Chapter 542: Time Loop
"-Reversal."
The word left Lysander’s mouth like a whisper and everything changed.
WHOOSH
The world bent, reality folding in on itself like paper crumpling in an invisible fist.
Damian’s awareness scattered, his senses fragmenting across moments that shouldn’t exist simultaneously.
Then everything snapped back into focus with jarring clarity.
SPLAT
A body exploded in front of him, red mist painting white snow.
"This one?"
Kinsley’s voice rang across the field, pleasant and terrible.
SPLAT
Another death, another voice cut short mid-plea.
’What–’
Damian’s thoughts stuttered, his mind struggling to process what his eyes were showing him.
’I was just... Marshal was... we were...’
His hands came up to his face, feeling skin that should have been covered in Brian’s blood but wasn’t.
’This... already happened.’
SPLAT
The sound made him flinch, recognition crashing through like ice water.
’I watched this before. I saw them die. I–’
His breathing came faster, panic building in his chest.
’Am I going mad? Did I imagine everything after? Was it all just some kind of hallucination brought on by–’
"Damian."
The voice cut through his spiraling thoughts, resonating directly inside his skull.
’M-Marshal?’
"Listen carefully. We don’t have much time."
Lysander’s voice came through with urgency that made Damian’s scattered thoughts focus.
"I used my Time Reversal skill to bring us back to this moment. Both of us are here, both of us remember what happened. You’re not going insane."
Relief flooded through Damian for one heartbeat before Lysander continued.
"The skill is dangerous and unpredictable. I barely understand the principles governing it myself..."
A pause, heavy with implication.
"The future you just lived through, the war that ignited, the deaths that will follow, all of it can still be prevented."
SPLAT
Another explosion of red mist, another voice silenced.
Damian’s hands clenched on his thighs, his eyes tracking the execution continuing in front of him.
"But only if you make a different choice this time."
Lysander’s voice became harder, carrying absolute conviction.
"You cannot react. You cannot activate Blood Sovereign no matter what happens."
’But–’
"I will bring you back as many times as necessary."
The presence in Damian’s mind shifted, becoming heavier.
"But understand that each reversal has a price. Each use strips away my understanding of the principles until the Law Seed itself fades away."
SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT
Three more deaths in rapid succession, the count climbing higher.
"So, if you keep making the same choice, eventually even time itself will run out for us."
The weight of that settled in Damian’s chest like stone.
"This is the only path forward that doesn’t end in everyone’s death."
Damian’s breathing came shallow, his eyes tracking across the kneeling Mafia members still waiting for their turn.
"The only way to save yourself."
Then Kinsley’s hand rose, selecting another victim.
And the process continued, relentless and terrible, building toward the moment where Brian would ask his question.
Damian watched it all unfold again, his mind screaming at him to act, to do something, to stop it somehow.
But Lysander’s voice kept echoing in his thoughts.
"Don’t react. You cannot react. You must not–"
Then Brian knelt before him, broken and bleeding, his eyes finding Damian’s face with desperate hope.
"You... s-save me?"
The question hit like a physical blow.
Damian’s mouth opened without permission, the word forming automatically.
"Yes."
CRACK
The seal shattered.

[Second Attempt]
WHOOSH
Reality bent again, Damian’s awareness scattering and reforming.
SPLAT
The first body exploded, Marcus Feng dying while trying to explain.
"Again."
Lysander’s voice resonated in Damian’s mind, carrying frustration mixed with determination.
"Don’t think about saving him. Don’t let the protective instinct take over. You must stay in control."
The executions continued, one after another, each death playing out exactly as before.
Damian’s hands trembled on his thighs, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ached.
’I can do this. I can control it. I just need to–’
Brian knelt before him, his broken voice asking the question.
"You... s-save me?"
Damian’s throat closed, his chest constricting.
"Don’t answer. Don’t say anything. Just–"
"Yes."
The word escaped before he could stop it, instinct overriding intention.

[Seventh Attempt]
WHOOSH
SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT
"Again."
Damian’s breathing came ragged now, his mind fragmenting under the repetition.
’How many times–’
"Don’t think about the count. Focus on the moment. You can do this."
But when Brian’s question came, when those desperate eyes found his face...
"Yes."

[Fifteenth Attempt]
WHOOSH
The world reformed around Damian, the scene playing out with terrible familiarity.
Tears streamed down his face now, mixing with blood that leaked from his eyes.
SPLAT
Each death hit harder than the last, the cumulative weight of watching them die over and over crushing down on his chest.
SPLAT SPLAT
His hands shook violently, his entire body trembling.
"Stay strong. You’re getting closer. I can feel it."
But Lysander’s voice carried less certainty now, edges of doubt bleeding through.
Brian knelt, his question emerging broken and desperate.
"You... s-save me?"
Damian’s mouth opened, a scream building in his throat.
’NO! I WON’T AGREE! I WON’T–’
"Yes."
The word tore from him like a curse.

[Twenty-Third Attempt]
WHOOSH
SPLAT
Damian’s scream cut across the field this time, raw and animal, his control shattering completely.
"STOP! PLEASE JUST STOP! I CAN’T WATCH THIS ANYMORE!"
But Kinsley’s pleasant voice continued, selecting another victim.
"You have to endure it. There’s no other way."
SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT
Bodies kept exploding, the count climbing, the words becoming familiar through repetition.
"Boss, tell my daughter–"
SPLAT
"I’m sorry I wasn’t–"
SPLAT
Damian’s hands clawed at his face, his nails drawing blood.
’Make it stop make it stop make it STOP–’
Brian knelt before him.
"You... s-save me?"
"YES!"
The word came out as a howl, desperation and rage mixing together.

[Thirty-Seventh Attempt]
WHOOSH
Damian said nothing this time, his voice having given out several attempts ago.
SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT
The executions played out in silence broken only by dying screams and Kinsley’s pleasant commentary.
Damian’s body had gone rigid, his eyes staring forward without blinking, blood running from his nose and ears.
"Damian, I know this is hard, but you need to keep trying. You need to–"
Brian knelt.
"You... s-save me?"
Damian’s mouth moved, the word emerging as barely a whisper.
"Yes."

[Before the Fiftieth Attempt]
Lysander knelt in front of Damian, his hands cupping the boy’s face.
Damian looked up at him with eyes that had gone completely hollow, emptied of everything except endless suffering.
His lips moved, words forcing themselves through a throat raw from screaming.
"Marshal... I... I can’t do it."
The admission came broken and defeated.
"Please stop. Just let it happen. Let me activate it and get this over with. I can’t... I can’t keep..."
His voice cracked completely, fresh tears streaming down his face.
Lysander’s thumbs brushed across Damian’s cheeks, his own expression showing pain that went bone deep.
"If you give up, then nothing will change."
His voice came out soft despite the weight underneath.
"If you give up now, you’ll never know if you really can’t do it. You won’t know the ending if you quit midway through the journey."
His grip tightened slightly, anchoring Damian’s unfocused gaze.
"You must understand! It might happen in this attempt. It might happen in the next one, or the one after that."
He paused, making sure Damian was listening.
"The only guarantee is that it will never happen if you give up! You have no idea how far away success is, how close you might be to finally breaking through..."
His hands shifted, his forehead pressing against Damian’s.
"But just keep going! One more attempt! Just one more! You... you’re a completely different person now from the one who endured it the first time."
His voice dropped to barely above a whisper.
"You’re stronger than you were at the beginning, even if you can’t feel it through the pain."
Damian’s body shook, sobs wracking his frame.
"You... you don’t understand... it... it hurts so much–"
"I am the only one who understands!"
Lysander’s interruption came absolute and certain.
"I... I know exactly how it feels to watch the person you care about die in front of you over and over and over again without ever being able to change the outcome!"
His hands trembled against Damian’s face, his own voice cracking.
"That’s why I never wanted you to experience this! But there is no other choice!"
His grip became almost painful, desperation bleeding through.
"If you want to live, if you want everyone you care about to live, then you must suffer! You must endure until we get it right!"
Before Damian could respond–
WHOOSH
The transparent energy wrapped around both their souls, binding them together in shared suffering.
Two warriors locked in a battle against inevitability itself, fighting to change a single moment that kept slipping through their fingers like water.
One bearing the weight of watching his friend die over and over, his mind fragmenting under repetition that had no mercy.
The other carrying the guilt of forcing that suffering, of dragging them both back through hell because the alternative meant watching everyone burn.
