Chapter 86: The most protective of Cheon Areum
Immediately upon opening his eyes, his vision spun as he stared upwards at the green leaves of the trees that surrounded the area. A dainty frown creased his brows as he thought of how many bugs there could be slithering and flapping around him (though he was too bothered to even register their existence).
As a person who had spent the entirety of his life—except the few years as Cheon Areum—indoors, he wasn’t accustomed to staying out, especially in nature, and he hadn’t even seen the usual bugs most children his age casually played around with even once in his whole life as Kim Sangmin. He had only seen them on a screen or in pictures from the self-study picture books he had. Obviously, he would be disgusted and terrified of them now.
He was scared of seeing any of those unsightly things, so he cleanly closed his heavy eyelids again, breathing heavily because even if he saw something, he couldn’t move a single muscle—not even the tip of his fingertip—right now. After coming down from the fight-or-flight mode and stopping the flow of energy from getting in or out of his cores, he could only try his best to breathe through the pain. His new core also made it very difficult to breathe as it raised his chest, and sharp, excruciating pangs made him take breaks between even this simple task.
It was as if he had dug into his body and placed a foreign object inside the size of a lump. It needed time to adjust and heal before it could also be considered and used as comfortably as his original core.
Don’t think about it. You’re not a weak, unawakened human anymore. You can get a healer and recover in a day easily.
Constantly reassuring himself in his mind, he tried to get rid of the thoughts that he obviously wasn’t fond of. In his hurry to get away from the civilians as quickly as possible, he hadn’t even seen where he was going, and now he wasn’t sure where this place was.
Is this a mountain?
That was his best guess. He could try to get his phone out of his inventory and see if there are any signals near here.
"..."
Right... he couldn’t move.
He wanted to check if Yoon Seoyul had come out of the gate unscathed and keep his word, but...
I will do it tomorrow.
He also wanted to talk with Rian about something.
Surely I can do that later after I... get healed...
Although in unbearable pain, Cheon Areum was still an S+ Class hunter. He instantly picked up the sound of footsteps approaching his way. He closed his eyes again, hoping whoever it was would just pass by. He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself if he saw another human right now. In his condition, it was especially easy to lose control. He had tried his best until now, so he was really wishing to keep the promise of not losing control to Yoon Seoyul at the very least.
Unfortunately, the footsteps continued to get louder until a thud sounded just by his side.
"Haah... Areum..."
"Cheon Areum."
Not believing it the first time, the second time he was called, he saw Yoon Seoyul, on his knees, sitting next to him. Not sure how he should respond, he chose not to speak.
"What are you doing here? Let’s go home. Mhm?"
After a long period of silence in the nature, Yoon Seoyul spoke again.
"Had I really killed Kihyun or anyone else, what would you have done?"
"..."
"Would you leave me then? Or just get upset with me for a few days? Or better yet, just keep it in and live with the fact that you are married to a murderer for life?"
"Stop calling yourself that. You didn’t kill anyone."
"I’m just wondering if I had."
Wouldn’t it be the same as what had happened in the book originally? Cheon Areum’s name would be feared by everyone. No one would like to even talk to him anymore. A natural barrier around him would be formed. And later on, Rian would find out that his hyung is a murderer who had used his hunter status to bury the accountability of killing a person. Deep in his thoughts, he heard a clear-as-day response from Yoon Seoyul. One he hadn’t expected.
"I will take the blame."
Cheon Areum’s gaze silently fell on Yoon Seoyul upon hearing those words, tearing him away from his drowning thoughts.
"You will be the one who would have to spend all your life with a ’murderer,’ as you said."
With confidence, Yoon Seoyul spoke, holding the eye contact. Cheon Areum was the one who couldn’t hold it. He turned his head away as he remarked.
"You’re such a loser, Yoon Seoyul."
One hell of a main character he was. The kindest one for him.
"Maybe that’s why I love you so much."
A loser and a fool. What a combo. Cheon Areum chuckled as he mused to himself and then hissed at the same moment. Even the slightest movement hurt him enough to rejudge his life decisions. After a squeeze of his eyes to endure the impact, Cheon Areum muttered.
"Don’t worry. Cheon Areum won’t kill anyone in this lifetime. I will make sure of it."
Speaking in a low tone, Cheon Areum opened his eyes to glance at Yoon Seoyul, who was sitting on his side with his eyes also tightly shut. A bit confused, Cheon Areum noticed only now that Yoon Seoyul was shaking. His whole body was visibly shaking as he sat on the dirt.
"..."
Pretending he hadn’t noticed, Cheon Areum shifted to stare at the sky instead. Was he trying to suppress his anger at him? Yoon Seoyul had been going along with his every whim without the slightest anger after the last time he had burst into tears dramatically.
"Doesn’t it hurt? You’re injured..."
Voice weaker than before, Yoon Seoyul asked him. Remaining unmoved, he replied nonchalantly.
"It’s not as bad as it seems."
"Let’s go to the hospital, Areum. Please."
Taking his time to answer, Cheon Areum hesitantly glanced up at Yoon Seoyul.
"You might need to water me here for a few days... I... I can’t move..."
Gazing at him for a moment, Yoon Seoyul simply nodded.
"I will carry you. Just stay still."
Stifling himself, he let Yoon Seoyul lift his upper body, but there was a limit to how much he couldn’t endure just then. Yoon Seoyul hugging his upper body, Cheon Areum broke down in tears.
"It hurts! It hurts so much!"
Yoon Seoyul instantly froze upon hearing him.
"Hurts? Where does it hurt the most?"
"Everywhere! It hurts everywhere!"
The tears naturally formed in his eyes as he shouted with all his might, not even knowing what to do with himself anymore.
"Does it hurt to move too?... But I can’t leave you here alone, Areum...."
Slightly shaking his head in the crook of Yoon Seoyul’s neck, he shed tears for a while until the trembling body he was resting against felt comfortable enough. Yoon Seoyul, also at a loss as to what to do, could only hold him in his arms on the ground. Once stilled, Cheon Areum didn’t experience the kind of agony that came with his body being moved.
"Why... why do you have to do it? Let others do it. Not everything that happens is your responsibility."
Yoon Seoyul spoke quite gently for complaining. Using his energy, Cheon Areum picked up his arm and wrapped it around Yoon Seoyul’s neck, trying to burrow deeper.
"I also don’t want to lose you. I don’t want to lose anyone or anything. I don’t want to lose. I’m not ever going to lose."
Whether he liked it or not, Cheon Areum was the strongest. That alone made him unable to ignore and pretend that everything around him was fine. Perhaps it was in his nature to get involved. He only wanted to continue living as he had been for the past few years. He didn’t want to lose Cheon Areum or anything by any means.
"Nothing. Nothing whatsoever..."
Mumbling almost incoherently, Cheon Areum rested against Yoon Seoyul’s body, his heartbeat slowly getting low and even.
