Chapter 111: The Decree of the Peaks
Lin Tian woke to the soft glow of spirit stones embedded in the ceiling of the Prime Spirit Convalescence Chamber.
He was alone in the pool, the water still warm and thick with spiritual energy. He sat up, water sluicing off his shoulders, and took a deep breath. His body felt... whole.
The constant, grinding pain of fractured meridians was gone. In its place was a deep, steady hum of power.
He flexed his fingers, watching silver and gold sparks dance across his knuckles before fading. True Spirit Realm, Fifth Level Peak. Foundation purity enhanced. The System’s notification from last night floated in his memory. He felt stronger than he ever had, the Ice Flame Qi circulating through him like a second heartbeat.
The door to the chamber slid open with a whisper of stone. Bai Xueya stepped in, followed by Su Lan. Both were dressed in fresh inner disciple robes, their hair neatly arranged. Xueya’s face was composed, the Ice Fairy mask firmly back in place, but her eyes softened when they met his. Su Lan carried a small lacquered box.
"You’re awake," Xueya said, her voice quiet. "Good. The elders have been waiting."
"How long was I out?" Lin Tian asked, climbing out of the pool. A robe of soft, gray silk was folded on a bench. He pulled it on.
"A full day and night," Su Lan answered, setting the box down. She came over and, without asking, took his wrist. Her fingers pressed against his pulse, her own fire-aligned qi sending a warm, diagnostic thread into his system. "Vessel integrity holding at eighty-seven percent. The fusion is stable. You’re cleared for normal activity, though I’d avoid any major breakthroughs for a week."
"I’ll try to restrain myself," Lin Tian said dryly.
Su Lan’s lips twitched. She released his wrist, but her fingers brushed against the inside of his forearm, where the old Sect Trace had been branded. The skin there was smooth, but when he focused, he could feel a new, more intricate pattern of energy woven just beneath the surface. It didn’t burn with cold suspicion anymore. It felt... neutral. Watchful.
"They’ve upgraded it," Su Lan murmured, her voice low so only he could hear. "A ’Protective Seal.’ The official story is that a talent as rare as yours needs to be safeguarded from external threats."
And the unofficial story is that they want to know exactly where I am and what I’m doing at all times, Lin Tian thought. A nicer cage.
"Elder Shen Ruoyi is outside with a contingent from the Council of Peaks," Xueya said, drawing his attention. "They have a formal decree to deliver. You should be presentable."
Lin Tian finished tying the robe. "Let’s not keep them waiting."
The outer chamber of the convalescence hall was a stark, beautiful space of white marble and blue crystal. Elder Shen stood in the center, flanked by two senior disciples Lin Tian didn’t recognize, both wearing the sky-blue sashes of the Council’s messengers. Behind them, looking like he’d swallowed a lemon, was Elder Boran. His usual imperious demeanor was strained, his eyes avoiding Lin Tian’s.
"Disciple Lin Tian," Elder Shen said, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "You stand before the appointed representatives of the Azure Snow Sword Sect’s Council of Peaks. A judgment has been reached regarding the events of the Contest of Resonance, and your status within the sect."
One of the messengers, a woman with severe features, unrolled a scroll of shimmering ice-parchment. She began to read, her voice ringing with formal authority.
"By the authority of the Council of Peaks, and with the acknowledged consent of the Sect Master in seclusion, the following decrees are issued. First. Disciple Lin Tian, bearer of the rare and stable Dual-Core mutation manifesting as Ice Flame Qi, is hereby recognized as a Sect Treasure. This designation confers the rights and protections afforded to assets of supreme value to the sect’s legacy and future strength."
Lin Tian kept his face blank. Sect Treasure. It sounded grand. It meant he was no longer just a provisional inner disciple, or even a regular one. He was a resource. A prized possession.
The messenger continued. "Second. The prior spiritual bond between Disciple Lin Tian and Disciple Bai Xueya, of the Ice Phoenix lineage, has been examined and validated by the Heart-Testing Mirror."
"The proposed betrothal of Disciple Bai Xueya to Disciple Mu Chen is hereby dissolved and declared null. The prior engagement between the Lin and Bai families, and the spiritual bond between Lin Tian and Bai Xueya, is formally recognized and reaffirmed by the Azure Snow Sword Sect. Any future union will receive the sect’s blessing."
Xueya, standing beside him, let out a breath so soft it was almost inaudible. Her hand, hidden in the sleeve of her robe, brushed against his. A pulse of cold, pure relief traveled through their Link.
"Third," the messenger said, her tone turning sharper. "Regarding the petition for justice filed by the Mu family, alleging malicious meridian poisoning and spiritual sabotage of their scion, Mu Chen..."
Elder Boran shifted his weight, his jaw tight.
"...the Council has reviewed the evidence presented by Senior Disciple Su Lan of the Medical Pavilion, and the testimony of multiple witnesses from the contest arena." The messenger’s eyes flicked to Su Lan, who stood calmly with her hands clasped.
"Disciple Mu Chen employed a Forbidden Siphon technique during the duel, violating sect law. His cultivation damage is a consequence of his own actions and Lin Tian’s lawful defense. The Mu family’s petition is dismissed. Mu Chen is remanded to the Reflection Tower for one year."
Elder Boran’s face went ashen. He looked like he wanted to argue, but a single glance from Elder Shen silenced him. The political wind had shifted, and he was on the wrong side of it.
Face-slapping through evidence and decree,
Lin Tian thought, a cold satisfaction settling in his chest. They hadn’t needed to fight. Su Lan’s testimony and the public nature of Mu Chen’s desperation had done the work for them. The messenger finished reading and rolled the scroll back up. She presented it to Elder Shen, who stepped forward and offered it to Lin Tian.
"These decrees are now law within these peaks, Lin Tian," Elder Shen said, her gaze intense.
"The title of Sect Treasure is not given lightly. It means the full attention and resources of the sect are now bent toward your development. It also means your actions reflect directly upon us. The... monitoring seal on your wrist is part of that protection. Do not mistake it for a leash. It is a shield, and a reminder of your value."
Lin Tian took the scroll. The ice-parchment was cool and heavy in his hands. "I understand, Elder," he said, keeping his voice neutral. "I am grateful for the sect’s recognition."
And I understand exactly what kind of shield it is. One that locks from the outside.
"Your new quarters have been prepared in the Heart of the Peaks, adjacent to the high-grade cultivation caves," Elder Shen continued. "You will have Tier Zero resource access. A dedicated steward will be assigned to you tomorrow. For today, rest. Acclimate."
With a final nod, Elder Shen turned and led the messengers and a stiff-backed Elder Boran from the chamber. The heavy door sealed behind them, leaving Lin Tian alone with Xueya and Su Lan.
The silence stretched for a long moment.
"Tier Zero access," Su Lan whistled softly, breaking the quiet. "That’s the stuff they usually reserve for Core Disciples on the verge of breaking into the Earth Spirit Realm. You’ll be drowning in spirit stones and high-grade elixirs."
"And drowning in watchers," Lin Tian said, looking down at the scroll in his hands. He set it aside on a crystal table. "A steward. ’Dedicated.’ That’s just a polite word for a full-time minder."
Xueya moved to stand before him. She reached out and took his right hand, turning his wrist over. Her cool fingers traced the invisible pattern of the Protective Seal. "It is still a cage," she said, her voice low and fierce.
"But it is a gilded one, with your name engraved on the door. They cannot pretend to look down on you anymore. They have declared your value to the world. That is a weapon, too."
Lin Tian looked from her determined face to Su Lan’s thoughtful one. The System interface flickered at the edge of his vision, a silent, constant partner. He had power now, real power. He had two women bound to him by bonds deeper than any sect decree. He had a cultivation that defied the heavens.
But he also had a brand on his wrist that would report his every significant emotional spike, his every aura fluctuation, to a council of elders who saw him as a treasure to be kept in a vault.
He was out of the outer disciple quarters. He was out of the political crosshairs of the Frozen Sword Faction. He had won.
So why, he wondered, closing his hand around Xueya’s, feeling the twin pulses of her ice and Su Lan’s fire through their Links, does it feel like I just stepped into a much larger, much quieter prison?
