Chapter 12: Scouting the Path
Hearing this, Meng Shan's group of three showed no reaction.
Seeing this, Li Musheng raised his eyebrows, his dissatisfaction clearly written on his face, "Ha, do you perhaps think Miss Cang and I are bad people?"
Meng Shan observed Li Musheng for a while, unable to discern his depth. Shaking his head, he said, "This young master's kind intention is appreciated, but we have urgent matters to attend to on this journey and it's truly inconvenient to travel together."
The green-clothed woman and the scholar beside him remained vigilant the entire time without saying a word.
They seemed to have deep wariness toward Cang Yinyue and Li Musheng, especially after Cang Yinyue exposed Meng Shan's identity. They clearly became even more apprehensive.
"No fun."
Li Musheng shook his head. Immediately ceasing to pay attention to the three people, he patted the mule-horse beneath him and headed toward the mountain path ahead.
As he passed by Meng Shan, he was only a foot away from the blade in the other's hand, yet he rode carelessly past just like that, as if nothing was wrong.
Meng Shan and the green-clothed woman's gazes flickered repeatedly, but in the end, neither made a move.
Cang Yinyue observed everything. She nodded lightly, seemingly rather satisfied with their decision. She said nothing more and rode her horse to catch up with Li Musheng ahead.
After the two had traveled some distance, Cang Yinyue looked at Li Musheng's back and suddenly spoke coldly, "You're quite good at taking matters into your own hands. Letting them follow along on the road, are you certain they have no ill intentions?"
"Little did you know, if I hadn't spoken to intimidate them just now, they probably would have already attacked, intending to silence us in this desolate mountain wilderness!"
Hearing this, Li Musheng turned back, glanced at the three people trailing far behind them, and smiled meaningfully, "I don't care what they think. In any case, they can't kill me."
"You're quite confident."
Cang Yinyue replied with a cold laugh.
However, in her view, although Meng Shan and the other woman were both Innate experts, if they really fought, the other party absolutely couldn't last ten moves under her hands, and likewise truly couldn't withstand Li Musheng's acupoint sealing technique.
"Once we pass through Chong Province, we'll quicken our pace. Those three people are problematic. If you don't want to invite trouble, we must distance ourselves from them."
Cang Yinyue remained very cautious. Li Musheng nodded, sitting on the mule-horse's back, stroking his chin thoughtfully, "I noticed that scholar's clothes are worn and shabby, his face gaunt and sallow. He's probably not some official's or wealthy family's son. Rather, his origins should be quite impoverished."
"But he's being protected by two Innate experts, which is clearly somewhat abnormal."
"Why would they protect a poor scholar? Or does the scholar have some other special identity?"
As Li Musheng spoke, his gaze suddenly shifted to look at Cang Yinyue, "Miss Cang, have you noticed that scholar's situation is very similar to mine? His age is also comparable to mine, and moreover, their destination is clearly the imperial capital, Shangyang City..."
Hearing this, Cang Yinyue's delicate brows furrowed slightly as she showed a pondering expression, "I know what you're trying to say. Your speculation isn't without reason, but would such a coincidence really occur?"
Li Musheng smiled, "There's no story without coincidence. Perhaps it really is such a coincidence."
However, just at this moment, his expression suddenly became serious. He reached out to rein in the mule-horse beneath him and lowered his voice, "This really is an unfortunate coincidence. The path we're taking seems to be blocked."
Cang Yinyue hadn't yet understood what he meant when she saw Li Musheng suddenly leap onto a large tree beside them, shading his eyes with his hand as he looked into the distance, "Miss Cang, come up and take a look. There are people ahead who've set up a roadblock, right in our path."
Hearing this, Cang Yinyue's eyes flickered slightly. She immediately leaped lightly onto the branches like Li Musheng.
Following his gaze, she indeed saw a simple wooden stockade built on a distant hillside with over ten people guarding it, perfectly blocking several mountain paths from the nearby forests to the road ahead.
Seeing this scene, Cang Yinyue's face showed a trace of puzzlement as she turned to look at Li Musheng, "Just now while sitting on the mule-horse, could you see even such a distant place?"
"My martial arts are profound and my eyesight sharp as a torch. Is there a problem with that?"
Li Musheng shrugged, "However, what I want to know now is, should we change our route next, or just force our way through?"
Cang Yinyue frowned and glanced at him. Her gaze swept over the distant wooden stockade. After pondering for a moment, she said, "These people setting up a checkpoint in such a remote place is clearly unreasonable. For caution's sake, I don't recommend forcing our way through directly."
Saying this, she looked back at the mountain path behind them. A cold gleam flashed through her eyes, "We should let them scout the path first."
Hearing this, Li Musheng instantly understood Cang Yinyue's meaning.
As expected, this young lady was as cunning as ever!
"In that case, we can only let those three fellows be the guinea pigs."
Li Musheng nodded. Then he and Cang Yinyue leaped down from the tree.
After the two rode their mule-horses forward for some distance, they suddenly entered the forest beside them at a blind spot and disappeared from view.
At the same time, the three people behind them remained completely unaware.
"Commander Zhao, could you discern the backgrounds of those two just now?"
The green-clothed woman Yuan Mei, seeing she temporarily couldn't see Li Musheng and the other's figures, asked in a lowered voice.
Hearing this, Meng Shan glanced at the scholar beside him and shook his head, "That young man never revealed his internal energy or true qi, so I can't discern his background. However, that woman is well-informed, even so clear about the Great Li military's situation. She's probably either someone from the military or the court."
Saying this, he paused, "Moreover, she's also an Innate expert. Although Innate experts aren't much in Shangyang City, encountering one here, I don't have full confidence in killing her. Otherwise, I would have signaled you to attack just now."
Hearing this, a cold gleam flashed through Yuan Mei's eyes, "Our mission on this journey must remain secret and cannot fail. If there's an opportunity on the road, I think we should eliminate them. Otherwise, once the matter leaks out, it could very likely affect the general's plans."
Meng Shan pondered for a moment and nodded, "We'll see if there's a suitable opportunity. If we decide to act, we must ensure absolute certainty."
He thought about how Cang Yinyue had already exposed his origins. If he allowed her to return to the imperial capital, this journey's matters probably couldn't be concealed.
Thinking of this, he turned to look at the scholar beside him, narrowing his eyes, "Your Highness, the journey to the imperial capital is long and distant. To prevent treacherous people from plotting harm, please endure for a few more days. Once we reach the imperial capital, everything will be safe."
Hearing this, the scholar hurriedly cupped his hands and bowed, "This humble scholar thanks both lords for your protection along the way. In the future, after meeting Father Emperor, I will certainly reward you generously."
Meng Shan and Yuan Mei exchanged glances, revealing meaningful smiles.
