Chapter 176: Another War Zone (8)
The Green Zone was definitely far from Red Zone 67. At a normal pace, they might need five days to get there, considering the various obstructions on land.
With their speed, it might only take a day or less if they let Liz put on full speed. However, Ayen might not be able to take it even if the two espers shield him from the impact.
Just as they were rushing, the next confrontation in the green zone between the clan and government forces started. The casualties among civilians also increased.
Most of them were panic-related cases like stampedes and such, and not from the espers. However, there were indeed innocent civilians who were caught in the crossfire.
The government forces, especially ordinary soldiers, still evacuated citizens, but they could not penetrate deep into the city where the clan forces established themselves.
The skirmishes happened mostly at the city gate and had yet to escalate into an all-out war.
As of now, both had other concerns, and before an order arrived, they might continue this. Although the government needed to reclaim the zone to establish its lost prestige.
"Any orders from the higher-ups?" The current in charge of the government forces and espers asked. He was a man in his late twenties named Jarred, a well-known A-class esper.
Behind him was a woman in her early twenties, with long blonde hair. She was an A-class esper, Georgina. She shook her head, crossing her legs.
"Nothing," she paused; an interest flickered in her eyes. "But I heard they finally managed to get ahold of the Commander General." Georgina had yet to meet the Commander General in person, but she truly admired him.
Jarred sighed in relief because of the news and then glanced at her.
"Don’t dream. The Commander General’s a loyal man to his guide." He was also among the people who interacted the most with Arstem and met the legendary guide who tamed the Commander General.
Georgina chuckled. "What are you thinking? I’m not interested in him romantically if that’s what you think." Her lips widened slightly, and the red lips parted slightly to reveal her white teeth. "I’m not interested in men in general and definitely not espers."
Her type was the complete opposite of her, delicate and soft, whom she could spoil.
Her demeanor changed slightly. Jarred was reminded yet again why Georgina was part of this operation. She was, to say the least, a battle maniac. A rising star among the espers.
It made sense that she admired the Commander General, who earned his title and fame through countless battles.
Jarred could only nod. "Well, hope that’s clear. The Commander will certainly visit us here... Make sure to behave."
He was referring to Georgina’s need to avoid making a scene. Knowing her, she might challenge the Commander General to a fight as soon as they met. One thing he also experienced.
Georgina did not answer but merely smiled, her eyes sparkling. Jarred held his forehead. This troublemaker, really. He already warned her and did his best.
If she got beaten up, that was her choice. After all, the Commander General might have softened according to the rumors, but they knew that it only applied to his guide.
Jarred gave up dissuading her and looked at the city gate not far from him. They were camping outside the city, but the periphery was almost under their control.
It was already good for the first day, as they were dealing with clans headed by an elite clan, Nevaris. Nevaris might not be the most powerful one, but they are surely in the top three.
His eyes watched the confrontation at the gate. They were more into checking each other than fighting. Jarred knitted his brows. He looked up and returned his eyes to the battlefield.
"It was quiet." Jarred could not help but mutter. While the area was stable because it was an established Green Zone, he could not help but have some premonitions.
It was definitely ominous, but for some reason, it was not targeted at him or them.
Goergina also stood up and stood beside him. She tilted her head; her long hair cascaded over her shoulders smoothly.
"What do you mean?" It was not quiet at all. She could even hear the impact of the fight from the city gates.
Jarred could also not explain it. However, his intuition was right, or almost right, most of the time.
"I don’t know. I felt an ominous premonition quickly approaching this place."
Goergina stared at him. She had not been with him for long, but she also heard of the rumors about his terrifying intuition.
"Is it a trap?" Georgina guessed. If it was a trap for them, they had to take action.
Jarred frowned heavily. "It’s also strange. I don’t feel nervous. It’s likely not directed at us." If he were anxious, they had to hurry the fuck out immediately.
He lived for so long and trusted his intuition the most.
"Not at us? Then who?" Georgina looked at the city. "Are they planning to do some shit in the city again?"
She did not need to mention them directly for the other to understand.
Jarred could not answer for certain. After all, it was not a vision but merely a foreboding feeling.
"I don’t know," Jarred responded. He sighed and had a headache again. Seriously, he was not exactly the brains in the team, and so he hoped the Commander General arrived quickly.
Georgina fell silent and stared at the city. She crossed her arms and tapped her right arm while doing so. Unlike Jarred, who was cautious in nature, she was more reckless in her approach.
She was a strength-type esper, making her a close-combat monster. Even an S-class esper, if they were not careful, might be defeated, especially the magic-type ones.
What was more, she was versatile and flexible. A true fighter.
"Should I infiltrate and check a few things?" Georgina smiled, her expression already determined.
Jarred internally cursed. He was in charge, but... If this woman had already decided to do things, he might not overpower her with this position alone.
No, Jarred could not possibly defeat her.
Also, this plan... might work.
