Chapter 109: We Are Now Going International
The next few days went by as a blur as things got incredibly busy for everyone after the exterior of the tower was completed.
And according to Olivia, even though it was not necessary for me to do so, I still did my best to help everyone with their work.
That included me getting involved with the media and the government again as an entire building appearing on the island in less than three days fully built was something that no one has seen before so there were a lot of questions.
Word also got out that I had laid claim to the island and we were moving our base of operations to that island so some people started speculating that I was seceding from the country to establish my own country.
That was ridiculous of course, but I still needed to come out and address it so there was a press conference where I had to answer more questions by the media throwing questions at me.
They had me answer about the purpose of the island and why I had chosen to set up a base that wasn’t on the mainland. Then they questioned if I was actually trying to set up an independent nation on my own.
Then there were people raising concerns that I was primarily hiring a vast number of other worlders and not enough locals which quite a lot of people were allegedly upset about.
I wasn’t surprised by most of the questions because Olivia had already predicted them ahead of time and gave me some answers that I could use if I were to be asked any of them.
Thus, I was able to answer and also deflect all the questions that the media had presented to me quite well, even if I were to say so myself.
I basically told them that the decision to move the base of operations to the island was a strategic move to ensure my presence would not disrupt the daily lives of the locals using the attempt on my life as an example.
I even made sure to assure the media that I was not trying to set up an independent nation and succeeding from Singapore by pointing out the fact that we would be working very closely with the government and also relying on their support for our future plans.
Olivia even had me confirm right there that we were intending to respond to Thailand’s request on dealing with one of their rifts and our government was acting as our intermediary for making this arrangement happen.
Naturally, I was already aware of this arrangement ahead of time and it wasn’t like she sprung this on me at the last moment. She just suggested to me that I should make an official announcement about it instead of keeping it quiet.
Additionally, my answer to the act of hiring more other worlders than locals was the fact that I was doing my best to help the local job market by creating work for refugees to open up more work opportunities for the locals.
While we would intend to open up the work to locals as well, we will focus on only hiring other worlders for now to help them out.
Of course, we never gave a specific date when we would do the switch so it could be fifty years down the road for all we know.
Then after that press conference, I also had to get involved with some meetings with several government officials where I had to show up to listen in on the discussion of how the government will act with me in the future.
Honestly, that was all just for show to the public as they fully intend on just letting me do whatever I wanted.
The whole point of the meeting was to show everyone else that I was supporting this country and so the other countries would have to take us more seriously.
Coupled with the fact that I was going to ’recluse’ myself on my own island that would now be closed off to any unauthorised visitors, it would be close to impossible for any foreign agents to meet me unless they go through official channels.
In other words... They would have to cozy up to our government in order to do that so... I can already see the stock market going up for our country in particular.
Putting aside all that, Olivia had been true to her word and basically made sure that I was not allowed anywhere outside of my island without someone accompanying me.
In fact, if I wanted to walk around the mainland as the Mortal God, no less than three of my Guardians had to be with me.
And seeing that there were only six of them right now including Olivia, they were basically on a constant rotation to accompany me the past few days.
I felt a little bad for them but they don’t really seem to mind.
Olivia did assure me that the new batch of Guardians would be introduced to me soon and I would proceed with the last round of interviews to decide if they would be hired or not.
But for now... I would have to be accompanied by one of the two groups of my Guardians for each of the events that I went to.
I leaned back as the car accelerated past the traffic junction to head towards our next location.
"What’s next on the agenda?" I asked.
"A meeting with the foreign minister of Thailand and Singapore to formalise the request for your aid in dealing with one of the rifts, my Lord," Olivia answered from the driver’s seat without taking her eyes away from the road.
"And where is it taking place?"
"The Istana, my Lord."
"Right, should have expected that..."
Leena turned to look at me from the passenger seat, "Is something wrong, Mortal God?"
I shook my head, "No... Just that I never really went to places like this before becoming a Mortal God so it feels a little weird to do so now."
Kris turned to me from where he was seated beside me, "Oh~ But I have to say that place is really beautiful though! I’ve never seen anything like it back in my world! I would have thought that places related to the government would be grey and dreary but not here!"
I nodded in agreement, "It is indeed quite beautiful... I still can’t get used to it though."
Olivia turned the vehicle towards the main entrance of the place in question, "Don’t worry, my Lord. We will make sure that your place is not inferior in comparison."
I wasn’t really saying all that to draw a comparison but I guess it has something to do with my standing as well so I didn’t reject the idea.
Olivia slowed the car down as we approached the gates and I moved my hand to my face to make sure my mask was there before she lowered the window.
The Gurkha police officer stepped up to Olivia’s side of the car, taking a moment to look at her before scanning inside the car before he stepped back to wave at the other officers to let us through without a word.
Olivia then drove us past the gates and we headed towards the main building once again.
We stopped directly outside the entrance and I had to wait for everyone to get out of the car where my door would be opened by one of them before I could step out.
I found it quite unnecessary but it was decided that this was for my safety so I couldn’t argue against it.
There, both the foreign ministers of Thailand and Singapore were waiting for me at the entrance, their faces breaking into smiles when they saw me.
"Mortal God, thank you for joining us," The Singapore foreign minister greeted me with his hand extended.
I already know who he was so grasped his hand in a firm handshake, "Minister Ba. Happy to meet you."
He then gestured to the man standing beside him, "This is minister Ma, minister of foreign affairs from Thailand."
He placed his hands together in a prayer gesture with his fingers touching his nose, "Sawadee krap, Mortal God. Thank you for agreeing to help us with our rift"
I mimicked his action though mine was less formal where my fingers did not touch my nose, "Sawadee krap, minister Ma. It is my pleasure."
I took a moment to look around the place and it seems like the place was quite empty without any guards or security around.
The absence of them probably meant that they were still careful about the possibility of foreign spies so they were keeping the involvement of third parties down to a minimum as much as possible.
Minister Ba then gestured towards the interior of the building, "Shall we? We have a room already prepared for this meeting."
I nodded, "Of course."
Ok... No worries... This is just your first time dealing with foreign ministers... Just act calm...
