Second Chance: A Dark Tale of Urban India

Chapter 201: Taking decision

Rohit couldn’t help feeling amused by Seo-yeon’s reaction.

After their recent interactions, he felt he had begun to understand her a little better.

When she was comfortable and in familiar surroundings, she could be surprisingly bold. She liked teasing people, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and occasionally displayed a mischievous streak that caught him off guard.

But the moment attention shifted toward her, especially in public, that confidence seemed to vanish.

She would immediately become self-conscious, flustered, and eager to hide behind her oversized glasses.

The contrast was strangely entertaining.

One moment she could challenge him without hesitation.

The next, she would panic over something as simple as him walking toward her table.

Truthfully, he had never intended to actually sit with her in front of the entire cafeteria.

Teasing her through messages had already been amusing enough.

Watching her panic from across the room, however, made him reconsider.

Suddenly, sending messages didn’t seem nearly as fun.

Maybe walking over wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all.

A faint smile appeared on his face as he picked up his tray.

Then he paused.

Someone else had already beaten him to the table.

A boy carrying a lunch tray casually dropped into the empty seat opposite Seo-yeon.

Rohit’s eyes narrowed.

The newcomer leaned back comfortably in his chair, speaking while eating, a smug expression plastered across his face.

From this distance, Rohit couldn’t hear the conversation.

But he didn’t need to.

Seo-yeon clearly didn’t like his presence. Even from a distance, Rohit could see the stiffness in her posture.

Yet she wasn’t chasing him away either.

"Guys," Rohit interrupted the ongoing debate about premium features for their dating app. "Do any of you know the guy sitting with Seo-yeon?"

Everyone turned to look. Jignesh was the most vocal. "Seo-yeon? Where?"

Rohit subtly nodded without pointing fingers. "The one right near the entrance."

Arvind narrowed his eyes first. "That’s Avesh. He’s one of Rocky’s lackeys."

Rohit frowned. "And what’s their deal?"

Jignesh leaned in. "Ah! right? You were absent that day. After you beat the crap out of Ujjwal’s gang, they backed off from her. The next day, Rocky, who’s in her class , proposed to her right here in the cafeteria. She rejected him flat. Since then, his lackeys have been harassing her nonstop in his name."

He paused, then grinned at Rohit. "But why are you suddenly so interested in her? Don’t tell me you’ve caught the love sickness too."

Arvind joined in immediately. "Hehe, the muscle head has competition now."

Subhojit scoffed. "Like hell I would care..."

Rohit ignored their teasing and looked at Akhil. "And, what’s your take?"

Akhil looked serious for a moment, then sighed. "Honestly? As much as I want to interfere, I don’t think we should. They’re classmates. If we jump in without context, it’ll just look like we’re starting trouble."

Rohit nodded. "Fair point."

Then, without another word, he picked up his plate and walked straight toward Seo-yeon’s table.

The others blinked.

"...Wait."

"...What?"

"...He’s still going."

As he approached, he clearly heard Avesh still pressuring her. "Listen, girl. Drop the act and accept Rocky’s proposal. I’m saying this in good faith."

Seo-yeon replied in a low, self-conscious voice, "I already told him I’m not interested. Please leave."

"You don’t understand. No one will—" Avesh paused mid-sentence as Rohit pulled out the chair beside Seo-yeon and sat down casually. "Who the fuck are you?"

Rohit ignored him completely and looked at Seo-yeon. "Hope you don’t mind me taking this seat for now."

The entire cafeteria suddenly grew quieter.

Heads turned.

Whispers spread like wildfire.

"Isn’t that Rohit?"

"The guy who fought Ujjwal’s gang?"

"Rowdy Gandhi?"

"I heard half those guys are still recovering."

Seo-yeon’s pale face showed clear worry, but she gave a small, grateful nod.

Avesh’s expression twisted. "So you’re that senior who fucked up Ujjwal’s gang last week. Do you even know what’s going on here?"

Rohit casually reached for Seo-yeon’s water bottle. "Can I have some water?"

Seo-yeon passed it to him without a word. Avesh looked infuriated by the blatant dismissal.

"Hey, I’m talking to you!" he snapped. "You dare ignore Rocky’s men?"

Before Rohit could answer, another tray appeared.

Akhil sat down.

"Bro, mind if I join?"

Rohit nodded.

Soon, Jignesh followed right after, squeezing in. "Make some space, guys. Let the king breathe."

Arvind joined them too, waving cheerfully at Seo-yeon. "Hi! We’re joining too."

Subhojit sat down last, unusually quiet. Despite his brown skin, his ears had turned visibly red.

Avesh looked around in disbelief.

One person had suddenly become five.

The entire cafeteria was now watching the show. His confidence cracked.

He fumed in annoyance. "Hey, what the hell is going on? Is this some kind of joke? Don’t you fear the consequences?"

Rohit shrugged casually. "Why? Is eating at an empty table a problem now?"

Jignesh chimed in immediately. "Or did you book the whole cafeteria for yourself?"

Arvind commented while drinking water, his hands shaking slightly. "Better get the fuck out of here, or you’ll witness Rohit Singhania 2.0."

Avesh laughed, clearly losing his composure. "That’s it. So you guys are clearly meddling in our matters."

His eyes narrowed with open hostility as he pointed a finger at them. "Don’t complain about what happens later."

With that weak threat, he bolted from the table, even leaving his tray behind in his hurry.

Jignesh called after him mockingly, "Oye! At least take your trash!"

But Avesh only quickened his pace and disappeared into the crowd, earning loud laughter from the group.

Once he was gone, Seo-yeon finally released the breath she had been holding.

The tension drained from her shoulders as she looked around the table, her eyes eventually stopping on Rohit.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Rohit leaned back in his chair, casual as ever. "You don’t need to thank us."

Seo-yeon blinked, a little surprised by his calm demeanor.

Rohit met her gaze steadily. "The moment you tolerate people like that, they start believing they have permission."

The smile on her face faded as worry crept back in.

She lowered her eyes, her English still slightly broken by her accent. "You guys don’t understand. They are my classmates. Once recess ends, it will start again."

Akhil frowned. "Then complain to the teacher if it escalates."

She shook her head. "The homeroom teacher is his mother. Any complaint has to be verified by her... and so far, nothing has ever been done."

Jignesh muttered, "Nepotism at its finest."

Arvind added snorting, "Classic second-grade Harsha gang behavior. Must have grown wings after he left."

Rohit replied calmly, "Then pressure them through your father’s channel. He’s a diplomat, right? Use any means necessary to overpower your opponent."

Seo-yeon looked reluctant. "But Rohit..."

Rohit smirked. "Come on, girl. I still remember the day you slapped that guy at the mall. You’re not powerless unless you choose to be.."

Jignesh puffed his chest," Yes, from now on you can rely on us."

Subhojit put both hands on his head. "Wait a minute... you guys already met?"

Arvind grinned fixing his glasses that werent loose. "Why? Got a problem now?"

Subhojit flinched and shook his head quickly. "Nope."

Jignesh leaned forward eagerly. "But seriously, Rohit, tell us the story."

Rohit sighed. "Maybe some other time." He checked his phone. Only five minutes remained until the next period.

Arvind immediately complained without filter, "Hey, there’s that phone again. Genz Bug."

The banter continued and Seo-yeon found herself watching the group.

She felt a deep wave of gratitude — not just toward Rohit, but toward all of them.

Her father had strictly warned her to stay away from boys, but these guys didn’t seem bad.

Chaotic and loud, yes, but playful and surprisingly respectful of boundaries.

Half the time they insulted each other more than they spoke normally.Yet none of it felt malicious.

For the first time since transferring schools, she felt like she was watching a genuine group of friends instead of people merely sharing a classroom.

Her gaze drifted toward Rohit again. She remembered the kiss in the washroom, the quiet care he had shown her during her lowest moments. Since then, every interaction with him had felt strangely comfortable. They had become good friends... even if she had misunderstood his intentions and pushed him away more than once.

Only now did she realize how much of her behavior had stemmed from her own insecurity and jealousy toward Namrata. Every time the other girl casually mentioned Rohit or shared some small story about him, something had burned inside her chest. She had convinced herself he was devaluing her, treating her as cheap or convenient. That was why she had created so much distance.

How wrong she had been.

Her heart beat faster. A faint blush colored her cheeks as she stole another glance at him. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something — anything — but the words died in her throat.

He was still looking at his phone while the others argued loudly about something ridiculous around him.

Earlier, that would have annoyed her to no end.

Now, it didn’t.

Because despite pretending not to care, he had noticed her sitting alone from across the cafeteria. And when it actually mattered, he had come without hesitation.

A small, shy smile tugged at her lips.

Maybe being ignored by him occasionally wasn’t quite as irritating as she had once thought.

She had made up her mind.

This time, she wouldn’t run away from her feelings. Next linguistic class, she would certainly be honest with him.
