200. Leonor realizes that she is pregnant
The Hidden Crown and the Growing Storm
Palacio Real de Madrid : Private Chambers of the Heir
Leonor’s days had become a carefully constructed performance.
She woke before dawn in her vast bedroom, hand instinctively moving to the gentle swell of her belly that was still small enough to hide beneath flowing royal gowns. Succession to the Spanish throne follows male-preference cognatic primogeniture. A dynast who marries against the express prohibition of the monarch and the Cortes Generales, the legislative chamber of Spain, is excluded from the succession. Upon proclamation by the Cortes Generales, the monarch is to take an oath to discharge his duties faithfully, to abide by the Constitution and the law and ensure they are abided by, and to respect the rights of the citizens and of the Autonomous CommunitiesThe child their child was growing steadily. She could feel the faint flutter of movement now, like a tiny storm already learning its father’s rhythm.
Her mornings were ritual.Section 1 of Article 57 of the 1978 Constitution of Spain provides that The Crown of Spain is hereditary to the "sucesores" of His Majesty Don Juan Carlos I de Borbón. To date, no clarification has been made whether this provision includes anyone beyond the direct descendants of King Juan Carlos. Successors may not be presumed to be synonymous with descendants. Section 3 of Article 57 further states that should all the lines designated by law become extinct, the Cortes Generales shall provide for succession to the Crown in the manner most suitable for the interests of Spain. Infanta Pilar, Duchess of Badajoz and Infanta Margarita, Duchess of Soria, sisters of King Juan Carlos, respectively renounced their rights to the succession upon marriage but before the adoption of the Constitution. Similarly, the rights of earlier generations are clouded by renunciations and unapproved marriages which may or may not exclude them from succession
She would stand before the tall mirror, tracing the curve of her stomach with trembling fingers while wearing only a silk robe. The emerald gown she had once worn for Caos now hung in the back of the closet like a relic of a different life.
Leonor (whispering to her reflection, voice soft and heavy): You are growing so fast, little one. Your father’s chaos is already in your blood. I can feel it that same restless fire. I chose the crown for you… for Spain… but every morning I wonder if I chose wrong. If I should have run to him instead of standing on that pitch and breaking both our hearts.
Breakfast with the family was a masterclass in silence and hidden truths.
King Felipe sat at the head of the table, reading reports with a furrowed brow. Queen Sofía watched everything with quiet maternal eyes. And Princess Sofía — her younger sister — sat across from her with that perfectly composed smile that never quite reached her eyes.
Leonor ate little, claiming “royal duties” had stolen her appetite. In truth, the smell of certain foods now turned her stomach — a secret she guarded with every breath.
King Felipe (looking up from his papers, voice warm but tired): You look pale, hija. The schedule is too heavy. You must rest more. Spain needs its future queen strong.
Leonor (forcing a gentle smile): I am fine, Father. Just… thinking about the future.
Sofía’s eyes narrowed slightly, but she said nothing.
The Discovery
It happened on a quiet Tuesday afternoon.
Leonor had been feeling dizzy during a private meeting with advisors. She excused herself to her chambers, where one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting found her vomiting in the private bathroom.
The woman — loyal to Leonor since childhood — helped her clean up, then froze when she saw the small but unmistakable swell of her stomach as the robe fell open.
Lady-in-Waiting (eyes wide, voice hushed): Your Highness… are you…?
Leonor nodded slowly, placing a protective hand over her belly.
Leonor: Yes. And no one can know. Not yet.
But secrets in the Palacio Real had a way of reaching the King.
That evening, King Felipe summoned her to his private study. Queen Sofía was already there, face pale. Sofía (the sister) stood in the corner, watching with carefully hidden intensity.
King Felipe (voice heavy, eyes filled with a mixture of shock, disappointment, and love): Leonor… is it true?
She did not deny it. She simply placed both hands over her stomach and lifted her chin.
Leonor: I am pregnant, Father. With Caos’s child.
The silence that followed was deafening.
King Felipe (sitting down heavily, rubbing his face): Dios mío… After everything. After your public declaration. After you chose the crown… you carried his child in secret? (voice cracking) Do you understand what this means? The Cortes will see this as betrayal. The people… the people who praised your sacrifice will feel lied to. And your sister…
Sofía stepped forward, her voice smooth but edged with something sharper.
Sofía: This changes everything, sister. A child out of wedlock. With him. The man who has become a global symbol of chaos. The monarchy’s image will be shattered. The line of succession… it becomes complicated.
Queen Sofía (softly, tears in her eyes): My daughter… why didn’t you tell us? We could have helped you. Protected you.
Leonor (voice steady, though tears fell freely): Because I knew what you would ask me to do. I chose the crown publicly because Spain needed stability. But this child… this child is mine. And his. I will not give him up. I will not hide him forever. If the Cortes wants to remove me, let them try. But I will not deny this life growing inside me.
King Felipe looked older than he had in years. He stood slowly and walked to the window, staring out at the illuminated palace gardens. The Congress of Deputies, the lower house of the Cortes Generales, has the constitutional responsibility to clarify the succession when doubt arises. If "sucesores" is deemed to mean direct descendants, the succession ends with the heirs of Infanta Cristina. If the renunciations by Infanta Pilar and Infanta Margarita are not deemed valid, their descendants would follow the line of succession:
King Felipe: We will keep this secret as long as we can. But secrets like this do not stay hidden. (turns back to her, voice heavy with love and pain) You chose duty once. Now you carry both duty and love in the same body. I do not know if Spain is ready for that.
Leonor placed both hands protectively over her belly, feeling another faint flutter.
Leonor (whispering more to herself than to them): Then Spain will have to learn. Because I will not choose again. Not between my child and my crown. Not between Caos’s memory and my future.
The meeting ended in heavy silence.
As Leonor walked back to her chambers, hand never leaving her stomach, she allowed herself one quiet thought:
Leonor: Wherever you are, my love… our child is growing strong. And one day… I hope you get to meet the storm we created together.
Outside the Palacio Real, the city of Madrid continued its night rhythm, unaware that inside its walls, a new chapter of chaos and crowns was quietly beginning.
To be continued…
