex. The guards were all taking it easy with bored looks on their faces. Just another day at work… Completely unaware that there was an intruder in their midst right now…
Works for me… I’m very close now. One last sprint and I’ll make it-
“Aww man… Why did you have to wake me up?”
Th- that was close!! I was about to start running when the voice of a guard nearby stopped me. I immediately hid behind a barrel placed against the side of a building.
“What’s wrong with you? We’re on the clock. I saved your ass by waking you before the boss caught you.” A pair of guards walked past me. The earnest one smacked the back of his partner to get him moving. “We’re switching with the guys in the main entrance. Come on.”
“Why are we even being moved? There an intruder or something? No demon would be crazy enough to sneak in here. Even a spirit couldn’t phase through.”
“None of our business. Just orders from above.” The earnest guard shrugged. “The boss will arrive from school soon, so we need to show her that we’re working hard.”
“Ah, that’s smart, man… I could do with a promotion or two…”
The guards laughed as they got farther away. I can get to my goal now, but… what if someone else shows up? There’s an open space between me and the window. I’m getting cold feet here. I’m in too deep already… The longer I wait, the harder it’s going to get… I should have thought about this earlier…
I made it to the window, and I had yet another thing I forgot to think about beforehand. What if the lock is working? I mean, aren’t I assuming too much? It is broken in the game, but that doesn’t mean it’s broken now. What if it’s not? Life is not a game. Am I going to be stuck here with no way bac-
“Oh.”
It opened.
All that worrying for nothing… I’m embarrassed now.
“Welcome back, Velvet-sama.” At the same time, a young-looking demon girl arrived at the lab’s central room. Where all the experiments and research were overseen and with stations for dozens of researchers.
The man at the back of the room, who watched over all the scientists, greeted her like she’s someone important. The girl who’s obviously too young to be a researcher is respected by all in the room and moved like she owned the place.
“Hmm. I’m back.” With a casual nod, she placed her schoolbag down and took the seat at the top of the monitor-filled room.
“What’s the situation? Did anything happen while I was away?” She asked the man next to her without even lifting her head.
“It’s nothing you need concern yourself with. Earlier this afternoon, one of our men ran into someone suspicious in the alley next to us. There’s no cause for alarm, but I had some of the patrols change their routes just to make sure.”
“Good work.” She shrugged. “We don’t want to take any risks at this point. Not when we’re so close…”
“Of course… Everyone is well aware of that.”
Good to have everyone on the same page. The girl was happy with the report. “Tell me in more detail. What orders did you give?”
“I had the guards increase their patrols inside the complex and sent a few more men to reinforce the main entrance.”
“Hmm…” Now a small frown appeared on her face. “Let’s have the men move again. Leave the guards at the entrances, but bring the patrols into the main building. Tell them to bring anti-spirit and anti-vampire equipment too. I want the main research room guarded on all sides.”
“Excuse me, but isn’t that a tad excessive? Securing the whole facility will ensure the safety of the research room. Do we really need to go that far?”
“I said now.” The girl wasn’t having any arguments. “Nothing here is as valuable as that masterpiece. The Hero has already been found, and we need to finish our part as soon as possible. We’re trying to prevent a repeat of what happened in the last war, remember?”
“I- I understand…” The sarcasm stung, and the man faltered. “I’ll give the order right away-”
*Weeeeeeee Wooooooo Weeeeeeee Woooooo!*
One of the sirens went off. Every person in the room immediately started scrambling, the girl at the top slamming her desk. “What’s that siren? What’s going on?”
“I- it’s an intruder!” The first researcher to find the information couldn’t believe it. “Intruder detected! Going into the… research room?!”
“What?!” The absolute worst-case scenario. Velvet could not let that stand.
“Send every single guard there now!” She shouted. “This is it! No second chances this time! We have to stop that intruder no matter what!”
I jumped through the window into the storage room, and there was no one inside. Lucky me. I can take a breather… A quick glance didn’t reveal anything that could help me get back. This one’s a bust. I have to search the other rooms, I guess. I got this.
The storage room opened into a hallway with lots of rooms. Are all the guards outside? Peeking through the door, I don’t really see anyone.
Should be safe then.
I started looking through each of the rooms for something that could help, and this time, it wasn’t as bad. I found a few things that might be able to get me up to the portal, but nothing that would get there for sure.
Do I settle with this? I don’t think I’ll get another chance to look through this place. If I grab something here and go back, that’s it.
“What to do…?” I thought about it in the hallway while moving towards the last room. Two doors that looked far more imposing than the others and a sign at the top. “Central Research?” What does that mean?
Hmm… Wait… Didn’t this room show up in the game? I think it was an important room, but… Wasn’t it empty? Whatever research went on in here was done by the time we get here in game. I have no clue what’s inside. Sigh… Why didn’t I talk to more NPCs when I was here? Shouldn’t have skimmed through the story so much… Too late for that now, huh? The research was done in game, but what about at this point in time?
Should I take a look? Even if whatever research they’re doing here is done, I might still find something else. Hell, I don’t care about their research. I care about going home!
I pushed open the door into the large circular room. There was a big machine in the middle with small machinery around, but the room wasn’t cluttered. There were a few other doors leading here, and they were all easily accessible. The room even had an elevated platform in the back for observation.
“What’s that?”
But the most surprising thing was a small object floating in the middle of the big machine. Looked like a bracelet with a crystal levitating in the middle. The machine itself looked like a high-tech circular altar, which the crystal and bracelet floated above. Three big mechanical arms surrounded the altar, and each was shooting a laser that converged on the crystal. Are they charging it, or…?
“Wait… Is that…?” Crystal… Bracelet… There’s no way… I took a step forward. I recognize it… I know what that is… Ughh… What was the name…?
“Vi- VISS Driver…”
That’s it! VISS Driver. The VISS Driver. I can’t believe it… What’s it doing here? The VISS Driver in game is what allows the protagonist and friends to learn their skills. The source of their power… Was this where it was originally made? I had no idea… If only I knew how to use it… I’d have a guaranteed way back if I could take-
“Ehh?”
I touched it… Why? When did I extend my hand?
The lasers immediately shut down, and the crystal shone with a blinding light…
It hurts! I can’t see anything! I don’t think it liked being touched. It’s retaliating! Am I going to die? There’s something sharp cutting through my chest… My chest? No… I can’t quite pinpoint it… It’s deeper… A tingling in the very core of my being…
[VISS Driver EX installed successfully.]
“Haaahh… Haaahhh… Haahhh…”
The pain… The light… They’re gone… Just like the VISS Driver… All that’s left is some text floating in front of me and a soothing voice playing in my head. Is this…?
[New user detected. Iroha Shinohara registered as the new user.]
It is… The voice… The text… It’s the VISS Driver! I can’t believe… Was it supposed to be this easy? Well, whatever. Now I can access the skill system from the game and get something to get me home! I’m finally free-
[Error. No records found for Iroha Shinohara. Unable to present user with suitable skills.]
Huh?
No skills? Is this a joke?
The VISS Driver works by making skills that are compatible with the users obtainable through skill points. In game, each character would have different skills available, and depending on how you raised them, the skills could differ from playthrough to playthrough.
Yet… I have nothing? Am I so worthless that there’s nothing good about me for the VISS Driver to pull? Wait… No records found, was it…? Guess the VISS Driver just doesn’t know about me… Is it because I came from another world?
[Initiating correction subroutine. The system will observe the user and present skills suited to observed behaviors.]
What was that? Does that mean I’ll get skills I can unlock as time goes on? That’s not good enough! I need to get out of here now! I don’t have time for that…
In the game, each skill was tied to a specific skill tree. Whenever a skill was purchased, that tree would get locked in as one of six trees that characters could get skills from. All the characters would start with one or two trees, leaving the others for the player to customize. I, however, have none. All six slots empty. I remember wishing for a character that was a completely blank state back then… Starting to regret that now…
[Iroha Shinohara: Lv.1]
[HP: 100/100]
[MP: 50/50]
[Skill Points: 10]
Oh? Found some more stuff. 10 skill points… Enough for one basic skill. If I want more, I need more levels, but how do I do that? By killing monsters? I have better stuff to worry about, don’t I?
[Recent activity by Iroha Shinohara detected. Analyzing recent activity…]
What now, VISS Driver? Recent activity? Am I actually getting a skill? Please give me something…
Just what is this recent activity? Have I even done anything? It said there were no records at first… Did it change its mind? What did it find? Maybe it only counts since I first got to this world… It’s been more than an hour, so… Maybe there’s something now?
“There she is!” Every door entering this room on this floor was suddenly kicked open.
“Don’t move!”
“Surrender, and we won’t hurt you!” Dozens of guards showed up with weapons in hand… What now?
I’m completely surrounded…
Oh no… There’s nowhere to run… No no no no! I can’t stop shaking. My legs won’t move! Some of the guards held halberds and spears, others capture devices… It’s over, isn’t it?
How did they even find out I was here? I thought I managed to sneak past them.
Guhhh… This is an important place… They must have kept it under tight watch.
[Significant event found – Escaping pursuer. Searching suitable skills.]
Ahh… It’s too late… I can’t escape anymore. I got lucky last time. Why did I even think this was a good idea? They’re gonna kill me once they catch me, aren’t they?
“Quick! Capture her! What’s the situation?” A small girl ran behind the guards and climbed to the top of a desk near the surrounding machines. “How the hell did she get in here…?” She glared from behind the wall of guards.
Is she their boss? So young… At least a couple years younger than me… Is she one of those child prodigies? She seems seriously pissed…
Child prodigy…? Hmm… Her face seems familiar somehow… Ah! She’s an important character, isn’t she? She looks younger than she does in the game, but I remember now. This whole facility is hers, isn’t it?
I remember… I wouldn’t forget a cute girl like her… Velvet… Power… something? What was her last name again? Maybe I don’t remember everything, but it’s her. Amazing dark blue hair with slight curls outwards at the points with a galactic golden glow. Shorter than in game, though. Smaller chest too… Did they nerf her boobs? She was supposed to have a much nicer figure…
Ahh… But she’s still as cute as ever… There was a pair of dark horns on her head. They kinda match the color of her hair and her dress, which is also blue and golden.
It’s an imposing look… Even though she’s smaller than I remember. Her poses and faces make it look like she’s always annoyed, but in a way that makes you wanna poke her cheek and see if she bites. Can I try? I’d love to interact with her, but…
I don’t think I can at this point.
“Wait… My masterpiece…” Her eyes widened when she saw the device in the big machine missing. “The VISS Driver is gone?!” And the obvious culprit was obviously… “Don’t bother capturing her anymore… Kill her.” Her voice was completely cold, hopeless. “Maybe it’s not too late… Maybe we can still salvage something…”
Ki- kill… Is she serious? Are they seriously going to kill me?
[Suitable skill found.]
[Momentum – Agility Burst (Cost: 10 Skill Points)]
Agility… what? I don’t have time for this. Velvet’s voice snapped the guard aware. One of them charged forward with a halberd in hand. Am I really going to get chopped in half? Is that blade real? Move… Move, legs! Move!
[Skill – Agility Burst acquired.]
I bought it…
Just in time to get out of the way…
The guard swung his halberd down, but I managed to jump back. In an instant, a step backwards practically made me jump, and I fell while backing up.
The guards were stunned, but they were also professionals. A miss was nothing to them, and they immediately charged in again. I can do it, can’t I? I’m not completely surrounded… There are some gaps they forgot to cover…
The door is above me. The big observation platform was one floor higher and left completely open. There were some stairs along the wall to get up there, and I would usually need to get past the guards to get there, but…
Agility Burst! I got as close to the ledge as possible and jumped. I actually did it… I have a skill now… My hand barely reached the railing, but I was able to vault over and get to the door behind.
“Sh- she’s running away! Don’t let her escape!”
Velvet’s voice echoed behind me, but I didn’t stop. There was no one here to stop me. The guards had all gone to the research room, so this path was clear. Where exactly I am going I have no clue.
The guards quickly reached the hallway and chased after me. In a straight line they were faster, and they should have been even faster if not for the heavy weapons and armor they carried.
Then I reached a set of stairs.
Agility Burst is a skill that gives me a short burst of strength to perform impressive athletic feats. I could run up normally, but…
[MP: 30/50]
I jumped. From railing to railing until I reached the top floor. Using Agility Burst uses my MP, huh? Is it based on the number of uses? I’ve almost used up half already…
Whatever… I ran through the hallway in front of me without thinking too much. I shouldn’t even have come to the top floor, should I? How am I going to leave now? Yet somehow, the parkour, the jumps, and the running felt oddly liberating… Am I having fun? No way, right?
The guards were quickly closing in as I reached a door at the end of the hallway.
“Is it open?”
My heart was beating too fast, so I fumbled to grab the handle, but it worked. Inside was a big meeting room of sorts. A very long table with lots of chairs and a big window that went from floor to ceiling on the opposite side of the door…
“Hmm… I can work with that…”
I activated Agility Burst and charged the window.
“Woah!!” Am I flying? Holy shit! This is so dumb! “Ahahahahahahaha!”
Ouch… I rolled on the ground when I finally landed… Did my skill save me? Shards of glass rained behind me as the guards stared down from the top floor. What now, huh?
No cuts from the glass, but… Damn… My body hurts… Not enough to stop me…
The main gate was right ahead, but I couldn’t run out into the open street. “This way…” I headed for the same wall that I used to get in and jumped over. I had to use my skill again, but I made it back to the alleyway. The guards have to go down through the stairs, but they’ll definitely still be after me. If I can just get back to where the portal was…
[MP: 16/50]
They caught up… Not a lot of MP left… If I have to use it to escape them, I might not have enough to reach the portal… Come on… I can’t let them catch me now… I ran through the maze once again, doing my best to remember the path, and then…
“There it is…” The portal… The roof access staircase… The trash container I was trying to move earlier… I made it.
“Stop!”
“We’ve got you surrounded!”
The guards chasing me through the alley weren’t the only ones as they poured in from both sides of the alley… Worst yet… They got here before me… Through the main streets, huh? To reach the stairs, I would have to get past a group of them.
Come on… The portal’s right there! I’m so close! What now?
I had no time to think as they immediately charged in to attack me. They have no intention of keeping me alive at this point, do they? I can’t get caught now… I can’t!
“Agility Burst!”
Fuck it… Here goes nothing.
I jumped to the container. Still far from the stairs, but a little closer. More! I jumped again, grabbing a small ledge of the wall. It’s so tiny… How can I even grab onto this? Agility Burst! The stairs… Made it.
The guards managed to grab the railings too and climbed after me. Why are they so persistent? Just give it up already!
Agility Burst! One last time… The portal’s right there… Just a little more!
…
I made it…
A blinding light enveloped me, and I felt the same falling sensation that I had already experienced today…
“Ouch!”
I fell on my butt…
Should have hurt, but this time, it was the concrete in the parking lot below me. I made it… Didn’t I? I made it, and I’m alive! I can’t believe it… The parking lot was exactly the same, with the car still parked next to the hole I fell into. The portal, however, was gone. No portal. No hole…
“Hey, what are you doing here? Where did you come from?”
“Ehh?”
Couldn’t even celebrate properly before a pink-haired beauty with a serious look stood over me, pressing a blade against my neck.
Ahahahaha…
How great…
Here we go again…
