Chapter 81 - 81: Loss of Control
Under the scorching sunlight, I kept staring at Bogi who was looking at me. I slowly stood up and began stroking Bogi gently. Right now he looked restless, and I realized that perhaps his time with his owner had already ended.
"What is it?"
After that, Bogi immediately told me to follow him toward the side of the house. I obediently followed him, and every now and then he turned around to make sure I was still behind him. At the side of the house there were several beautiful flowers, but what confused me was that there was one flower that looked familiar to me.
It was the flower used as an antidote when Arvan was injured. Then how could that flower grow here, and why did Mei know about that flower? Did she really know more than I did? Or perhaps Michelle also knew about that flower.
I kept watching Bogi who continued digging at the ground.
I kept staring at Bogi who was still scratching at the soil, and now he was digging even faster than before. I stepped closer and tried to help Bogi search for the thing he wanted, and just as I expected, Bogi had found something. I immediately dug harder after seeing an object beneath the ground, and perhaps it was something Mei had left behind for Michelle.
After Bogi found a box, I immediately stared at it. Bogi kept barking while occasionally looking at me. I hurried back into the house to see Michelle's condition, but what I saw was Michelle cradling Mei's head on her lap while crying softly.
I walked slowly and approached Michelle.
"I found something," I said, and Michelle immediately looked up at me. I directly handed the box to Michelle, and she accepted it with trembling hands.
"Is this from Bogi?" she asked, and I nodded. I handed the box over to Michelle. I only watched her silently.
Michelle opened the box and saw several books that Mei had already translated, and as I suspected, they were indeed translations of that book. Even though it was only written in Latin letters, if we wanted to fully translate it, we would still have to do it ourselves.
"Who is she actually?" I asked with a confused expression after finding out that Mei understood those writings.
"Let's make a proper grave for her," I said softly. At that moment Michelle cried again when she looked at her best friend for the last time, while I remained silent and did not want to comment or ask anything about it. Michelle still cried quietly.
I walked outside again because the sound of crying had not disappeared, and before I realized it, evening had arrived. I only accompanied Bogi and played with him. That dog really resembled George's dog, so sometimes I accidentally called him by George's dog's name.
"You're tired already, buddy…" I said when the dog stuck out its tongue, showing that he was exhausted from playing. I leaned against the shady tree while stroking the dog's head.
"Let's leave this place."
Suddenly Michelle walked out of the house while carrying Mei.
"These are Mei's books, and this is your book. I'm returning it," she said while handing the two books to me, and I immediately accepted them.
"Where are you going to take Mei?" I asked because it looked like she was holding back her emotions. Her tense expression showed that she was enduring something painful.
"I'm going to find a way to bring her back to life!" she said in a hurry.
My eyes widened instantly when she said that. If she wanted to revive someone who was already dead, then it would surely involve demons. I quickly grabbed her hand before she could leave.
"Michelle, you can't do that." "You'll hurt Mei!" I said, but she still shook her head and pulled her hand away.
"You don't understand what I'm feeling, Xanders." "If she dies, then how am I supposed to continue living?" she asked with a fragile voice.
Without thinking, I immediately pulled her into my embrace.
"If you do that, it doesn't mean you love Mei. You're torturing her."
At that moment her tears finally poured out. She cried in sobs while continuing to stare at Mei.
Michelle carefully laid Mei's body on the ground, then she showed me Mei's stomach where there was pus that I could not recognize. Even though the smell was not too strong, I knew it was something connected to demons, and it made me even more confused about everything here.
'Could this really be related to demons? And how did she get that wound? Was Mei also connected to demons? Or was Mei simply a victim of demonic cruelty? And why did Mei understand those ancient letters?'
Those questions made my head ache because I still did not understand why they knew everything while I knew nothing. It even seemed that Michelle and Mei understood it far more deeply than I did. I was not jealous of Michelle or Mei, but I was confused. If they had already been involved with me before this, then why had King Albert never searched for Michelle or Mei? Why was there absolutely nothing that made me realize I already had a destiny like this?
Thirty minutes passed, and finally Michelle tried to bury Mei even though she was reluctant to let her go. But Michelle had no better choice for Mei.
"What exactly is the purpose of you two?" I asked while looking suspiciously at Michelle. She slowly turned toward me and gently wiped away her tears.
"Do you want to see this?" Michelle asked with a firm face, and I immediately stared at her.
She clasped her hands together and closed her eyes. After that her eyes changed, and the hands that had been clasped suddenly opened. She moved her hand, and suddenly a shard of ice almost hit me, making me shocked.
"That… ice…?" I asked in disbelief, and Michelle nodded.
"You and I are already tied together. Before fate played with you, it already played with me first," Michelle said tiredly.
"You really have ice powers?" I asked curiously, and Michelle lifted her head before looking at me.
"Yes, just like what you saw."
"So that's why you wanted to become my partner because you couldn't control your energy?" I fell silent again, and Michelle only nodded in response.
My mouth opened as if I wanted to speak, but Michelle seemed to understand my condition and immediately stood up from her seat.
"I did intend to make you my partner so you could help me, but it seems we are both people who don't know where our paths lead. That's why I'm also confused about how to end this curse, and I also don't know who my real parents are."
I listened carefully to everything Michelle had been thinking all this time. On the other hand, I was also extremely confused by all the events we had gone through. There were already so many problems and dangers we had faced, and even our names had become stakes in a game whose true meaning I still did not understand.
"How long have you known?" I asked, and Michelle nodded.
"I've actually known for a long time, but back then I wasn't too sure. Then because I was curious, I met a wanderer, and they said I would have a friend I could rely on. But somehow it ended up becoming you."
Michelle stared straight ahead while continuing her story.
"Do the people here know everything about you?" I asked again.
Michelle nodded and smiled faintly.
"You know, the people here already know about it. They are also people who were hunted down by every clan. If you pay attention carefully, there are several different clans here living side by side."
"Yes, I realized that. Then what about your younger sister, Lira?" I asked again, and Michelle became silent for a moment before answering.
"Grandmother found her while she was in the forest, and she raised Lira the same way she raised me when I was little."
"Your grandmother has a very kind heart," I said softly while trying to lighten the atmosphere because it seemed Michelle was missing her grandmother. From the side, I could see tears gathering in the corner of her eyes.
"Alright then, now you are officially my partner." "Let's study those books together," Michelle said while inviting me to leave Mei's house.
