Chapter 1075 - 1073: The Trail Has Gone Cold
Lin Chuan looked at the owner and said with a smile, "Just make us a couple of dishes."
The owner responded and turned to go into the kitchen.
Less than two minutes later, the owner came out again and poured two glasses of water for them.
After saying thank you, Lin Chuan asked the owner, "Boss, could you tell me how far Xiong Family Village is from here?"
The owner laughed and said, "Not far, less than five miles. What, are you looking for someone in Xiong Family Village or...?"
Lin Chuan said, "Looking for someone. Boss, do you know someone named Xiong Yaoceng?"
As soon as the owner heard this name, his brow furrowed immediately, "Who doesn't know him in Xiguan Town, he's a notorious scoundrel."
"Looks like he doesn't have a good reputation?" Luo Guoqing remarked.
The owner glanced towards the door and said, "Exactly, he's just a despicable person. He deserved to die."
Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing were shocked and said in unison, "What did you say, he's dead?"
"Yeah," the owner nodded, "He was found dead not far from town. The police came by yesterday asking if we'd seen him."
Unexpectedly, Heipi was killed, and Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing felt quite depressed as they hastily finished their meal, bid farewell to the owner, and headed to the police station in Xiguan Town.
At the police station, Luo Guoqing revealed his role with the City Committee and inquired about Heipi's death.
The officers told them that the case is being investigated by the West River County Criminal Police who had inspected the scene, and the body had been taken back to West River County Police.
Heipi's hometown is not far from here; Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing originally wanted to visit his home, but from the restaurant owner, they learned there are hardly any people at Heipi's place, and they probably wouldn't find any useful leads there.
The two discussed and decided to go directly to West River County Police.
To facilitate their work, Lin Chuan called Director Hu at the municipal bureau to notify West River County Police.
They arrived at West River County that evening, around seven o'clock, and went straight to meet Captain Liu Zhijiang of the county's criminal investigation team.
Liu Zhijiang had already received the notification from above and informed them that Heipi was killed in a deserted mountain area two miles from Xiguan Town, stabbed three times and died from blood loss.
With Heipi dead, all leads were cut off. He was murdered in the wilderness with no witnesses, so finding the killer would certainly take time.
Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing left West River County Police feeling very downhearted.
The murder of Heipi suggested that there was definitely someone behind Xiao Xue's death. Although Lin Chuan vaguely felt that Yang Zi might be involved, he didn't want to implicate her without evidence, considering his past close relationship with Yang Zi.
Although West River County is not large, it is quite bustling. Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing booked two rooms at the West River Hotel and decided to stay overnight in the county.
After nine in the evening, Lin Chuan called Luo Guoqing to go out for a while. They left the hotel and went along the street to a plaza.
Coincidentally, on the east side of the plaza, Tong Huaiyu's brother-in-law Yao Shunzi was sitting with some people at a barbecue stand, and Lin Chuan with Luo Guoqing happened to walk past.
After Tong Huaiyu was removed and investigated, Yao Shunzi's position as the village security section chief was also immediately revoked. Over the years, he'd made enough and had long settled his home in the county.
Yao Shunzi inadvertently spotted Luo Guoqing, and with his somewhat dim wits, combined with some alcohol, he grabbed an empty beer bottle and stood up.
In his view, if it wasn't for Luo Guoqing and Xiao Xue, his brother-in-law wouldn't have been removed, and he wouldn't have lost his position either.
The people drinking with Yao Shunzi weren't good characters; seeing him stand up with a bottle, they asked, "Hei, what's up?"
Yao Shunzi was known by the nickname Er Heizi, and those familiar with him usually called him Hei.
"That bastard made me lose my job," Yao Shunzi pointed at Luo Guoqing with an intense gaze full of resentment.
"Damn, let's get him, for Hei's sake," the individuals drinking with Yao Shunzi grabbed beer bottles and rushed towards Luo Guoqing.
Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing were walking side by side, and suddenly sensing something unusual behind them, they turned to see several people aggressively coming at Luo Guoqing with bottles raised. Lin Chuan shouted urgently, "Old Luo, watch out."
The guy leading the charge was already upon Luo Guoqing, swinging a bottle towards his head without a word.
Lin Chuan pulled Luo Guoqing behind him, and with a swift kick, knocked the guy directly to the ground.
There were many barbecue stands here, and seeing a fight, the surrounding crowd began to scream.
Luo Guoqing hadn't yet grasped the situation, but upon turning back saw Yao Shunzi and cursed loudly, "Damn it, daring to attack me."
He then lunged at Yao Shunzi.
These few people were no match for Lin Chuan; within moments, Lin Chuan had them all knocked to the ground. Luo Guoqing and Yao Shunzi were still tangled together, exchanging blows fervently.
Despite being slightly drunk and dim-witted, when Yao Shunzi saw Lin Chuan quickly take down his crew, he panicked and turned to flee.
Before he could run, Luo Guoqing punched him hard on the back.
Yao Shunzi tripped, directly falling face-first onto the ground.
Luo Guoqing rushed up and stomped on Yao Shunzi, cursing, "Damn it, you dared to ambush me." With that, he lifted his foot and kicked Yao Shunzi twice.
Luo Guoqing's kicks were quite forceful, causing Yao Shunzi to scream out miserably like a slaughtered pig.
Wailing...
The sound of police sirens came from afar. A bystander had already called the police when the scuffle began.
Lin Chuan didn't think of fleeing; they weren't in the wrong.
Within two minutes, the police car arrived, and two young officers, one male and one female, stepped out.
"Lin Chuan." The female officer called out in surprise upon seeing Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan was taken aback, staring at the young female officer, as he didn't recognize her. He asked, "Who are you?"
The female officer smiled and replied, "I'm Gu Qianqian, a good friend of Song Xiaojia. She often mentions you to me."
Lin Chuan uttered an "Oh," and immediately the image of Song Xiaojia flashed in his mind. It's been a long time since he last saw her.
"What's going on?" Gu Qianqian asked Lin Chuan, looking at the people lying on the ground.
Lin Chuan smiled slightly, shrugged, and said, "We don't know what's going on. We were just walking when these guys came over to attack us."
Gu Qianqian frowned a little and walked over to the people lying on the ground. After checking them, she saw they weren't seriously hurt; Lin Chuan had been quite judicious.
At this point, the other young officer gathered Yao Shunzi and his group into the police car and said to Lin Chuan and Luo Guoqing, "Get in the car. If there are any issues, we'll discuss them at the station."
Gu Qianqian said nothing and waited for Lin Chuan to get into the police car. Once he did, she took out her phone and called Song Xiaojia.
West River County Square Road Police Station.
Lin Chuan sat on a long bench, with Gu Qianqian sitting across from him.
Yao Shunzi and his group were detained in the holding cell, while Luo Guoqing was in another room.
"Lin Chuan, what are you doing in West River County?" Gu Qianqian asked, looking at Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan smiled and replied, "Nothing much, just here to have fun."
"Who are you trying to fool?" Gu Qianqian said, as if she knew Lin Chuan well, "I've heard a lot about your heroic deeds from Xiaojia. Someone as busy as you wouldn't come to West River County just to play around."
Lin Chuan was surprised and just about to speak when the door opened and that young officer came in. He glanced at Lin Chuan and then whispered a few words in Gu Qianqian's ear.
After listening, Gu Qianqian looked at Lin Chuan with a slightly surprised expression.
After the young officer left, Gu Qianqian said, "Lin Chuan, Captain Liu from our detective team called. You're in the clear."
"Does that mean I can leave?" Lin Chuan asked with a smile.
Gu Qianqian pursed her lips and said, "No, you can't leave yet. Xiaojia is on her way over."
Dazed, this Gu Qianqian really had a quick mouth, leaving Lin Chuan speechless.
It turned out that Luo Guoqing had called Liu Zhijiang in another room, explaining the situation. Upon hearing that these two had connections with Director Hu from the City Bureau, Liu Zhijiang hurriedly called the station asking them to release the people immediately.
Song Xiaojia was on her way, and Lin Chuan had to wait for her, so he first had Luo Guoqing return to the hotel.
Yao Shunzi attacked Luo Guoqing, and Luo Guoqing knew very well it was all because of his brother-in-law Tong Huaiyu's issue. He intended to tell Lin Chuan, but held back, deciding to discuss it further at the hotel.
Song Xiaojia would take some time to arrive, so Lin Chuan told Gu Qianqian he wanted to see Yao Shunzi.
Gu Qianqian also wanted to figure out why Yao Shunzi attacked Lin Chuan and the others, so she agreed to Lin Chuan's request.
In the interrogation room, Yao Shunzi sat dejectedly on the chair, with Lin Chuan and Gu Qianqian seated across from him.
"Yao Shunzi, lift your head." Gu Qianqian said sternly, her voice imposing.
Yao Shunzi lifted his head, looking at Lin Chuan and Gu Qianqian.
Lin Chuan stared coldly at Yao Shunzi and asked, "Why did you attack us for no reason?"
Yao Shunzi, indeed a bit slow, replied, "The guy with you caused my brother-in-law to be dismissed and made me lose my job. Of course, I want to settle the score with him."
"Who is your brother-in-law?" Gu Qianqian asked curiously.
Yao Shunzi replied proudly, "My brother-in-law is the mayor of XX Township, Tong Huaiyu. You've heard of him, right."
