Chapter 616 - After my wife broke my heart...
Voren had a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth, a hint of nostalgia softening his usually sharp features. "Well, a black wolf without a she-wolf is a disaster."
He glanced at Seraphine, his eyes warming. "After my wife broke my heart, I never wanted any woman close. With my wolf’s agitation growing by the day, I channeled all that restless energy into the future." He gestured at the magnificent pack around them. "This was the result."
During those times, Bloodfang was out of control and he didn’t know why. It as the reason he came up with the idea of the Blood moon festival, hoping that for some reason, he would be mated to Seraphine.
She was already divorced so the probability as high. He was ready to forgive her for everything, only to realize that she was never at fault.
Had he known, he would have kidnaped her and broken the spell but still, something good came out of it in the end. Thus, Voren’s long wait was never in vain.
The recollection no longer made him sorrowful. Time and love had healed those wounds completely. But before he could continue, that familiar voice rang in his mind, sharp and insistent. ’Don’t be diplomatic about it. Just accept that you are a genius, and stop using me as an excuse.’
There was a brief pause, then Bloodfang’s tone turned almost sheepish. ’I hope you’ll allow Marsha and I to... you know what I mean.’
Voren physically choked on saliva, coughing and sputtering as his face reddened. Seraphine grew disturbed, her hand flying to his back, but before she could ask what was wrong, Marsha’s voice echoed in her mind with triumphant glee.
’I just told Bloodfang to tell his human to give us the chance again. You know what I mean.’
"Hell no!" Seraphine yelled before she could stop herself, her voice sharp and definitive.
Corvine and Liah looked on helplessly, their expressions a mixture of confusion and concern, as Voren forced a strained smile onto his face.
The two wolves, Bloodfang and Marsha, were a handful, and how they always managed to communicate with each other when the mate bond hadn’t even taken effect was still a complete mystery to them. It defied all logic, all known laws of their world.
"Are you alright?" Liah asked Seraphine worriedly, her brow furrowing with concern. But the latter’s cheeks had pinked, embarrassment coloring her features.
There was no way she was going to tell Corvine and Liah that they allowed their wolves to take control of their bodies for sex.
The memory of the havoc Bloodfang and Marsha had caused, the chaos, the wreckage, the utter loss of control, was still too fresh. She sure as hell wasn’t giving them that opportunity again anytime soon.
"Just my wolf being naughty," she said honestly, though she carefully avoided releasing any details. Her cheeks burned brighter as she averted her gaze.
Voren smiled, grateful for the diversion, and continued speaking to redirect everyone’s attention. "We bring the humans in blindfolded so they can’t track their way in and out."
He gestured toward the perimeter. "Also, we raise tall temporary walls and have them work when the pack is sleeping. Before they leave, we put the blindfolds back on until they arrive at their destination." He shrugged, a hint of pride in his posture. "They can remember what they built, but they’ll never know where."
Corvine was mesmerized, his eyes wide with admiration. "Voren, I think you should take control of the leaders’ academy." His voice was earnest, passionate. "Not just me, all leaders need to learn a lot from you. The way you think, the way you build, the way you protect, it’s unparalleled."
The packs had their academies, but that was only for the pups. From the age of ten, leaders were separated from the regular warriors to be given intensive training. It was at the leaders’ academy that Voren had met Seraphine, in the crucible of competition and ambition.
Corvine’s suggestion made Voren’s expression flicker with annoyance. "Corvine, I already have a lot on my hands." He shot a pointed look at Seraphine. "And I haven’t even properly enjoyed my wife yet."
The words carried a hint of longing, his eyes darkening with desire. He was still drooling over his planned vacation, a stretch of uninterrupted time with his wife, away from responsibilities and obligations.
"You’ll have all the time in the world to enjoy your wife." Corvine’s voice was firm, undeterred. "But if you keep all this wisdom, knowledge, and skill to yourself, the academy will keep churning out the likes of Killian, Brad, and Curt." His expression soured at the names. "We need leaders who think like you. We need to change the system."
Seraphine added, her voice thoughtful, "You forgot Alpha Flex and Cage." She counted on her fingers. "And a dozen others who have no business leading anyone."
Seeing that even Seraphine was buying into the idea of Voren taking over the leaders’ academy, he quickly diverted their attention. "During a snowstorm, we can be trapped inside."
He pointed toward a massive structure at the front of the pack. "But in that situation, there is a device inside to open the entrance door." He led them toward it, his steps purposeful.
"Over here, we don’t use gates, but we refer to it as such so everyone would know we are talking about the entrance." He stopped before the Overhead sectional door, a massive construction of reinforced metal and stone.
"Once you enter the code, which I will send to you all later, you open the pack gate. There is another entrance at the top, but I’ll take you through that later."
He paused when he saw his father standing at the entrance, Vladimir’s silhouette framed by the warm glow spilling from inside. The old Alpha’s expression was patient but expectant.
It was clear that everyone was waiting for them.
